Could I by chance have this save to do the interior? I haven't decided but I plan on either doing my take on a period-appropriate design or doing a "modern ovehaul" I guess you could call it. Both would be interesting and fun to do I think.

My biggest suggestion for you if you are going to build a building around this, which is what I assume to be a very grand entrance, is to be consistent with the rest of your building. Since this portion is completed, you're going to have to base color scheme, numbers, pattern, all off this part. So for windows for example, you're going to want to continue the 3, 1, 3, pattern you have going there. Everything must relate to one another is some way. Again, for exapmle, if you did a regular triangular cobblestone roof it would make no sense, where as a white, dome-like roof would, because it would relate to how you did the entrance's roof. That's my input, and I guess one more thing would be to have a plan, doesn't have to be finite, but a rough plan of what you are doing, a high rise, a single family home, ect. and a general idea of where types of rooms will be located in relation to one another. Something people seem to focus on here is exterior facade. Having a functional, nice interior is just as important as having a pretty exterior. Put as much thought, if not more so into how your rooms work with one another.

^^^^ Not sure how you'd add depth, the ability to perceive 3 dimensions, to a building. Perhaps he means adding contrast, since you used the same material for the majority of the building. A simple way to add realistic, architecturally pleasing contrast is to make vertical elements stone, and horizontal elements something else, in your case, wood. This makes the building seem strong, and creates a very pleasing contrast. If you're interested, a good example of this is Falling Water, a very famous home in Western Pennsylvania.

The stone works better but is not necessarily the best choice. The color wood does not contrast well with that color stone and if you're thinking logically, why would the material interacting with water be able to rot when when you could use stone. I would experiment with other materials to find a realistic, nicely contrasting room.

posted a message on Four Modern Villas
I had a little time before and after finals and I was feeling a little creative, so I came up with a few schemes and built them on minecraft. Here they are!

The first home I'll showcase is a modernist hillside villa, very much inspired by work by Le Corbusier.

    Entrance

Main living space, "living room" located on entrance floor, with kitchen, dining area and bedrooms below

Outdoor living space, kitchen and dining area can be seen in background

hallway with adjacent bedrooms, I dug down to this level on the right, bringing in natural light to what would otherwise be a "basement level".

View of kitchen and dining area, another "lightwell" as I've been calling them, to the left, I dug down to this level to bring in natural light.

I'm not very proud of this one, but I'll put it up regardless, it got way too large for my liking and ended up looking kind of tacky (Like one of those over sized gaudy mansions you see)

    View of approach

Elevation of home looking at the hallway connecting both parts of the whole

View of private part of home in foreground, the larger more public part in the background

Private part of home, unified with central 2 story space

Next is the first home I did on this map, I was pleased with it but grew into something a little too much for my liking.

Entrance at the top of hill, I used the comrpess/expansion technique to affect feeling of space as you enter (tight entrance moves into open green roof)

Two "light wells" can be seen here, both bring natural light down into all lower levels of the home, making it feel not so much like a home in the side of a mountain.

Second (or rather lower level) kitchen and living area

    view from living level

    view from master bedroom balcony

    view of lower level balcony

Lower level living space, use of "lightwells" can be seen

The final home is by far my favorite, it is more of a minimalist home, it's basic concept is an L shape home with smaller part of the L being private space and the longer part being more public/living space, an inaccessible courtyard connects both parts of the house. both public and private ends of the home sport outdoor living spaces.

Courtyard has a tree growing in it, hence the lack of roof

All circulation is organized on the outermost side of the L shape, the following pictures are in order moving from Living space, to kitchen, to Courtyard, the vertical Circulation (stairs lol), to bedroom space.

view has turned, facing private section of home

Here are a few arbitrary shots
a better view of the courtyard

a better view of the kitchen

approach, garage is located below the bedroom

    Thanks for taking a look!

Well, I downloaded your world save that was provided and I hate to say it, but I'm a little disappointed. I was excited to see what spectacular spaces you designed inside these beautiful skyscrapers, but many interiors were looked over completely. It seems you were focused solely on facade, which I guess was your intention for this project, and it's still wonderful, but I would have loved to see what spaces a practicing architects could come up with. On a side note I'd love to know what you did to produce those renders.

I would definitely consider adding columns and buttresses to the build, it looks great but it's so obvious that nothing is really holding up the roof. It really draws away from the fact that it is an otherwise fantastic build.

    Quote from Syphus

This is a really stunning build, I love it!
The outside looks really streamlined and modern and I love the use of elevation between the road and the concourse. The interior is detailed and well planned out, it's just brilliant! When you're done it'd be great if you could upload a save, I'd love to look around it :)

I never really figured out how to upload world saves but I will try! Would you want me to wait until I have more built or would you like a world save of just the station and plaza? Thanks btw for the positive feedback!

posted a message on Central Train Station and Square (city soon to come)
Some of you may remember I made a modern city post around this time last summer, and while I enjoyed building it and I had some decent ideas I knew it could be a lot better so after a year of school I'm back with some more. This city I will be building over the rest of the summer is a city concept I've been working with for a while. I've made street level sort of a sub/basement level and what would be the second story the main level, meaning that the streets are hidden beneath the main level, reclaiming the streets to pedestrians, allowing for more open public spaces and green space.

Anyways, the pictures I have to show today are of the central train station and a main square with a shopping complex below on "street level". The city will rise up around this central area including subterranean apartment complexes, high rises, a few super talls and I'm going to try and experiment with some urban farm designs. So let's begin.

Here is day and night plan view of the station and square, I used lights to indicate circulation, which primarily comes from the street corners, I also used the stark contrast between the rigid geometry of the square and the organic shape of the train station.

    Here are some exterior shots:

A view into the shopping mall, the "street level" mall has openings with trees coming out providing some shade to the plaza above

Another view into the mall from the "street level" sidewalk

An elevation of the station from the south

An elevation from the east (or at least from where the sun rises, I know it's different for whatever reason)

Now here are the interior shots

A little rain on the sky lights

View of all three levels of the Train station, platforms, food court level, and main level

    Views from the platform below

That's all for now, new additions should come in the next week or two. Tell me what you guys think!

They way you split the wall up using vertical lines while still making it look flowing gives it a structured, man-made feel, good job.

I'm a first year architecture student, any tips on designing buildings I could create in minecraft? I plan on using my major and when I get some free time to start a new city project, I liked my last one but it was not well planned.

I think the arch or support or whatever you call it in the middle should be the same color wood as the rest of the house. I would maybe also suggest using stone stairs for roofing it looks like slate or shingle instead of just wood. Other than that I can't think of anything else I would change
