Ooooo, first person I've seen to be interested in this. I was also looking for a way for this a long time ago. Then I realized that you can do this with resource packs. Go to .minecraft-resourcepacks-yourResourcePackName-assets-minecraft-textures-entity, and then change the steve.png to yourskin.
The coolest thing about doing this is that if you ever see a player with the default steve skin on a multiplayer server, they will have your skin!
It's more fun to actually talk to people. You can talk about things and play the game at the same time, and you can coordinate PvP tactics and change them during the battle. Plus actually talking to people can make it so you get to know the person more personally. This makes relationships easier to maintain and you can joke around properly with new friends.
It gets lonely at times when I have nobody to talk to irl, so making friends online and talking to them while playing helps a lot.
I feel like a problem with this would be a person would just find a build that everyone likes, and just builds that over and over to keep winning. If you can prevent that, then it could work. Though the build battles are fun mainly because people compare a single build built in different ways. Otherwise judging would become a bit tough.
Join a server then. People "cheat" all the time because they have the means to do it, and most of the time regret it. Joining a server guarantees that you won't get a chance to go into creative.
And I don't think you need a nether spawn technically. Get dirt, saplings, seeds for food, and some starting food. You should be good from there. Plant those seeds fast and put a torch next to your saplings. Water isn't needed for food (only makes it grow faster).
The only real problem I see is blocks for building. There are very few blocks you can find naturally in the nether. Wood you get from trees will help, but that's only a couple more blocks. So you might need to go back to the overworld for a variety of building materials.
I'd say just keep it whatever, like "Minecraft Server". Get your server going, and see what happens in it. Then after a while, pick one of your server's iconic moments and name the server after that. This way the name has a meaning instead of just a random name.
Did you use a specific video guide? Or did you just try to make it yourself? If you used a video guide, which one was it?
Because as far as I remember. The "doors" for villagers need to have a different amount of space outside the door than the inside (less than 5). And the door has to have a solid block above it, not glass.

People say this about every update. Give it some time, you'll get used to it and will look back and think the old way was crappy.
