Really, though, this is kind of what we have bows for. TNT isn't meant to be used offensively, anyway.
You can either strip mine by picking a certain area (like 10 by 10 or whatever you like) and removing every block in each layer going down. Time consuming, you'll wind up with a ton of cobble but there's no way you'll get lost or confused and you won't miss anything in your mine area.

Notice the time speeding up as well? He probably paused it, put his computer's clock ahead 1 day, got to the wolve, then put it back to normal. I do it during recording all the time to make it look like I am speeding the recording up while keeping the audio, but really, I am just speeding up the game.
How does that work? Minecraft isn't affected by the internal clock at all.

I don't think Notch started making Minecraft with the intention of adding a shitload of pets, so new liquid and minecart physics or new blocks are what would give me the feeling that Minecraft's really advancing.

Imho he said you can't add a flashlight because of the way lighting works (block by block), and now that there is smoothlight, that's not an obstacle anymore = should be possible.

BetterLight (or smooth lighting) doesn't actually change how block faces are rendered, just how they appear. Basically, the same lighting system is used, just differently.
Also, I'm pretty sure that Notch couldn't add a moving light source because it would lag too badly on slower computers, with constantly changing light.
