It occurs to me that since the mobs aren't completely dead by the time they reach the bottom, would it be possible to also use this to farm xp? A compact, cheap xp farm is a rather attractive notion given the direction Enchanting took...

It most certainly can be. I usually stand at the collection point punching the mobs feet in order to get my drops quicker. You would have to make sure you get your timing right in order to deal the final blow to the mob, the right weapon would also help too. One hit with a diamond sword as soon as the mob falls through the lava will kill it.

Other than that it is perfectly safe to strike the mobs without them shooting/exploding, so long as you stand at the right spot on the collection point.

Spiders need a 3*3 space to spawn and a transparent block above them. If the ceiling of each floor isn't higher than two blocks they can neither spawn on the floor (since there aren't any 3*3 areas) nor on the single blocks because there's no transparent block above. If the rooms are higher than two blocks then you should use transparent blocks as spider blockers since mobs can't spawn on them.
The picture only shows one layer of the outer walls, but they must be as high as the spawn floor of course.

Ok I get it now. I didn't realise that they needed a 3x3 area, I thought it would of been 2x2. That's good to know for future designs, thanks!

You can also use an open trap door as a spacer. I successfully tested it with a skeleton and two creepers.

Just tried your idea and it works perfectly, really saves alot of time on positioning the player. Great idea. I'm going to screenshot it and add that in.
In reply to your previous post, I'm unsure how that platform won't spawn spiders, could you please explain?

Also I checked out your mob trap in your sig, very impressive. You surely are the expert in this field.

Install a piston connected to a clock to push the items out of the shaft.

That is an excelent idea. I never thought of that. Thank you :Diamond:

As for spiders not working in freefall traps, I can never get a 100% kill rate with them, so thats why I wrote that. If others can, well my bad.

Chillahs 3rd point: Like i said earlier my spawning floor was only quickly made to show where the spawning floor goes. How you make your water channels is up to you.

I dont see anything new in this trap.

    1. the spiders will block the hole so fast u cant even look.
    2. enderman will destroy it if you make it 3 high
    3. 1x8 water is now enough better is 2,3x8

    Good points.
    1. This trap isn't set up for spiders anyway. As spiders will just climb straight out the hole. So you will need a method to screen out spiders first. I just use this on skelly spawners so I don't need to worry.
    2. You don't have to make the spawning room 3 high, the spawning platform in the picture was just made for illustration. I play 1.7 still so I don't take enderman into account.
    3. Sorry I don't understand what you said. Rephrase?

    Thanks everybody for your comments

    Gday everyone.

Today I present to you a mob trap that I created and use on most my maps. Of a quick search on the forums and wiki I can't find anything similar, but please if this already exists, understand that I'm not trying to steal your work.

Ok so there are 4 main mob traps that people like to build, each have their pros and cons and each suit certain situations.
    THE LAVA BLADE.
Pros: Fast kill rate, Moderately compact.
Cons: Some drops destroyed, Can't be too close to spawner/spawning room (light level).
    DROWNING TRAP.
Pros: No Drops destroyed, Very compact.
    Cons: Slowest kill rate.
    PISTON SMASHER.
    Pros: No Drops destroyed.
    Cons: Slow kill rate, Complex.
    FREEFALL TRAP
    Pros: Fast kill rate, Simple.
Cons: Often impractical due to size. Wont work with spawners. (Collection point out of range), Doesn't work with spiders

So here is my trap, All the benifits of the other traps without the cons.
Pros: Fast kill rate (slightly slower than lava blade).
    No drops destroyed
    Moderately compact
    Works with spawners
Cons: Fixed collection point (solved with pistons)

All glass used in these pictures is just for easy viewing of the cross section

Like all traps, this one has a spawning area with water currents to push mobs to a central collection point, which is a 1x1 hole for this trap. The spawning area can be made in whichever way is suited to you.

Ok so once the mobs fall down into the hole they will fall exactly 8 blocks to where they will then meet the lava blade. The diamond blocks represent the shaft. The length of the shaft is very important, take notice of the distance between the water collection point to the lava blade, and replicate this exactly.

This is a close up of the lava blade. The mobs will fall through the lava, catching on fire and then drop below. If the shaft represented in the previous picture is too short, the mobs will hit the lava and then swim, thus dying and destroying drops. Also note the lava source block. It needs to be 3 blocks away from the shaft, like pictured. Note the sign holding the lava from falling.

The green block represents where the mob will end up. It will have passed through the lava and now it will be burning to death at this position. The space above the green wool needs to be at least 4 blocks high, so the mobs dont jump back up into the lava and swim up. However if nessecary, this space can be extended, this will also make the mob deal fall damage and thus die quicker
The red wool is where the player needs to stand to collect the drops. No water currents can be used to move drops to the player, as water will extinguish the burning mob. The x,y position is very important. Too close and the player will risk getting knocked back or even hurt by the mobs, too far and the player won't be close enough to pick up all the drops.

With the Red wool replaced with a working bench for easy viewing. Note the perfect place to stand using the crosshair. Dead middle will occasionally make you get knocked back by mobs, that won't hurt you but it will just mean you won't pick up all the drops. So a touch further away from the green block is recomended. Use the F3 co-ords to help you.

    EDIT:

A trapdoor can be placed as shown, by leaning the player hard up against this trapdoor it provides perfect positioning for collecting drops in safety. Thanks to Malacodor

The design of this trap was made while playing Vech's super hostile series. After securing 4 skellie spawners bunched together i saw the potential for a mass production arrow factory. I tried every trap. This was the trap that gave me the maximum drops/hr.

    So that's it, enjoy.

EDIT: To make collection easier a piston can be used to push the drops out of the tube. This can save the effort of having to allign up the player in the correct position in order to get drops. The piston could also push the drops into a water channel thus delivering the loot to a more convienient location.
Keep in mind that pistons themselves cant push drops, you will need to push the drops with a block that is being pushed with a sticky piston. Connect this piston up to a button to control the collection or connect it up to a restone clock for automatic collection.
Thanks to Malacodor for this idea

EDIT: This trap can be modified to work with spiders, if the whole drop shaft is expanded to 2x2. Additional lava blades will need to be added as other mobs could slip through unhurt.
The clever use of pistons will need to be used in this design in order to retrieve all the drops. See the picture of modified Shaft

Why join? It would be good to join a server with no rules and no protected zones. Protected zones and lockable chests takes all the fun/risk out of the game.
