posted a message on Best of Minecraft 2009: Nominations
coolpilot, as a correction I believe by 'the city map,' AVM was nominating the map created on his server AVM server not a server called city map (could be wrong but that's how I read it) especially as that map would be my nomination for best map (btw, it has another 'city' hidden just underneath the sewers which was created while alex was 'away', check for cloth mixed in with stone in the sewers).

also suppose I'd just like to suggest category of best/most effective OP/Admin since OPs who do their job are half of what makes a server great.

nah, humor is undrestood we've simply learned never to underestimate how practical something completely absurd/unorthodox can be. to be honest if you can break rocks with your bare fists in seconds could you punch an unarmored person in the chest 10-15 times without killing them? exactly. and that is why this is what one would call a running joke rather than 'serious-moding' a joke. (lol, almost forgot I was trying to say we saw the humor and were just going with it hehe)

dunno, was originally in favor of a switch to E but to be honest I've come to see that the intuitive feel of a right click fits the game a lot better.

dunno if thats something I'd agree with; I've only found them deep near lava once wheras I've found them within 15 blocks of the surface at least 4 times. Since its easier to find shallower things I'm not saying that they're more likely there but I don't know if there really is any tendency for a proximity to lava

posted a message on Miners vs griefers!
Sad truth. Truly at some point it is necessary to acknowledge that victory against griefers may be nothing more than learning to deal with their inevitability (essentially getting good at undoing the damage with backups and OPs and even a reconstruct squad). Since there is no real rational reason for people to grief and yet they do there is no defense against such individuals which can be reached through rational thought processes (since the action itself makes no sense we can't even determine who would perpetrate said action).

....Oh and I agree with the assessment of lurk more and post less (its better when people can't be sure if you are dead or not, fewer bullets to dodge).

Hehe, a cool idea. It would be like a legacy of those of us who supported the game before it was done and combatted griefing to protect the game...Could have the map with the last target always the same: a statue to honor OP's fallen while protecting their server. Would be rather epic then.

So yeah I'm for this idea :smile.gif:

Eh the loss was nothing more than a proof of the futility of my attempt not something which upset me too greatly. Having the server get griefed while I was down there though most certainly was something that upset me though which is why I bothered posting.

As for the map editor: yeah he told me to wait for the bug to be fixed but I just figured it would be good busy-work and save time if I could manage to finish before the next map-editor-update (I'm a poor figure-er apparently).

But yeah the tours thing I'm still in favor of. In between sponge strips I was following people I'd let in around the server watching them but since the person teleporting into them is noticible I suppose they simply stopped griefing and walked to a 'clean' part at that point (thus my call for a person who stays with them until they prove trusting or a set kinda route for them in which no damage can be done....ok had the best 'trap' idea ever I have to try out at some point....

So yeah thats my whole idea and why. What was Alex's response btw??

Griefings getting worse. Think we need limited 'tours' where visitors have escort until they request to be builders and are trusted after contributing since that will discourage griefing their own building. Also...I give up on unflooding the underground, lost about 32k of blocks unflooded with reset so I finally accept that as hopeless.

Used to be Puregamer til that incident with the rogue OP banning. Still pop in there whenever I'm bored or feel like messing around but AVM is now where I spend most of my mine-time.

the problem being that sometimes the server admin is unavailable in which case nothing can be done. Some kind of protection that doesn't depend on a single individual's presence really would be nice.

At the bare minimum it would be useful if an OP's name changed color or displayed when they used an admin feature so rogue OP's could be caught and so that people would be able to identify if an op user was acutally policing or simply preoccupied digging and thus not a dependable protection force against griefers.

An ability for the server admin to leave a standing message though would probably be best as it could include the names of the OPs he assigned and trusts thus notifying you of who to go to for help as well as preventing operators from having to be suspicious of people on their side.
