I agree with the OP. He isn't hating on them, but he feels the same way I do. I recently loaded up the seed 9000.1 and saw some pretty cool mountains. I wanted to start fresh but I realized several people are going to use this area....

Minecraft would struggle on the Xbox 360, PS3, and especially the Wii. Besides, Java isn't exactly supported on any of the consoles. All of the consoles have 512mb of RAM. The Xbox and PS3 both have okay-ish processors, and they both have okay-ish GPU's. Meaning? Sure it is theoretically possible to run Minecraft on the console.
My brother and I just finished fixing up an old gaming rig. P4 3.2ghz HT, 2gb of ram, GeForce 8500GT 512mb Vram. everything tested out perfectly in memtest and others. Used to run ubuntu and we slapped Winxp on it today.
So! completely fresh install.
Now, we've put all the drivers on, and gotten everything to work just fine. However, minecraft will BSOD it almost instantly.
Has anyone else had this happen? Is this a java problem?
Thanks you!
Don't use XP. It is the year 2011. Try downloading a copy of Windows 7, install a fresh copy of Java, update your video card driver @ nvidia.com, and then try it.
just a note- this is my VERY first forum post, so im kinda new to forums....
anywho, everytime i try to load minecraft heres what happens, in order:
- my comp starts lagging really bad.
- just before it gets to the main game menu, the window goes black
- program becomes unresponsive and only closes if i shut it down from the task manager.. even still it takes about 5 minutes for my comp to get back up to normal speed.
heres some of my system info, idk if this is sufficient for anyone to diagnose the problem..
also, I am unaware of the system requirements for minecraft, but here:
system:
microsoft windows xp professional
version 2002,
service pack 3
computer:
AMD atholon (tm) XP 2400+
2.00 GHz, 1.GB of (free) RAM
40 GB hard drive.
What is your video card? Go to device manager, and go to display adapter. If it is an Intel display adapter, NO.
Also, try installing Ubuntu. It runs Minecraft a lot better, especially for older computers like yours. However, you can go build your own awesome gaming computer for $200-400 so I would invest soon.
i dont know what to tell you
i made a large underground room (at least 20x20) that was relatively close to the surface (10 blocks down)
i then grew grass in there by using a stair step from the surface
all was going well the room was all grassy and lit up
Mobs Spawned in large amounts for a bit then later no mobs would spawn in there at all
why would this happen?
Its pretty finicky. Well I just got a lot of mobs to spawn so this thread is null and void.
i have gotten mobs to spawn in a 4x4 space, maybe they are spawning on the surface?
Yes. There is always a massive sheep, chicken, pig, and cow orgy during the day right next to my stairway on the surface and a creeper, skeleton, spider, zombie one during the night, along with a few evil chickens plotting their next attack on me.
- Implanted grass blocks on MCEdit, I'm on Ubuntu so no native INVEdit.
- I have gone over 100 blocks away and came back to check
- I have waited several game days at least 24 blocks away.
The only reason I can think of is the lack of a sun. However, peaceful mobs require a minimum light level, something which my light level is MUCH higher.
I'm 100% sure wood half steps will be added. However, I think Gold, and Diamond half steps would look awesome. I want to build a giant golden Mayan temple with gold steps leading to the throne.
Also, cobblestone half steps look a lot like iron or smoothstone. Why? I'm not saying it should be changed, but why?
On Windows 7, it can use up to 1.1-1.2 gb of RAM. On Ubuntu, it uses at least 2GB of RAM on the same machine which is my laptop. On Ubuntu, my franerate is around 700-800FPS (Far/Fancy) and on Windows it is around 200-500. I think unused RAM is wasted RAM.
If your windows system crashes every 5 minutes, there is something wrong with it. Plain and simple.
And don't even SAY the word viruses (relating to how mac's don't get them), because that is total bs. Mac users just couldn't find a virus if it grew an arm and stabbed them in the face.
And going into the whole 'mods are impossible to install on mac' (for the record, I couldn't get texture packs to work either) kind of invalidates the whole easy to use argument, don't you think?
I don't own a mac. I would never ever buy one. My roommate has one (and he plays minecraft)
Texture packs, put the minecraft app into the texture packs folder, and run it, or do it how you would on a PC, put the .zip into the texture packs folder in the appdata directory, most of what you said was unfounded, the virus point, they exit, they are nasty, but there aren't many of them, why would there be, people dont design viruses to attack the minority, good day to you sir
That's a pretty common misconception that OSX (and Linux) do not get viruses because they are a minority. They are UNIX based so their running environment is all user-permission based so it's pretty difficult to infect yourself with an in-the-wild-virus. Although it has been done.

But why though?
The (old) laptop has enough RAM I suppose, just that is very slow RAM and probably an awful GPU.

The light level is well above the minimum requirements and the spawn size is enough apparently.
