I spend a ton of time playing around with redstone... not part of the challenge but with all that slime I picked up I just can't resist making a piston door
My reeds finally start producing enough for me to begin my library
so that I can up the effectiveness of my enchantments
I run out of redstone while making my door so I take a waterfall ride down to lava level
by the time I find my way back up there are more books to be made
so I enchant that diamond sword I've been saving for the occasion
and make myself a glowy hat to go with it
then I'm off to follow the netherbrick road
like a previous poster I find myself right next to a lava flow... Pre 6 and candidate 2 seem to love setting us up to get burned
At least I didn't spawn in a tunnel this time.. I have a good view in all directions
to test the effectiveness of my new armaments I choose to tick off every zombiepigman I see
the nether fortress is blessedly close this time
I just have to build a bridge over lava
and the blazes are at my mercy
I'm getting these achievements for the first time... has it really been so long since I went to the nether?
bye bye blazes
hello ghasts
I love the smell of napalm in the morning
and it's back to enchanting
I make my ojos de ender
and begin following them
until they run out
the only thing they have led me to is wolves
but I have no bones
so I build a lighthouse where the last eye dropped and wait for night to fall
kill a skelly and begin trying to tame wolves... success on the first bone
and the second
so I set for home with my newfound friends... unfortunately while I am fighting a pair of creepers a skeleton gets into it with my wolf brothers... somehow he misses them and strikes one of the creepers causing it to explode and kill both my pets.. I am given this record as compensation
I didn't see this on my way here.. I must be slightly off course
but not enough so that I'm unable to find my way home to make some fancy pants
and a nice pair of boots to go with
the entrance to my home is now wired up
so that it opens from the outside... now I just need enough redstone to make this work from both sides
I play my new record while contemplating my next step
I think I'll enchant a pick since I am no longer having any luck finding endermen in the area
Derrick I see a bed in that screenshot. I believe Valdark's Challenge doesn't use beds, but he can correct me if I'm wrong.
I left beds as optional. I don't use them but since you will eventually have to venture out at night to face endermen I don't see that they detract too terribly much from the challenge.
Mob traps on the other hand do go against the spirit of the challenge.
Alright this is the last 1.9.5 post... from this point on it will be 1.9.6 or better. I haven't had a chance to play today and probably will not until late tonight.
I track this bugger all through this section of the caves, hitting every dark corner until finally he comes to me.
and delivers another opalescent blue orb
[spoiler]
apparently he brought friends, I don't mind I'm all dressed up for this party
But an unexpected guest ruins the fun
so it's back to the hotel to pick out a new outfit
much better that other suit was so dingy
I had a close call here with my old nemesis lava
and am happy to find this sticky bugger... I want that piston door
ah good ol daylight... how I've missed you
I throw some things in my chests and then head out again to use up this mossy stone
I think I'm shooting at an enderman here?
I'm definitely trying to spot one here from the platform I am building
I track him down and get another pearl but somehow I return from the party with no pants
then I decide to go spelunking and scoop up some lava... it leads me to these fellas...I haven't seen them in a while
apparently since upgrading to 1.9.5
while mining coal I hit a lava flow and hop out just in time
I contemplate crossing this pool to get at the skeleton
but he's already made up his mind
I'll need this for those piston doors
and this is just a bonus
I hear slimes but as I'm digging toward the sound I spot water dripping from the ceiling ... I need to be careful.
I make it.... due to a full inventory I have to drop this single block of wood... not a bad trade
and it's back to work on the homestead
I pour and mine some obsidian ... why you ask?
Why for this of course
as I turn to head back to the build site I get a nasty surprise
and he brought backup
but no worry ... I make it out with little real damage done
I decide I want a higher level enchantment so I start on a second floor which will become my library
it still needs a lot of work but it's starting to feel like home
Does that say E Ank? Nvmd ... just weird formations that tree farms produce
[Spoiler]
I can't even enter my house without someone firing upon me
Love this idea Valdark! I've been playing on Hardcore mode since it came out in 1.9 - it adds a new element to the game that I can't really play without anymore, at least on single player!
I host a small SMP server for my roommates and I, and we like to come up with different challenges as well (e.g., race to diamond, race to gather at least 5 TNT, etc). Inspired by your challenge, we've made a "race to the end" variation. It's a team-based challenge (not hardcore, since it's SMP, unfortunately) where the first team to kill an enderdragon wins.
One slight deviation we have done, due to the frustrations of finding Endermen, has been a "trade-in" system. We allow players to trade rare/semi-rare ores for ender pearls: 1:1 for Diamond, 1:2 for gold, 1:5 for redstone, etc. The hardest part now is braving the nether for those rods!!
I don't like using server commands, so I'm wondering if you have any other ideas for how we can make this more "vanilla" - the problem with hunting Endermen is that we can become demotivated very, very quickly. The games can't last more than a few hours at the most. Any tips?
My best advice for hunting Endermen is to find large open areas... i.e. plains and deserts to hunt in. Don't leave anything alive. The more you kill the more chance an Enderman will spawn in it's place. Also when fighting them be sure to use the particles to track where they teleport to. They leave a trail so you know if you should turn around, look up, etc. This speeds up the slaughtering process. Try not to look directly at them until the moment of attack. Freezing them with your gaze seems to give them a chance to teleport before your strike lands.
Change out your armor when it is half full and keep the damaged set for emergency field repairs.
With blazes.. try not to give them a long hallway to attack you from. Keep them close quarters with cover available. I actually have less trouble with them than endermen now that I've gotten some experience. After all they have spawners so you start to get an idea of where the next one will come from and how to stop them from coming once you've cleared a few out. You can also build snowmen in the nether. This is particularly useful due to Blazes being the only mob that takes damage from snowballs.
Another update on my progress... this is still 1.9.5
Now that I have some coal I venture down into the spider filled depths
I placed this torch as the arrow struck... close call indeed
I might be in here for a while
I spot my old friend again
He disappears on me but while searching for him I find a substitute for my attention
I can always use more iron
and the bread isn't bad either.. should probably start ditching my chicken slayers though
I still don't get the subterranean sheep
I find a patch of red mushrooms
and although the system is largely unexplored I head topside due to my full inventory
and strike out across the plains hoping to find a village to protect
the only thing of note I find is this odd crater
I spot yet another enderman.. I'm having a lot more luck with that this go round
He comes to say hi... and to beat me to death with a block of dirt
I grab him by his pearls instead
and quickly spot another two
I take out the first and get into zombie slaying during the combat
Is that a spider jockey riding a spider?
Unfortunately I never get to find out because he shoots a creeper trying to get at me and the whole mess goes up in particle effects
by the end of the night my armor is shot
but I'm back in my redwood forest
where I encounter another daywalker
He's not nice enough to give me a pearl though... I'm not sure if I'm even in the right forest so I craft a compass
it guides me home just before my armor gives out completely
after some quick refitting it's back to the depths
and creeper after hissing creeper
I use what was left of my last set to keep my armor fresh
didn't this combo get me in trouble last time?
man the mobs seem to be out in force this time
ah that explains it
but even after disabling the dungeon spawner they are still coming at me from all sides
I think I was right about the extent of this cave system... I hope I can make myself leave before I'm too exhausted to find my way back
my god they just keep coming
I need to smelt and refit again
so I do something I almost never do... I wall myself in during the smelting process... they are just hitting too hard and fast for me to stay out there and fight this time
and so many of them are creepers it's ridiculous
I don't get the satisfaction of killing this one due to the skeleton shooting him... that's twice already
and what is behind that wall? Yet another dungeon... I'm getting quite a few of those this time
full inventory and I find a music disk... oh well I don't need rotten flesh anyhow
Good to see more of you stepping up to the challenge.
To all of you accepting I have added another requirement to the challenge in honor of the new 1.9.6 pre release.
Kill an Ender Dragon!
Also I have updated to 1.9.6 but my next post will be in 1.9.5 as I have collected a slew of screenies but have yet to post them. I may not have time this afternoon. If not I will have them posted tonight and be on to 1.9.6 and possibly video.
Thanks again for reading and I hope you all enjoy the challenge as much as I have been.
I head back down to begin branch mining for diamond but again am sidetracked by the ravines
I find a single tiny slime which gives me a single slime ball
Then I delve into every dark place I can find
pick up some extra red mushrooms
get slightly lost
somewhere in that darkness is an archer with sights on me
I head back to the surface after finding my staircase and begin to breed some feathers for more arrows
Then I decide to try my hand at brewing
I fill up the three bottles I have glass to make
after some research I begin to brew
I don't have anything beneficial so I start with some poison
I add some glowstone dust to make it hit harder
and some gunpowder to turn it into an effective weapon
It won't last long but hopefully it'll soften them up a bit
then I go in search of some reeds so that I can make the next one instant damage
I find this bugger hanging out in broad daylight but he skips out before I can off him
I spot some pumpkins... I've been wanting to try out the snow golem
bulls-eye
there are some reeds... just need some melons now to make this a complete success
I head home
Plant all but two of the pumpkins
and build my first watchman
These guys throw snowballs which I have heard are effective against blazes so I figure I'll test one out in the nether... success
I head back to check on the first one and he's swimming in the river
I make a set of pistons and turn one sticky with that lone slime ball, then I make myself a gate... it's primitive until I can get more slime
hopefully that'll keep out the critters
I make another brief excursion into the nether hoping to encounter some blazes... no luck so I just grab some glowstone to keep it from being a total loss
a battle with two ghasts turns this area into something that resembles a napalm strike
When I get back I find that my gate is indeed sufficient to keep out the creatures of the night
My guard has wandered a bit but that's alright I'm not hanging around tonight
I test my potion on this guy... it only takes a single sword strike to bring him down after the 16 seconds is up
I run into another cave and of course end up so deep I'll probably get the bends coming back up
but it's got a dungeon so I'm happy my castle needs more moss
sneaky spiders keep trying to hide above me
afterward I catch a brief glimpse of some familiar particles
so I lock him with my gaze and hit him with a potion to soften him up
then hit him with a falling strike and am rewarded for my heroism with my first ender pearl
several times I nearly walk off a ledge exploring this cave ridden land
an hour later I'm still wandering around lighting up the dark tunnels
I find lava level again and explore in hopes of finding diamond
all I find instead is another dungeon... I'm so glad I geared up
Of course I can't bring myself to exp farm
so it's back to this maze of tunnels
and back to the surface just in time for night to fall
a home sweet home.. It's been too long
well I only have one but here goes
it leads me almost strait out my front gate, how fortuitous
I add the mossy cobble to my home and give it a farewell as I set off in search of portals
My guard perishes fighting a skeleton while I deal with a nearby creeper... farewell frosty.. you will be missed
it seems to be leading me toward that mountain
so I climb it before trying again..
it leads me back so it must be just over this edge
I find a cave entrance about 10 blocks from where the eye lands.. I would test again but the eye disappears completely on my next toss without giving a direction that I can see
almost immediately it produces yet another dungeon... I'll trade them all for that stronghold please
this creeper sniping gallery entertains me briefly but alas I have but 3 arrows
I off the three creepers and open up the gallery to find more presents inside
and one of them I really wanted this Christmas. I now have enough slime for my piston driven gate to be complete
but do I head back? no I venture further into the dark recesses of the godforsaken cavern system
I'm running out of torches... again
but I brought enough lumber and these caves are riddled with coal
of course they seem to go on forever and my inventory is already full
what are you doing down here fluffy? Go home!
I find yet another dungeon.. I have now ditched a total of 4 buckets and a saddle just to make inventory space but I can't leave that mossy cobble behind
this one is filled with spiders... there are five inside when I crack her open
I loot it for what I can... I leave behind two more buckets and another saddle but meh... on to this ravine
through some caves and out into yet another ravine... I really should head up but after nearly 4 hours down here I'm not sure I could find my way out if I tried... even having only placed torches on my right side
I contemplate making a switchback stair up this ravine.. that should get me topside safely
but when I approach the waterfall I spot some iron near the base of the falls. It hangs precariously over lava but I've dealt with this before so I head down. I hold shift to avoid being pushed into the lava but it does push me out over it... too late I realize my fatal mistake. If I let go of shift I drop into lava, if I don't I cannot fight the current.
I only have one cobble in my active inventory so I go to place it against the obsidian I'm standing on but I miss and place it below lava level. I am now stuck with no placeable blocks at the ready and nowhere to go. I attempt to jump onto the water covered obsidian but I misjudge the overhang and land in the molten pool. I jump to get out but each time the water pushes me back before I can land on the block... it puts me out briefly but of course I'm on fire again in an instant.
I attempt to enter my inventory and bring something to the active inventory... I succeed and begin placing blocks as my health quickly dwindles... to no avail

and use that iron to make my shiny hat
then it's back into the creeper filled night
I spot ol tall dark and ugly in the distance
I keep trying to get him into a staring match but he doesn't seem to notice me way up here
so I head his way and pick up some chicken while I'm at it
then dodge as a creeper gets into it with that skeleton you may have noticed hiding behind my dinner
When I get to ol ugly's position I am disappointed as he has moved on due to the rising sun
so I head back up the hill for some more coal
then set my render distance to far and get a good lay of the land
I'm still trying to decide where to build at this point
nothing really grabbing my attention
I contemplate an ocean adventure but the food here is plentiful so I nix that idea
and decide to go cliff jumping instead
I land directly on this squid
I run across a dungeon that is visible from the surface... it's just inside a massive cave into one of the mountains
As I am inspecting it I am sideswiped by an archer so I retreat to the daylight.. I still am not properly equipped and I want this one to last
Nice little waterfall cave combo caught my eye but I don't know what I'd do with it
so I grab some more coal in the caves crisscrossing the mountain range and get my @$$ kicking boots on
as I work my way slowly back to the dungeon I spot a dirt thief
I go to arrest him
and I confiscate his pearl
1
Here we go again
This time we have redwoods
and before I forget here is the seed info
It really wouldn't be to my advantage but man I want to build up there
On the other side its plains
I make a full arsenal of chicken slayers
then head over to get a closer look at those mountains
as I do I spot a daywalker
He teleports randomly for a few minutes then I lock him with my steely gaze and he takes the bait
Unfortunately he does not stay around long enough for me to finish him off with the stake I have prepared.
As I am searching for him I find a cave
I only have enough coal for a few torches though so I cannot go spelunking just yet
I do however find some iron to get me started on upgrading my equipment
but I'm running low on lumber so I do some late afternoon logging
The sun is setting so I really should start constructing a shelter
Instead I head for some coal I spot on the mountainside
0
If I had a decent screen cap for the Mac I would.
Thank you... it was my own fault, I got greedy with the masses of iron I was collecting and didn't turn back when I should have.
0
Great run... although technically the challenge is still not complete due to the use of a mob grinder.
I understand why you used it believe me... I guess I'm just too pig headed for that.

I head back down to begin branch mining for diamond but again am sidetracked by the ravines

I make another brief excursion into the nether hoping to encounter some blazes... no luck so I just grab some glowstone to keep it from being a total loss
a battle with two ghasts turns this area into something that resembles a napalm strike

sneaky spiders keep trying to hide above me
afterward I catch a brief glimpse of some familiar particles
so I lock him with my gaze and hit him with a potion to soften him up
then hit him with a falling strike and am rewarded for my heroism with my first ender pearl
several times I nearly walk off a ledge exploring this cave ridden land
an hour later I'm still wandering around lighting up the dark tunnels
Go home!

through some caves and out into yet another ravine...
I succeed and begin placing blocks as my health quickly dwindles... to no avail

Just kidding... not a bad run... now you just need to go find one of the other strongholds instead.
