Jun 1, 2014themoops posted a message on On "Semi-Vanilla" Servers and the "Vanilla Experience"Vanilla is an exotic flavoring that is very difficult to harvest. There's nothing plain about it. It makes no sense to use ``vanilla'' to refer to a plain server.Posted in: Discussion
Sep 30, 2010You could use a map editor to delete unused chunks, then change the seed and explore the areas you deleted. They'll generate differently and you might get more diamond.Posted in: Alpha - Survival Single Player
Maybe the ground underneath doesn't generate down to the diamond layer until you actually travel down
Nope. Chunks are horizontal-only, meaning that when new areas generate it's everything from 0 to 127.

down for everyone, or just me?
Sep 29, 2010-Make a backup copy of your mapPosted in: Mods Discussion
-Use an editing program to change all still water to air
-Run Cartograph and generate oblique, normal, and height mode
-Replace no-water map with the original backup
-You now have a topographical map of the ocean floor
Sep 29, 2010themoops posted a message on Minecraft World Share - Online Map Sharing ApplicationWow thanks for making this. I've been crawling throw back pages of the Map/Mod section trying to find maps in the sea of texture packs and this makes it a lot easier. Might upload one of my own too.Posted in: Mods Discussion
Sep 29, 20101 - Mine down to bedrock and do a branch pattern at about 4 or 5 blocks above the first layer of bedrock and higher.Posted in: Legacy Support
Quicker - mine around lava. Diamonds are often found near lava.
2 - I can't get it to work with torches+fence either, but here's a lamp post thread -> http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic ... 35&t=29847
3 - Slimes are found in very deep caves.
Sep 29, 2010I was digging a 3x3 shaft in the middle of the day to light my mine since there's no torches. Not so bad, got 14 iron. Suddenly something fell behind me, and for the first split second I figured it was just a stupid wandering pig. Then SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSPosted in: Alpha - Survival Single Player
Somehow I survived with half a heart, so it wasn't a complete loss
edit-thanks to the creeper my shaft is now 4x4
Sep 26, 2010I read something about Halo Reach recently where the Covenant glassed the planet (melted the surface into glass) and thought, hey, what would it be like to be the sole survivor of a glassed planet? I used NBT Forge to turn the surface to glass and INVedit to allow myself 1 torch and 1 sapling, then placed my spawn down in a natural cave under the glass where I presumably hid from the attack. Maintaining the base is a bit harder than usual as there's no natural source of wood or food, but the mild challenge makes it funner. Started a small tree farm then found some grass growing under glass that I tilled and found seeds. One bonus is I don't have to deal with everywhere, or at least they haven't begun spawning out here yet.Posted in: Alpha - Survival Single Player
Sep 26, 2010If we're going to be serious about doing science here it'd be nice to follow significant figure conventions. I noticed some of the gravity experiment posts showing more figures in the acceleration results than in the measured data.Posted in: Clans

Aug 12, 2010You probably have; I think I saw you there once. I've repeated the model on a couple other servers; always stick close to spawn so I can get wood for tools and buildings without having to lumberjack forever. I started storing metals in one of the storerooms in blocks. Unfortunately haven't gotten enough diamonds at one time to make a diamond block, so left with jukeboxes.Posted in: Alpha - Survival Single Player
Aug 12, 2010In one SMP server I have an underground house about 30 blocks from the spawn. To the casual passerby it's just an average little house. But hidden beneath its floor are 3 secret levels where I store several hundred logs, many torches, and a good amount of reddust (just wired the floor to store). It works well as a chest alternative.Posted in: Alpha - Survival Single Player

You know that's probably it; I call the island south of my city Stutter Island. I built a strip mine in a natural quarry and a few buildings, but then abandoned the place because I stuttered every other time I went there. At one point it was so bad I just had to dig down through the map and fall into the void to respawn.
You do realise you could have just saved and exited to the menu, and reloaded to avoid that right?
Yea that was the first thing I tried, and it did not work. As for the time I had to suicide - I could only move about 2 blocks at a time before full stop. That meant I would dig 3-4 blocks down with a pick, walk off the edge, then have to reload and do it over and over until I reached the bottom of the map.
