GOLEMS! We need golems that use different elements from the game! Like dirt golems near the surface, rock and steel more underground, and fire near lava! So the deeper you go, the stronger the element!
There could even be super mob versions. Think "Shadow of the Colossus". Massive creature/terrain things with one specific weakness on it somewhere. You will probably have to climb up on it to find the weak point. Killing it turns it entirely into terrain, which you can mine at your leisure.

I honestly really want this, if only because long boats full of skeletons with bows and viking helmets sailing on the lava would be really awesome.
