It's related (somehow) to using the larger texture packs.
I get this issue when I use 256+ sized texture packs. If I switch to a 128 pack, the issue goes away.
Try using a lower resolution version and hope that a future update takes care of it.
Someone mentioned MCP being involved; As I do not (currently) use it, I don't know if it's related. I do know that, if I use MCPatcher, the issue does not exist on textures of any size I'm able to load.
