This is so cool! Any chance you could post a wide-angle shot of the whole thing as it stands now? I'm having a hard time visualizing it all, even with the videos. (If you did do this in one of the videos, I apologize; I haven't finished watching all of them yet). I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this, though!

posted a message on Notch about torch mob brightness spawning thingie
    Quote from TechyBen »
    Dear Notch.
You have mentioned that there could be some way to show a player where the save zones and dangerous zones are to play in. So here is my idea.

    "Safety Glasses".

These would be put in front of your vision when held. They put a green or red overlay to the world. Green for safe areas, red for dangerous. Made from iron and glass for example. You could probably just use an image of how bright an area is. Make it more polarised or overlay the colours. So from a glance, it is easy to see if your base is well lit. If it is red, you need more torches. This idea also means you get a direct visual feedback of the environment. The risk of just using a single detector (similar to the compass for example) is you only know how safe the block you are standing on is. With the glasses you know how safe everywhere in you visual area is. It also gives a bit more variety to just having watches.

If the colour overlay is too strong, outlines could be used instead I suppose.
    Hope that's a good idea. :smile.gif:

This is a great idea. +1 on this. Detectors are cool and all, but how do you determine their range? I really like the overlay idea. Perhaps a piece of headgear you could wear?

posted a message on Why is everybody so touchy?
When you come in and start yelling about things you know absolutely nothing about and acting like a child throwing a temper tantrum, people get annoyed. Just to refresh your memory:
I don't know or understand coding at all. But how hard is it to take what you already have from Single Player and just allow your friends to connect?
If you knew anything about it, you would know it's plenty difficult. As it is you just sound like a petulant child. The fact that you felt it necessary to make a second topic just to complain about the first one only makes this more obvious.

It's people like you who make most games unavailable until alpha AND beta are complete... Do you want notch to take minecraft away until it's finished? If so, please keep complaining.
Denver you know damn well you would like to play Survival with some of your friends. I bought the game thinking I could actually play "Survival Multiplayer" because that is what it is named. I am angry at the false advertising. I don't know or understand coding at all. But how hard is it to take what you already have from Single Player and just allow your friends to connect?
As someone who does know and understand coding - and has extensive experience in Java - I can safely say that you do not just "take what you have from single player and allow people to connect." Judging on your attitude and tone I assume you're under the age of 15 (or simply have no idea how programming and networks work), neither of which is going to win you any fans for complaining. There are justified comments and complaints that could be made about Minecraft, but "you just have to copy single player over and let people connect" is undoubtedly not one of them. I wish people would actually learn how to program - or at least how programming works - before shooting their mouths off.

Just about everyone wants SMP to be fully-functional. However, these things take time, and no one can tell you exactly when it's happening because we're not the ones doing the coding. Screaming "BUT I WANT IT NOW!!!" isn't going to do anything except annoy everyone else.

posted a message on What are you supposed to do in the nether.
Right now there's not a ton of new stuff there, it's mainly the new block types (the red block burns forever, the brown block slows things down, and the lightstone emits, well, light) and the fact that there are two new mobs to play with. Ghasts are pretty freaky at first, though you get used to them. The zombie pigmen are kinda cool too, although they don't really do much yet.

Mainly, it's about the same as anywhere else in Minecraft, except mobs are around 24/7, there are only 4 block types native to the nether (gravel as well, but be careful with that - it tends to be hanging over thin air and collapses when you mine it), and there are MASSIVE lava lakes.

It's worth checking out at least once, and I've found the red stone to be extremely helpful while mining in the real world (saves me a lot of torches). I haven't done much with the lightstone or brown mud stuff yet so I can't really comment on those. Don't worry that you're missing out; everything in the Nether is really just used to enhance your experience back in the regular world. It's cool to build down there, though.

What's going on here... a thread where not just one, but multiple people posting and actually using logic and reason? A proper understanding of what a Alpha is? Where is all the whining and overtly entitled 'boycott' type threats?

    /shudder

Kids have not gotten out of school yet :Notch:
True x1000. This is why I don't post much here - too many young ones with a sense of entitlement thinking they're 'owed' updates whenever they want or that coding doesn't take time. As someone who knows more than enough programming and computer science to understand exactly what Notch has to do, I feel Notch's development has progressed at a very reasonable pace and is remarkably bug-free considering that it is an alpha. He's done a great job, in my opinion, of balancing bug fixes with adding content. The real problem is that some people decide that they want everything, and they want it now.
