i am trying to get minecraft running on my dad's computer. got him his own account and everything and when i try to open the exe version of minecraft it just has a black screen. i updated his java and tried again, nothing.
he has an amd athalon 64 3400+ processor 2.5 gigs of ram. ati radeon x1600
edit: apprently i can click the links in the launcher it just doesn't show up on the screen.
edit again: now it's no longer blank but just garbled colors. i can still click the links from the launcher but i can't log in.
also whenever i play in browser it runs out of memory almost immediately.
edit: i can now get the launcher to work "properly" by resizing the window until the launcer actually loads like normal. then i log in and am able to play. however i had to set all settings to their lowest possible to keep the game from crashing due to running out of memory. i would think 2 and a half gigs would be enough to run the game but i have to set render distance to lowest and that is almost un-enjoyable. any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
i would love to play on your server. as you say most vanilla servers are either not fully vanilla or die after one patch where they fail to update to the next version. also a lot of vanilla servers fail to have mods on the server with any regularity, usually due to a small population in general.
i have this same problem, i double click the minecraft.exe and it does nothing. i have tried deleting the .minecraft folder and redownloading the .exe, still nothing. if anyone has any solution to this plz halp.
edi: i believe i have fixed it by downgrading my java to 1.6.0_30 32-bit. don't know where to find the 64-bit version of that particular version of java sadly.
i have just started getting this weird crash tonight after playing for a long time. i will try the new java 7 and report back.
edit: the newest java didn't help at all. after much trial and error i installed an older version of java 1.6.0_30 32-bit and it seems to have fixed my problems, sadly i couldn't find a 64 bit version.

by unique i meant that they would only spawn in the shroom biome, and i was sort of going off the whole mooshroom thing. perhaps the mushrooms have affected other creatures as well and started growing on them, possibly giving them new abilities or appearances.
has anyone suggested that the mushroom biome have it's own unique enemies that spawn in place of/in addition to the regular enemies? i think something like a shroom zombie or creeper would be really cool. have the zombie be covered in spore spouting mushrooms that give it the ability to occasionally poison you on hit, and perhaps the creepers can occasionally poison you when they explode. or possibly both enemies have a cloud of spores around them letting them have an AOE effect when near you.
now about stairs. i just think you should be able to make stairs out of more things, such as smooth stone and sand stone, even brick and stone brick.
these are just some suggestions that i came up with while showing the game to my brother recently and while playing there after.
this sounds right up my alley, i really hate servers with super huge spawn towns with all sorts of huge pixel structures all over the place. i just want to play the game with people online.

oh ok i couldn't remember if they were in the game or not, but regular stone stairs would be nice as well.
