That half solves my problem! I am able to change/resize the mineralogy pack textures. However it is missing cold-iron starsteel and adamantine ores. Also I am left unable to retexture the item files as they are not included in the mineralogy pack. I am able to change the texture in the basemetals Mod pack. But if i try to resize them i either get a missing texture block(earlier), or minecraft throws me a class error (see spoiler).
My exact process is this: rename basemetals mod to .zip(7zip)/extract/assets/basemetals/textures/blocks/resize(paint.net)/save file/archive as .zip/rename to .jar./start minecrap/crash:)

If you want a tip to make life easier for texturing, don't edit the jar itself.
Grab any resource pack to get an idea of what the structure is, and make a folder in your resource pack folder and name it anything you like. Make sure you have a pack.mcmeta file in there (copy it from another pack and then edit the info in notepad), and you can make a pack.png if you want.
Extract the base metals assets folder into the folder you just made and then just edit from there.
When you open Minecraft it should be in your resource pack list and you can just add it on top of anything else you are using. It doesn't have to be zipped at all and you can keep editing with Minecraft open.
If you want to see your progress in game, hold F3 then hit the "t" key. This should work for any mod. You can even add multiple mods to the same folder.
My other tip is to only keep the files you're gonna change, as mod updates may change some files that you still have the old versions of. So depending on what you're doing, you may just want to keep the "textures" folder in base metals (maybe models or blockstates if you're gonna edit those), and delete the rest.

The files are not in the jar, they are in the zip that had the jar in it. Did you download the zip from an official source? What is being described is the contents of the zip. You extract the folders and the jar all together.
You should try curse. Here's a lightweight one I just found for 1.8 that has both Battle Towers and Ruins. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks pretty nice.
Still won't work. Like I said, Forge is looking for specific things. If you make custom subfolders, Forge won't recognize them. If a mod that Forge loads makes subfolders, then that's OK. Forge will recognize them.
Yeah, this is what I've come to understand as well. Considering not many of us would want this (maybe just Nerokin and me, lol) I don't think the Forge team would add the option any time soon either. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It's just funny for me that Nerokin posted this question pretty much right after I tried to do it myself.
I tried it myself recently, but I don't think so. It would be nice as an option, but I haven't found anything.
As for why someone would want one: I like excessive organization, so I would probably categorize my mods (like libs, mobs, tech, worldgen, etc). I'm sure others have their reasons too.

Alright! So I've been trying it out, and so far I love it! It already looks the best out of other world maps I've seen. I love the fact that it matches my resource pack, and for some reason, I really love the n/s/e/w indicator in the corner (it looks really nice and simple).
One suggestion I have is to either not have the so much of the map visible at once, or to have the option to toggle something like that. What I mean is that only a small area around the player could be visible, and more appears as the player walks around, in order to encourage exploration.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the planned features and integration with the minimap. Personally, I wouldn't need to see mobs on the big map, but waypoints would be great.
One issue I've caught is this exception in my log, as well as a lot of logspam:

I guess it might be an issue with a specific mod? But the message ballooned my log to 124mbs, and eventually my game started to freeze as I noticed that all my ram was taken up (out of 6gb). I've never maxed out before on 1.8.9, so that really surprised me.

Yes. In the last version of MCDungeon you needed to specify the numerical ID -- I think the devs are moving to text-IDs in the next iteration?
See the example configuration for lucky_blocks -- this shows how to define a new module-sourced item that can be used elsewhere in the configs, though you need to use the numerical ID sadly.
Alternatively, you can create an NBT file to define the item, and hook this in using the file_* object definitions (again, see the Lucky_block sample config for an example of how to do this). However I think that you still need to use a numerical ID rather than text ones for compatibilty with the underlying libraries being used in the 0.14.x branch
Oh, boo! Thanks for the info though! I think I'll give up on adding mod items until after the change to text ids, though. As it's just way too much hassle to adjust the numerical id per mod setup/mod update/mod whatever.
Hiya, I downloaded the latest loot++ for 1.8.9 (Loot++-1.4_for_1.8.9.jar), then deleted my chest_content config so it would reload with the metadata fixes, but I noticed that the new file has the metadata info at the end of the item id, rather than at the end of the list like so:

If you want a tip to make life easier for texturing, don't edit the jar itself.
Grab any resource pack to get an idea of what the structure is, and make a folder in your resource pack folder and name it anything you like. Make sure you have a pack.mcmeta file in there (copy it from another pack and then edit the info in notepad), and you can make a pack.png if you want.
Extract the base metals assets folder into the folder you just made and then just edit from there.
When you open Minecraft it should be in your resource pack list and you can just add it on top of anything else you are using. It doesn't have to be zipped at all and you can keep editing with Minecraft open.
If you want to see your progress in game, hold F3 then hit the "t" key. This should work for any mod. You can even add multiple mods to the same folder.
My other tip is to only keep the files you're gonna change, as mod updates may change some files that you still have the old versions of. So depending on what you're doing, you may just want to keep the "textures" folder in base metals (maybe models or blockstates if you're gonna edit those), and delete the rest.

The files are not in the jar, they are in the zip that had the jar in it. Did you download the zip from an official source? What is being described is the contents of the zip. You extract the folders and the jar all together.

Yeah, this is what I've come to understand as well. Considering not many of us would want this (maybe just Nerokin and me, lol) I don't think the Forge team would add the option any time soon either. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It's just funny for me that Nerokin posted this question pretty much right after I tried to do it myself.

I tried it myself recently, but I don't think so. It would be nice as an option, but I haven't found anything.
As for why someone would want one: I like excessive organization, so I would probably categorize my mods (like libs, mobs, tech, worldgen, etc). I'm sure others have their reasons too.

Alright! So I've been trying it out, and so far I love it! It already looks the best out of other world maps I've seen. I love the fact that it matches my resource pack, and for some reason, I really love the n/s/e/w indicator in the corner (it looks really nice and simple).
One suggestion I have is to either not have the so much of the map visible at once, or to have the option to toggle something like that. What I mean is that only a small area around the player could be visible, and more appears as the player walks around, in order to encourage exploration.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the planned features and integration with the minimap. Personally, I wouldn't need to see mobs on the big map, but waypoints would be great.

I guess it might be an issue with a specific mod? But the message ballooned my log to 124mbs, and eventually my game started to freeze as I noticed that all my ram was taken up (out of 6gb). I've never maxed out before on 1.8.9, so that really surprised me.

Oh, boo! Thanks for the info though! I think I'll give up on adding mod items until after the change to text ids, though. As it's just way too much hassle to adjust the numerical id per mod setup/mod update/mod whatever.

Hiya, I downloaded the latest loot++ for 1.8.9 (Loot++-1.4_for_1.8.9.jar), then deleted my chest_content config so it would reload with the metadata fixes, but I noticed that the new file has the metadata info at the end of the item id, rather than at the end of the list like so:
