Better Together Update
Today at E3 Mojang have announced the upcoming Better Together Update, this update unifies Minecraft in one version available on most platforms (excluding Java Minecraft which will continue to be supported as an independent version), known simply as "Minecraft" the new update will include some game-changing new features!
- Cross-platform play, play together with friends in Minecraft no matter what platform they're using.
- In-game servers, available on all platforms Minecraft will have in-game servers you can join right from the menu. The servers available at launch include some of the most recognisable Minecraft servers: Lifeboat, Mineplex, InPVP, and Cubecraft.
- Marketplace is available for Minecraft.
- 4K HDR graphics which include "improved lighting, shadows, water effects... basically, it'll be like giving your eyes a luxury massage. This’ll be available to folks playing on Xbox One, Windows 10, iOS, mobile, and VR - essentially every platform that gets our Better Together update."
- Pocket edition players will receive a free update as Pocket Edition will become Minecraft, and owners of Minecraft: Xbox One Edition and Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition will receive the brand new Minecraft game for free.
This E3 we shared our plans to introduce the Better Together Update to unify console, mobile and Windows 10 versions of the game under a single edition. And that’s not all! This swish new version brings in-game multiplayer servers, an update to give your worlds a lick of graphical paint, and cross-platform support - letting console, Win 10 and mobile Minecrafters play together for the first time!
And PC Java edition players, don't worry, Mojang will continue to support the original version of the game:
So going forward, the edition you'll find on Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, mobile and VR will simply be known as 'Minecraft', a separate entity from 'Minecraft: Java Edition', which is the original PC game (that we'll continue to support, of course).

Why is the original Minecraft not called "Minecraft"? Why does it get the extra thing added to it? Doesn't make much sense to me.
Honestly it's dumb, Windows 10 edition of minecraft is a much lower quality and the "java edition" is the best of all of them. Really it should be like Minecraft : Expanded for the other ones and leave Java as minecraft
They're almost certainly planning to drop support for it in a year or two. Remember Minecraft Classic?
Minecraft Classic was moved to the launcher. Support wasn't dropped, it was added to the version chain. Dropping support for Minecraft: Java Edition would be a noticeable chunk of profit down the drain.
It was never actually supported once newer updates for the game came out, it was just there for the people that wanted to build without worrying about limited resources. I believe it dropped off once Creative Mode was re-added to the game.
Even then, it is currently available in the launcher under historical versions.
My guess? Because the other ("C++") versions (in combination at least) make more money than the Java edition. Java edition was kind of reaching its sales cap before the other editions were really released.. I mean I'm sure it still sells OK but since most people only need one account, and the accounts don't expire.. there's simply fewer and fewer people left to buy it as time goes on.
Plus there's the store (which I think they said won't be coming to Java version? Might be wrong but given how moddable Java is, its probably not worth their time.) So that's another revenue stream that the Java version doesn't provide. Realms I'm pretty sure works for all versions, so that's not really a Java-specific bonus.
And at the end of the day.. the main reason the Java edition is the most popular is because its the most feature-rich. That gap will continue closing as the alternate systems (especially mobile) get more powerful and are able to support larger worlds and more block updates per tick and so on. Right now new features tend to be added to Java and then at some future time (often 6+ months later) get ported into the others. Eventually I suspect those roles will reverse -- main development will be done on (probably) the C++ version and then backported to Java later and if/when that happens, we're probably going to see a bit of a sea change toward the C++ version. It won't be complete (Linux/Mac users would be screwed of course, plus the people who like to play modded.. though I'd be unsurprised if we see a Mac release of the C++ version before this happens) but it will start since there's plenty of people who are more interested in playing with the latest and greatest features than there are people who are stuck on Linux. And if they get around to adding full mod support to the C++ version, that's another large chunk of the current Java-centric players that could potentially move over.
of course theyll drop java edition, no money in it for them once people buy the game and they can just force all new players to buy the windows 10 version. 3 or 4 more windows versions and youll be lucky if your computer can even recognize the java version
Microsoft is taking over slowly and the next thing you know people can't even differentiate between the java version and the console versions. Heck, the java version is updated with constantly boring stuffs.
It should also share the name too, but it's probably so the kiddos don't get confused.
And the other versions' updates have been that exciting? It's just been playing catch up with the PC edition.
Is playstation in this if not im relly mad
The only reason I even play minecraft anymore is because of the mods. I doubt Minecraft: console edition (which is what they should call it) is going to be moddable. Even if it is, it will probably cost money.
"The servers available at launch include some of the most recognisable Minecraft servers: Lifeboat, Mineplex, InPVP, and Cubecraft."
RIP all other servers. These mega servers already destroyed the community-driven server scene, this is the final blow.
Honestly, I miss small servers. I've seen so many die, including my own.
they will like slow updates on the java edition, then let minecraft catch up add cross all platforms together.
PlayStation 3/4/Vita and Xbox 360 arn't geting fricking mods why??? Aparently the tags are #ForTheChildren but they are #ForThePlayers
They we're blaming Safety reasons of minecraft, but.... we have online public game to play minigames with strangers so whats up with sony?
Actually the updates don't take that long to come to the other versions, you can use the world of color update for reference. It came out on java on June 7, while the Xbox One version had this content in the CU43 and CU44 (May 30 and June 27 respectively).
At the moment its boring stuff, but with the people they are bringing on, I am sure really cool stuff is going to be coming out. Heck, I would not mind seeing stuff from Minecraft story mode added in, like pipes, more ways to make banners. I would not mind seeing them make a way for us to make certain blocks since those blocks are only able to be used through commands.
That doesn't answer it actually. Minecraft Java was the original release, and all the other platforms, which are now compatible, used to have the different titles attached. With this crossplay update, it would make sense to rename those to the Crossplay version right? But instead, they renamed the original Minecraft.
And that’s not all! This swish new version brings in-game multiplayer servers, an update to give your worlds a lick of graphical paint, and cross-platform support - letting console, Win 10 and mobile Minecrafters play together for the first time!
Does this include PC versions too?
Only the fan-favorite windows 10 edition
