I had this problem up until the 10.6.7 update, and so far (since yesterday evening) I have had no problems. I highly recommend anyone with 10.6.x to update to 10.6.7, and anyone with < 10.6, to buy it (its like $30) and upgrade.
awesome - i had this thought some time ago, but it eventually slipped my mind. I hope when it's finished, the admin makes the world/ directory available for download!
Posting replies here as well as on the MC ME website seems to be a safe bet soooo here goes:

Why you want to be whitelisted: I am looking for a new server with a lot of like-minded people wanting to build something big and cohesive (and I think this project takes the cake!)
Any notable achievements in Minecraft: I have a lot of experience both admining and mining/building in MC, and I would like to help however I can! I built my own mini version of the mines of Moria (though not as detailed) on one of our maps.
What would you bring to the server: Someone who loves to build, loves LotR lore, and has a good eye for architecture and detail.
I'm pretty disappointed though not totally surprised by it: the code to handle and sync damage (as well as other things) in SMP is very likely quite different from how it works in single-player (though ideally it should be abstracted so damage is agnostic to where the environment is served, but whatev).
Why I was hopeful for it is that I think SMP really makes the game. Sure, single-player is fun, but if you build a huge castle all fortified with traps and moats and giant mines... you're basically the King of Nothing. You can't (practically) share all you've built with friends, the most you can do is share your World folder, or upload pics/videos, which for most things (64bit ALUs and scale-model Enterprises aside) just isn't the same as sharing it at the same time with others.
