Sep 6, 2011techwiz242 posted a message on 1.8 Updates: Update Date RevisedSo it appears that Mojang wishes to fly solo, and without the support of the people that have bought the game. A beta is a beta for a reason. In my opinion, they should have stuck with the rapid release schedule if they really are pushing towards a version that they can call final, non-beta, etc. Save all this long term'd development stuff for expansion packs and whatnot. Another thing I noticed is that there has been a lot of activity on the twitter and facebook pages answering questions about 1.8 and so on, yet they're worried about testing time???Posted in: News

At it's most basic standpoint, yes. I plan to add some sort of update-deployment or linking to updates to make it easier on the developer. Of course, this could also link to the forum page if so desired. Also, because it is in java, it shouldn't be that hard to port to android...just throwing that out there :wink.gif:

McNN is NOT a social network or video series that will be made by me. I hope to integrate it with the modding community in general. Developers (in theory) would host a "Repository" at the same download location of their mod. They then post the link for users to add to their news list. Then, at the touch of a button, the users can be connected to the developers with updates that can be posted to that link. The idea behind this is something similar to ModLoader (which I forgot to mention, I have some plans for mod-loader mods... :sleep.gif:). It's not REQUIRED to make a mod, but helps immensely. Same thing with McNN but in a different sense. You can still develop a mod and not integrate with/ and or use McNN, but by using McNN, you can provide users a way to get information on your status on updates and such without having to search through massive amounts of "when will it be updated for..." etc.
For example, I have a repository hosted at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1650058/test.repo.final
If you go to that link (at least in chrome) you see the basic layout of a Repository file. McNN reads these to notify users of the latest information and updates In-Game or through the Commander Interface.
Does this help?

It would look pixilated, but should work. The minecraft fonts are hand-drawn I think in a texture included in the jar. It shouldn't be that hard to convert a screen-capture of the alphabet to a "texture" to swap out.As an update, the specific texture is in: minecraft.jar/font/default.png && minecraft.jar/font/alternate.png. Shouldn't be that hard to do with Gimp/Photoshop etc.

First, let me explain a little bit about what McNN is. McNN stands for the Minecraft News Network. This would be a global network for use by the Minecraft Modding community to use in order for developers to better keep in touch with their user base. With McNN, Developers can quickly and efficiently create text-based news "Repositories" to update users of changes to their Minecraft mods. All they have to do is upload these "Repositories" to a simple HTTP server or service like Dropbox (Tested, not working with SpiderOak).
In theory, there are three parts to it, the In-Game part, the "Commander" interface, and the shared library"libMcNN" for use between the two. The library provides java support for reading and writing "News Repositories". These news repositories are text-based and formatted json code. As of now, libMcNN can read from any HTTP website or file host that provides direct-instant-linking to downloads. I am unsure if this is the best idea or not. Another idea that I could easily implement is a client-server system, where libMcNN could ask the server for individual parts of the news source or the whole thing. This would not be optimal for small time modders who may not have access to a decently load balanced server. I can also easily implement a Cache system in the case of an outage on either end of connections and to determine if the user should be notified of new news.
The In-Game interface will provide basic access to saved news sources in read-only mode. I have yet to put much thought into the best design of the UI, and is currently still in development.
The "Commander Interface" provides support for reading local and remote repositories in addition to creating and editing local repositories. If the current testing with libMcNN works well enough, the UI will undergo a major re-write. I'd like to use a custom LookAndFeel for Swing while also providing the option for the default java LAF or the system specified LAF. The "Commander Interface" can also be used from the command line to be integrated into almost any build process to notify users of new versions.
If interested, please provide feedback on what you think. Is this needed? Would it help? If you know a developer, please point them to this thread or have them send me a PM with their thoughts on it. If requested, I can release an In-Development version of the "Commander Interface" for you to try out, but please note, that it is still buggy.
Thank you for sticking with me and reading this insane wall of text :biggrin.gif: ~techwiz24 (techwiz242)
[UPDATE]: I forgot, I plan to use the Java Reflection API to add special support for ModLoader Mods. The theory behind this is that for each ModLoader Mod installed, the In-Game portion searches for a String of text that points to the repository and can ask the user if they would like to be notified of updates. For Non-Modloader mods, maybe a special class?
