My firewall doesn't let Minecraft through. Whenever I try to connect to a friend's server, it doesn't work. Any ideas on how to fix it?

Feb 23, 2014Hello all,Posted in: Java Edition Support
My firewall appears to be blocking incoming and outcoming connections for Minecraft. Because of this, I cannot play on LAN with my brother. I tested to see if it was the firewall, and switched it off. It then began to work again. His computer does have a firewall and does let Minecraft through, curiously. He can get on his friends' servers.
I don't want to switch my firewall off, so is there another way to let Minecraft bypass the firewall?

It used to work until tonight, when I just kept trying and trying over and over to get on.
I says someone's online (1/8) and the wireless bars next to it are all green.
But every time I try to get online, I get the ionettyhandlertimeoutreadtimeoutexception error.
Is there a solution other than restarting the server?

You are on a LAN? Everyone has the same IP Addressing scheme? In otherwords on the same subnet? Do you have a firewall setup on the computer being used as the server you were specifically hosting (not your brothers)? That would be why you couldn't see the server through Minecraft, a firewall being in place blocking port 2556.
My Mac's firewall is off, but my bro's firewall is currently on.
Any idea on how to handle this? Specifically, how to make the firewall let Minecraft pass through?
Yeah, the problem is something about the firewall. I disabled the firewall on his PC momentarily, and I could connect. Any idea on how to let the LAN server get through the firewall both ways?
Dec 7, 2013Okay, so my brother and I would frequently go on his server to play co-op together. I'm connecting to his server on a Macbook Air, and he uses a Windows computer to host it. Both of us have updated to 1.7.2, and we're playing on LAN.Posted in: Server Support and Administration
However, ever since a week or so ago, we haven't been able to. Every time he opens it and I try to connect, it just says "connecting" and then displays some error message (something along the lines of "io.netty connection time out"). So I tried to see if his computer would connect to a server I host. And not only would it not connect, the server in general wouldn't show up on the server list.
In summary, I can't connect to his server because something about his Minecraft's connection is weird.
Anyone have advice?
