posted a message on [1.5.2 Java] Oldguard Vanilla Community Server

I feel that with such an early version it will weed out low-effort hackers

Basically unless someone's gonna be interested in your server there won't be any random kids joining and cheating. The traffic on these old versions is really this low. The old rule still holds true: latest version servers attract players no matter what. Actually the hardest part for the kid cheaters will be to get 1.5 to launch because they come from newest versions. Unfortunately for you old cheat clients are, too, easy to get with a quick google search.[/p]
And don't use CraftBukkit, go for Spigot. Spigot is basically CB but with more tweaks for performance.[/p]

Why bother with Nether Quartz? Don't you get enough experience from mining coal?

    Ruby ore

Does it have the original unused texture? :D

I think I figured your motivation. Basically the ores are kinda a neat side-quest in the caves for you. You don't use them for anything really, but as a number the stats are cool to look at. It's this little motivational boost too to find something that's rewarding by the gameplay concept (ores)

The cheats sure do exist for these versions and aren't hard to get. I know some Java devs also port current version cheats for 1.4-1.5, apparently it's not that hard.

I'm hosting a 1.5.2 vanilla-gameplay server without rules and if there's not quite enough interest generated to rent a server for you - you're welcome to create a diaspora once you escape spawn.

There's no advice I can give running the server, everything pretty much works if you don't mind the awesome server-side optimizations the community developers have brought to the server software in latest versions (but honestly, CraftBukkit (not Spigot!) runs fine with 30-40 people until they start... misbehaving). The only client-side issues is the lack of skins and the client crashing if you go from newer versions to 1.5.2 and older (either need a separate folder for 1.5 in the vanilla launcher or use MultiMC) but I'm sure a tight-knit community like yours won't depend on much fresh blood coming from the server lists etc. so basically not an issue.

I don't know how I happened to stumble upon ur post but it's incredible. I'd have never thought this game can be played in this way! Your story and your depth (pun?) of knowledge was motivation enough to read the thread from start to end. Do you really only do it for the exploration and randomness aspect of the caves or is the hoarding of minerals also a goal for you?

All the fascination aside I personally had a practical aspect to read your posts about the generator: I didn't know the caves changed with release 1.7. Honestly, I never thought about them. I'm on the lookout for ideas and I will keep in mind the 'cave aspect' of the game for people like you.

I got one question: due to the height distribution of cave gen and diamonds, don't you almost exclusively find iron, coal and gold? And increasing world height alone won't change this (though I now remember you mentioned changing ore gen rules somewhere). Personally I've never explored caves much except in early game to gather the essential amount of coal and iron that's what the 'usual' caves are best for.
