With the ultra-difficulty of Vech's SUPER HOSTILE in mind, Zap presents a maps series...
INTRODUCTION
Hi! Zap here. I've started up a map series (as you can see above). It's a CTM - that is, Complete The Monument. This genre was started by Vechs, creator of SUPER HOSTILE. You had to get 16 blocks of coloured wool, plus some metal, to literally complete the monument. With the Elemental Survival series, I hope to do the same, all with Vech's main ethic: difficulty. The goal of these maps is to put pressure on the player. Maybe the only piece of coal in sight is hovering over a giant pool of lava. Perhaps the monument is surrounded by creeper spawners. It's going to be insanely difficult.
I am planning out a full series, and I have no idea when it could possibly end. Like other CTM maps, Elemental Survival maps have two main goals:
1) Survive
2) Complete the "monument" - that is, the Shrine of Glory.
As for rules, there are usually seven main rules used: to put it short, survive, get wool from chests, don't leave the map. That's almost it. Sometimes there'll be special rules for special areas though, like when I create SMP-compatible spawn areas. Check back every week or so for map updates.

A distorted warp of twisting, floating pillars and burning meteors, all suspended over ... nothing. This is less of a mob challenge, more of a terrain challenge. This map has been released into the Public Domain.
This is a link to Vech's toolkit to making CTM maps, if you want to make your own. This kit is all his work, not mine. I found it very helpful, and hopefully other map-makers will too!
Remember to put [CTM] at the first part of a complete-the-monument thread, so other forum people can quickly find these maps.

RECOMMENDED MODS/TEXTURE PACKS
You don't explicitly need any modifications of any sort to play my maps. However I do suggest some particularly good ones.
UPDATE, 30/10/11: I have moved on forward to 1.9_pre4, therefore the two mods will no longer work with my maps. Furthermore, potions and enchanting have essentially taken the place of Simple Alchemy and I cannot endorse a mod if there is a vanilla equivalent. Sorry about that.
Faithful 32x32 Texture Pack - A texture pack that's basically default Minecraft, but HD. During day-to-day use I actually use a version that I slightly modded, but I use the default Faithful for my screenshots.

I've been busy working on #00 today. I've either been busy or playing custom maps before.
For those of you who want to see the Training map so far, there's a pic in the spoiler.
As you can see, I've been having a little problem with fences catching fire from nearby lava or fire. So not all areas are fall-protected.

Because I've realized my inexperience is going to lead to maps released later than I'd like, I've pushed back the dates for #01 and #02.I'm also uploading an early version of Elemental Survival - Training. I've just done some planning work on #02, and I just realized how seriously HUGE I've made it. To give you an early idea with minimal spoilers, it looks like I'll need SEVEN FREAKING INTERSECTIONS.
If you've got advice, make sure to post so I can improve my maps. Stupid of me really, making my first maps so big.
September '11 Info dump!Update Time: Info dump! Regarding The End and Suburbia Hell: After realizing the amount of effort needed to build so many individual buildings (and the fact that the spawn house alone took me a week), I have decided to do #02 first. Quite strange, I know, doing #02, then #01, then #03. But I want to get a full CTM map out there quickly - hopefully in time with the official Minecraft release. Sorry to those of you who were looking forward to Suburbia Hell.
I'm currently updating #00 for 1.8 - my exact changelist goes:
- Remove normal MC terrain in the distance - Adapt to 1.8 - new mob spawners, food mechanics, etc. - Improve the layout
Or something like that. Anyway, I'm working on all that for #00 Training v0.6. No new platforms yet - that will probably be dealt with after The End is complete. To elaborate on my working points, I'm changing the fences to iron bars (no more burning fences), deleting the land in the distance, adding in endermen, cave spider and silverfish spawners on the Mobs platform, and reorganizing some signs.
#00 v0.6 should be out by the end of this week...
Oh yes. I'm not going to post release dates anymore, solely because if I don't release the map in time people will hate on me. Hope that clears some things up. Training v0.6Update Time: Training v0.6
ES - Training v0.6 has been released! This is the ideal version for Let Play's, as I have tidied up the signs a bit.
This new version is for 1.8 and beyond only - previous versions running this new version will have all the fencing disappear, plus a few other blocks.

Sadly, the Steve spawners are broken wiith 1.8. Ah well, this terrain is challenging enough.
And besides, it's practically impossible at night...
EDIT: Also, the Sapling's Home has been changed into the Crystalborough Forest. I thought just giving you a tree and wheat farm was far too easy. Not anymore.
Oh, and how do you make giving out travel-related stuff "hard" or "hostile"? I don't want to make an entire zone just a small island with chests with boats, minecarts, etc. 1.9

So I decided to bump up to 1.9_pre4 and continue from there, even though I'm without SPC and SpawnerGUI. I won't involve the The End dimension just yet, because if the only way out is to die, well that's quite stupid.

I've got a great idea for a project. I open up OneNote and it takes me about twenty minutes to write out all the planning and a full README. I go to open Minecraft... ...and my stupid mouse battery dies. I'm too lazy to go and get new batteries, so right now I'm sitting here, raging on the forums while trying to use MCEdit with only a mousepad (not going well). Hopefully the old rechargeable batteries will be ready soon so I can actually do something.

A quick update for you guys.
I'll be leaving town tomorrow and won't be back until Thursday (US time). Hopefully by the time I get back my last two testers have been able to submit advice, but if they don't I'll probably release ES #01 on Sunday/Monday anyway.
I'm also considering a huge rewrite of my systems now that I'm getting to grips with what I like doing
What I'm thinking is:
ES #01 - release next week
ES #02 - The End (Hard, Linear-Branching)
ES #03 - Bitterdepths (Normal, Linear-Branching)
ES #04 - Unbreakable (ROMHack, Open World)
I would work on #02, #03 and #04 simultaneously, depending on when I get ideas for areas/traps/etc. However, I know some people were quite looking forward to Suburbia Hell, but I've come to realize I don't enjoy creating thousands of buildings as much. What do you guys think?

#00 - Training - will be out NO LATER than the end of this month. maybe earlier, if I work hard.
Not sure when Vechs will release super hostile #08, or #10. You know what? I'll make it my goal to have Training ready to be herped before #08 or #10 SH is ready to derped.

finished, has most of the basics, the walkways seem a little lcastrophic at times. i would HIGHLY suggest not using that monument, being the victory monument with a name change, for the "Victory Monument" is copyrighted. it has the basics, and i think the next update should be more on tactics to survive.

Only the name "Victory Monument" is trademarked. I built the Shrine of Glory and the Shrine of Mastery from memory.
Yes, the initial stages of the tutorial are a disaster, because I rushed ahead and began building without thinking about layout. As it goes on, the main walkways should become cleaner. One day I'll go back and fix the first two platforms, too.
When I release v0.8, I'll probably have finished about three or four more platforms.

I've just done some planning work on #02, and I just realized how seriously HUGE I've made it. To give you an early idea with minimal spoilers, it looks like I'll need SEVEN FREAKING INTERSECTIONS.

Regarding The End and Suburbia Hell:
After realizing the amount of effort needed to build so many individual buildings (and the fact that the spawn house alone took me a week), I have decided to do #02 first. Quite strange, I know, doing #02, then #01, then #03. But I want to get a full CTM map out there quickly - hopefully in time with the official Minecraft release. Sorry to those of you who were looking forward to Suburbia Hell.
I'm currently updating #00 for 1.8 - my exact changelist goes:
- Remove normal MC terrain in the distance
- Adapt to 1.8 - new mob spawners, food mechanics, etc.
- Improve the layout
Or something like that. Anyway, I'm working on all that for #00 Training v0.6. No new platforms yet - that will probably be dealt with after The End is complete. To elaborate on my working points, I'm changing the fences to iron bars (no more burning fences), deleting the land in the distance, adding in endermen, cave spider and silverfish spawners on the Mobs platform, and reorganizing some signs.
#00 v0.6 should be out by the end of this week...
Oh yes. I'm not going to post release dates anymore, solely because if I don't release the map in time people will hate on me.

ES - Training v0.6 has been released! This is the ideal version for Let Play's, as I have tidied up the signs a bit.
This new version is for 1.8 and beyond only - previous versions running this new version will have all the fencing disappear, plus a few other blocks.

Land of Signs is coming along mighty fine.
Sadly, the Steve spawners are broken wiith 1.8. Ah well, this terrain is challenging enough.
And besides, it's practically impossible at night...
EDIT: Also, the Sapling's Home has been changed into the Crystalborough Forest. I thought just giving you a tree and wheat farm was far too easy. Not anymore.
Oh, and how do you make giving out travel-related stuff "hard" or "hostile"? I don't want to make an entire zone just a small island with chests with boats, minecarts, etc.

So I decided to bump up to 1.9_pre4 and continue from there, even though I'm without SPC and SpawnerGUI. I won't involve the The End dimension just yet, because if the only way out is to die, well that's quite stupid.

I've got a great idea for a project. I open up OneNote and it takes me about twenty minutes to write out all the planning and a full README. I go to open Minecraft...
...and my stupid mouse battery dies.
I'm too lazy to go and get new batteries, so right now I'm sitting here, raging on the forums while trying to use MCEdit with only a mousepad (not going well). Hopefully the old rechargeable batteries will be ready soon so I can actually do something.

A quick update for you guys.
I'll be leaving town tomorrow and won't be back until Thursday (US time). Hopefully by the time I get back my last two testers have been able to submit advice, but if they don't I'll probably release ES #01 on Sunday/Monday anyway.
I'm also considering a huge rewrite of my systems now that I'm getting to grips with what I like doing
What I'm thinking is:
ES #01 - release next week
ES #02 - The End (Hard, Linear-Branching)
ES #03 - Bitterdepths (Normal, Linear-Branching)
ES #04 - Unbreakable (ROMHack, Open World)
I would work on #02, #03 and #04 simultaneously, depending on when I get ideas for areas/traps/etc. However, I know some people were quite looking forward to Suburbia Hell, but I've come to realize I don't enjoy creating thousands of buildings as much. What do you guys think?

I have to say this ... how do you "realize" your own map?
I would survive 28 days in a creeper apocalypse. GENERATION 24: The first time you see this, copy it into your sig on any forum and add 1 to the generation. Social experiment. I've been busy working on #00 today. I've either been busy or playing custom maps before.
For those of you who want to see the Training map so far, there's a pic in the spoiler.
As you can see, I've been having a little problem with fences catching fire from nearby lava or fire. So not all areas are fall-protected.
#00 - Training - will be out NO LATER than the end of this month. maybe earlier, if I work hard.
Not sure when Vechs will release super hostile #08, or #10. You know what? I'll make it my goal to have Training ready to be herped before #08 or #10 SH is ready to derped.
Because I've realized my inexperience is going to lead to maps released later than I'd like, I've pushed back the dates for #01 and #02.
I'm also uploading an early version of Elemental Survival - Training. Check it out while I keep working, and please be aware it's a WIP. Something may be crappy.
finished, has most of the basics, the walkways seem a little lcastrophic at times. i would HIGHLY suggest not using that monument, being the victory monument with a name change, for the "Victory Monument" is copyrighted. it has the basics, and i think the next update should be more on tactics to survive.

Only the name "Victory Monument" is trademarked. I built the Shrine of Glory and the Shrine of Mastery from memory.
Yes, the initial stages of the tutorial are a disaster, because I rushed ahead and began building without thinking about layout. As it goes on, the main walkways should become cleaner. One day I'll go back and fix the first two platforms, too.
When I release v0.8, I'll probably have finished about three or four more platforms.

As you all know, the signature banner isn't really working. You can either use a link or a picture - both combined doesn't work.
If there's anyone out there with working sig-banners, please read so I can fix it.
