Minecraft 1.8 has so many performance problems that I just don't know where to start with.
Maybe the biggest and the ugliest problem is the memory allocation. Currently the game allocates (and throws away immediately) 50 MB/sec when standing still and up to 200 MB/sec when moving. That is just crazy.
What happens when the game allocates 200 MB memory every second and discards them immediately?
1. With a default memory limit of 1GB (1000 MB) and working memory of about 200 MB Java has to make a full garbage collection every 4 seconds otherwise it would run out of memory. When running with 60 fps, one frame takes about 16 ms. In order not to be noticeable, the garbage collection should run in 10-15 ms maximum. In this minimal time it has to decide which of the several hundred thausand newly generated objects are garbage and can be discarded and which are not. This is a huge amount of work and it needs a very powerful CPU in order to finish in 10 ms.
2. Why not give it more memory?
Let's give Minecraft 4 GB of RAM to play with. This would need a PC with at least 8 GB RAM (as the real memory usage is almost double the memory visible in Java). If the VM decides to use all the memory, then it will increase the time between the garbage collections (20 sec instead of 4), but it will also increase the garbage collection time by 4, so every 20 seconds there will be one massive lag spike.
3. Why not use incremental garbage collection?
The latest version of the launcher by default enables incremental garbage collection (-XX:+CMSIncrementalMode) which in theory should replace the one big GC with many shorter incremental GCs. However the problem is that the time at which the smaller GCs happen and their duration are mostly random. Also they are not much shorter (maybe 50%) than a full scale GC. That means that the FPS starts to fluctuate up and down and there are a lot of random lag spikes. The stable FPS with a lag spike from time to time is replaced with unstable FPS and microstutter (or not very micro depending on the CPU). This strategy can only work with a powerful enough CPU so that the random lag spikes become small enough not to be noticeable.
4. How did that work in previous releases?
The previous Minecraft releases were much less memory hungry. The original Notch code (pre 1.3) was allocating about 10-20 MB/sec which was much more easy to control and optimize. The rendering itself needed only 1-2 MB/sec and was designed to minimize memory waste (reusing buffers, etc). The 200 MB/sec is pushing the limits and forcing the garbage collector to do a lot of work which takes time. If it was possible to control how and when the GC works then maybe it would be possible to distribute the GC pauses such that they are not noticeable or less disturbing. However there is no such control in the current Java VM.
5. Why is 1.8 allocating so much memory?
This is the best part - over 90% of the memory allocation is not needed at all. Most of the memory is probably allocated to make the life of the developers easier.
- There are huge amounts of objects which are allocated and discarded milliseconds later.
- All internal methods which used parameters (x, y, z) are now converted to one parameter (BlockPos) which is immutable. So if you need to check another position around the current one you have to allocate a new BlockPos or invent some object cache which will probaby be slower. This alone is a huge memory waste.
- The chunk loading is allocating a lot of memory just to pass vertex data around. The excuse is probably "mutithreading", however this is not necessary at all (see the last OptiFine for 1.7).
- the list goes on and on ...
The general trend is that the developers do not care that much about memory allocation and use "best industry practices" without understanding the consequences. The standard reasoning being "immutables are good", "allocating new memory is faster than caching", "the garbage collector is so good these days" and so on.
Allocating new memory is really faster than caching (Java is even faster than C++ when it comes to dynamic memory), but getting rid of the allocated memory is not faster and it is not predictable at all. Minecraft is a "real-time" application and to get a stable framerate it needs either minimal runtime memory allocation (pre 1.3) or controllable garbage collecting, which is just not possible with the current Java VM.
6. What can be done to fix it?
If there are 2 or 3 places which are wasting memory (bugs), then OptiFine can fix them individually. Otherwise a bigger refactoring of the Minecraft internals will be needed, which is a huge task and not possible for OptiFine.
7. Example
A sample log of GC activity with effective FPS for the GC lag spikes is available here.
- the average rendering FPS is about 50 FPS
- the GC lag spikes have effective FPS of 7-20
- there are 1-2 lag spikes per second caused by GC activity
tldr; When 1.8 is lagging and stuttering the garbage collector is working like crazy and is doing work which has nothing to do with the game itself (rendering, running the internal server, loading chunks, etc). Instead it is constantly cleaning the mess behind the code which thinks that memory allocation is "cheap".

Mod Compilation Policy
Due to the alarming number of new modpacks wanting to include RedPower lately,
and my inability to possibly evaluate and answer everyone asking, I've decided
to cut way back on allowing it.
Here's the deal:
- Established modpacks or private server packs only. If your post
count is below 100, and your modpack is less than a month old, I'll just say
no. A "private server pack" refers to a modpack intended to be used by a
closed membership Minecraft server and distributed only to those members.
- You must have my permission. Post on this thread.
- Proper credit and attribution. "RedPower by Eloraam", with a link to this thread, is a suitable example.
- Non-commercial, non-profit mod packs only. If you're going to bundle my mod, you can't use adf.ly or similar for the compilation pack. I'm OK with giving my work away, but not having someone else profit from it.

MALfunction84 posted a message on [1.2.5] Somnia [SSP|ML] (1.4.x WIP)Announcement: Somnia has been updated by another developer here.Posted in: WIP Mods
Special FAQ:
Q: Why hasn't Somnia been updated to 1.4/1.5/1.x?
A: I don't have Internet at home. (Update: it has.)
Q: Why do you need Internet to work on the mod?
A: To research while I'm coding. The client/server model changed dramatically in 1.3, and I want to be able to refer to APIs, changelogs, and tutorials.
Q: Why don't you have Internet at home?
A: I just moved into a new house. The previous owners had AT&T DSL, but when I tried to sign up, AT&T said they are at "maximum capacity." AT&T is the only provider in this area. They've assured me they have plans to expand, but they haven't given me any timeline. My only choice is to wait.
Q: What about getting a wireless hotspot?
A: The wireless coverage in my area is terrible. I can make phone calls, but the data transfer rate is basically unusable.
Q: What about satellite Internet?
A: That is expensive, capped, and cuts out when it rains. In short, it sucks. We also just had a baby, so I'm trying to keep monthly expenses to a minimum.
Q: How are you visiting the forums if you don't have Internet?
A: I visit the forums from work. This also explains why I don't reply on weekends.
Q: Why don't you release the source code so someone else can update Somnia?
A: Mainly because it wouldn't help. Because of the changes that occurred in 1.3, I have to rewrite the mod from scratch. The source code for the 1.2.5 version is completely worthless. Anyone else is welcome to rewrite it from scratch, as I hope to do eventually.
Q: Would donating money help?
A: I can't think of a way that it would, but thanks for offering. When AT&T refused me service, I told them, "Gee, that's too bad. I would love to give you money." Money is not the problem.
Original post follows.

- Single-player only.
- Optional: Minecraft Forge.
- Mar 12, 2013: For those who have not been following the topic, development is stalled. Even with a local dev environment, the lack of internet access is crippling. However, I've filed an issue with Mojang for their mod API (MCAPI).
- Dec 10, 2012: I managed to set up a dev environment even without an internet connection. It looks like I'll be able to get the mod working with a combination of the PlayerInteractEvent and the PlayerSleepInBedEvent.
- Nov 27, 2012: I still don't have internet access at home after the recent move. I can visit the forum from work, but obviously I can't work on Minecraft mods here. Meanwhile, Forge has added something I think I can use, but I won't know until I can check out the code... which of course requires an internet connection.
- Oct 29, 2012: I am still waiting for my submission to be included in Forge. I also don't have an internet connection at home (more details here and here), which pretty much prevents me from doing any work.
- Sep 11, 2012: I think I've overcome the learning curve, but Minecraft Forge didn't quite offer the functionality I need for multiplayer support. I've submitted code to Minecraft Forge and am waiting for its inclusion.
- Aug 22, 2012: The update for Minecraft 1.3 is delayed indefinitely while I try to figure out multiplayer support and the new Forge (read more).
- Aug 04, 2012: The update for Minecraft 1.3 will come soon after MCP, ModLoader, and Minecraft Forge all get updated. Barring any huge problems, this does mean that Somnia will finally work in multiplayer.

- Feb 28, 2011: Somnia v1 [1.3_01] released!
- Feb 25, 2011: Development has resumed now that new versions of MCP and ModLoader came out. The next version of Somnia will modify the behavior of native beds instead of adding a new block.
- Feb 22, 2011: Notch added beds in Beta 1.3. I will make a decision about this mod's future before the week's end.
- Feb 19, 2011: Somnia v0 [1.2_01] released!
- Feb 18, 2011: I know beds will be officially added to the base game in the next update, but I didn't know that when I started work on this mod. The first release will work for Client Beta 1.2_02, and I will make a decision about continuing development after we all see how beds are done in the base game.
Features- Simulates the world: While you're sleeping, the world continues as if you are standing idle the whole time. Crops and trees will grow, smelting continues, weather progresses, mobs are active (even mobs added by other mods), and dropped items decay. You also heal an amount based on how long you've spent sleeping and the difficulty setting, but you'll also grow hungry. The simulation will take a few moments.
- No sleep-triggered monster spawns: Monsters spawn normally and may still attack you in your sleep, but only if they can actually reach you. No more worrying if your bed is in an "unsafe" location. If you'd be safe while awake, you'll be safe while asleep.
- Sleep/wake at any time: Sleep any time, day or night. Wake automatically at the next dawn/dusk or manually at any time. If you have a Clock item in your hand, you can choose when you wake from among 16 options throughout the day.
- Control your spawn point: Before you sleep, you can choose whether or not sleeping will reset your spawn point.
- Maximum compatibility: This mod doesn't add any new Block or Item IDs. It just changes the behavior of the native bed. It will not corrupt your save files, and it is compatible with most other mods. It also disables itself in multiplayer.
ModLoader only:- Download ModLoader and install it into your minecraft.jar file.
- Run Minecraft and make sure it still works. If not, reinstall ModLoader and make sure you didn't miss any steps (like removing the META-INF folder).
- Copy the contents the Somnia ZIP into your minecraft.jar file.
- Enjoy!
- Download ModLoader and Minecraft Forge and install both into your minecraft.jar file.
- Run Minecraft and make sure it still works. If not, reinstall ModLoader and Minecraft Forge and make sure you didn't miss any steps (like removing the META-INF folder).
- Copy the Somnia ZIP into .minecraft/mods.
- Enjoy!
The first time you run Minecraft with Somnia installed, a file called mod_Somnia.cfg will appear in your .minecraft/config directory. If you want to change any of the options, open this file in a text editor. I have described each property below. To reset to the defaults, make sure Minecraft is closed, delete the file, and restart Minecraft.- heal.easy - The heal rate, in hearts-per-hour, while sleeping on Easy difficulty.
- heal.normal - The heal rate, in hearts-per-hour, while sleeping on Normal difficulty.
- heal.hard - The heal rate, in hearts-per-hour, while sleeping on Hard difficulty.
- hunger.easy - The hunger rate, in foods-per-hour, while sleeping on Easy difficulty.
- hunger.normal - The hunger rate, in foods-per-hour, while sleeping on Normal difficulty.
- hunger.hard - The hunger rate, in foods-per-hour, while sleeping on Hard difficulty.
- respawn.default - Controls the default value of the "Reset Spawn" button.
- respawn.visible - Controls whether the "Reset Spawn" button is visible.
valid.worlds - Comma-separated list of world IDs that allow sleep. Normal = 0; Nether = -1; End = 1.(Doesn't work yet. Sorry!)- armor.difficulty - Minimum difficulty where armor must be taken off to sleep. 0 = Peaceful, 1 = Easy, 2 = Normal, 3 = Hard, 4 = Hardcore, 5 = Disabled.

Mod Packs Featuring Somnia
The following mod compilations include Somnia (with permission). I won't allow any new mod packs to include Somnia--there are just too many--so please don't ask.
Mod Compatibility
This mod does not add any new block IDs, so you can safely begin using it in an existing world, and it will not corrupt your world if you remove it. If you are using ModLoader and install it into minecraft.jar, the only core file it changes is the Bed block, so it should be compatible with most other mods. If you are using Minecraft Forge, it should be compatible with any Forge mod.
Some compatibility questions involving specific mods have come up in the past, so I have addressed them here:- Better Than Wolves: Sleeping while a machine destroyed blocks caused an accumulation of particles in v18 and earlier which lagged the game. This is fixed in v19 and later.
- Dynamic Lights: Sleeping while using Somnia
v9v12 and earlier will cause crashes, but I've fixed that inv10v13 and later. - HD Textures: As with many mods, it may be tricky to get Somnia working with HD textures, but it is possible.
- Millenaire: Does work with Somnia, despite some perceptions. The townsfolk don't build at night, but they do make babies.
- Sometimes the game freezes up while sleeping and displays the message "Saving chunks." A look at ModLoader.txt reveals a ConcurrentModificationException. Other players using Millenaire have had the same problem while awake, so it's not an issue with Somnia.
- MoreBeds+ (outdated): The creator of this mod was kind enough to modify it so it would be compatible with Somnia.
- The Seasons Mod: When using Somnia v12 and earlier, seasons did not correctly advance when you slept. This is fixed in v13 and later.
Known Issues
- Can take a rather long time to simulate, especially if you have a slow machine. This is likely why Mojang chose to implement sleep the way they did.
- Update: v10 (and higher) contains an optimization that improves performance. If you're recording with FRAPS, sleeping should be much faster.
- Update 2: This was adjusted further in v13. Autosave is completely disabled while sleeping.
- Update 3: Performance across the board took a huge hit in Minecraft 1.8, and the simulation speed suffers as a result.
- Update 4: Performance has improved in 1.9pre5, so I've removed the benchmarking poll for now. I will add it back later.
- Does not work with some parts of the Doggy Talents mod. Its developer has added a workaround, but we're working to find a better solution.
FAQ
Q: I've encountered a problem with your mod. Can you help me?
A: First, consider that you might have done something incorrectly. Start with a clean minecraft.jar and go through the installation once more. Make sure you can consistently reproduce the problem. Here are a few common mistakes:- Make sure you installed ModLoader (and Minecraft Forge if applicable) correctly.
- Make sure you deleted the META-INF directory from your minecraft.jar file.
- Make sure you're installing the correct version for your version of Minecraft.
- Are you using the latest release of Minecraft? If not, what version?
- Are you using the latest release of the mod? If not, what version?
- Are you using ModLoader or Minecraft Forge?
- What exactly is the problem? (e.g. "Black screen" or "Crash")
- When does it happen? (e.g. "Every time I start Minecraft" or "When I sleep with a pig nearby.")
- Do you have other mods installed? If so, which ones?
- Is there an error or stack trace? (Check .minecraft/ModLaoder.txt near the end.)
Q: Can I include your mod in my mod pack?
A: Thank you for your interest, but no. I've given permission to the mod packs above. I will not extend this permission to any more mod packs. There are simply too many out there. (more info)
Q: Can I mirror your mod?
A: No, I would prefer that you simply link to this thread. The best thing for users is for the mod's presence to all be in one place. That way, it's a one-stop-shop for people to download the newest versions, get support, and offer suggestions.
Q: Why does the simulation take so long?
A: The simulation is a lot of number-crunching, so if you have a slow processor or are running intensive processes in the background (like frapps), it's going to take longer. There are also some design choices made by Minecraft's developers that make it impossible for me to optimize. Minecraft's code mixes graphics with logic in several places, so the simulation performs some unnecessary graphics-related operations that can't be skipped.
A number of users have reported a 10-20x speed decrease while running frapps. If you're recording a video, best to suspend recording before you sleep.
Q: Can you add a way to sleep "normally" where the simulation doesn't run?
A: This mod is more about realism than utility. An option for the "normal" bed behavior would defeat the purpose. If you want to disable the mod without uninstalling it, open .minecraft/config/ModLoader.cfg with a text editor and set mod_Somnia=off.
Q: How does Somnia work? If I'm a developer, how do I make sure my mod simulates correctly?
A: It's too complicated to explain in one or two paragraphs. Expand the spoiler for details.
Minecraft's world progresses using a series of ticks. There are 24,000 ticks in one Minecraft day. One day in Minecraft is also 10 real-world minutes. This means there are 2400 ticks per minute or 40 ticks per second.
During a tick, Minecraft does a number of things:- Tracks player stats.
- Updates GUI overlay (scrolls chat text, animates health/hunger bars when low).
- Updates dynamic textures (like lava and water).
- Accepts and processes user input (mouse/keyboard).
- Updates the renderer (fog, lighting).
- Moves the clouds.
- Updates entities (furnaces, crops, mobs...)
- Progresses weather.
- Spawns mobs.
- Saves world data to disk (occasionally).
- Advance the world time.
- Update blocks (flowing lava/water, falling sand, hydrated soil).
- Creates particles (smoke, torch/furnace flames, redstone sparks).
- Animates and removes particles.
- Triggers tick behavior for ModLoader mods.
- Pauses until the next tick if all of the above takes less than 1/40 of a second. (Note: If it takes more time than that, you experience lag.)
For developers, here's the breakdown:
beforeSleep(); //Mutes sounds, turns down graphics settings, disables world auto-save. while (sleeping()) { if (ticksElapsed % 10 == 0) { mc.effectRenderer.clearEffects(); //Remove all particles to avoid accumulation. } mc.renderGlobal.updateClouds(); //Move the clouds. world.updateEntities(); //Update entities (furnaces, crops, mobs...) world.tick(); //Progress weather, spawn mobs, tick++, update blocks. ModLoader.OnTick(0, mc); //Update other ModLoader mods. resetDynamicLights(); //Special handler for compatibility with Dynamic Lights mod. } afterSleep(); //Restores sounds, restores graphics settings, enables world auto-save.
If you are adding new content, Somnia will simulate behavior in the following methods:- Entity.onUpdate()
- Block.updateTick()
- Mod.OnTickInGame()
- Block.randomDisplayTick()
- EntityFX.onUpdate()
Q: How did you come up with the idea?
A: I was interested in creating a mod (my first), so I asked a friend of mine for ideas. This was back in Beta 1.2, before there were beds at all, and he wanted a way to skip the night so he could focus on building during the day. I wanted to make sure it didn't feel like cheating, which meant preserving the risk involved with sleeping in a world full of monsters. That's where I got the idea of just simulating the world. The monsters are active while you're asleep, so if they can get to you, they will attack you. That put a new emphasis on building a solid home base, which I thought was a cool idea. Simulating the world also meant that things like smelting would continue, which would save us more time. I used this tutorial as a jumping-off point. From there, I found out about MCP and ModLoader.
It wasn't a unique idea, of course. A lot of people had similar ideas, like in this thread. When Notch added beds and sleep in 1.3, I decided to continue developing the mod and to just repurpose his bed, which looked better anyway. (The first version of Somnia added its own bed block.) Most of people's complaints about Minecraft's native sleep are because it seems so artificial. There are these arbitrary rules that don't apply any other time, so it upsets our expectations. Somnia "fixes" these by acting the way real sleep acts -- you're idle and vulnerable for a long time, and the world continues.
For those who have wondered, I didn't really have complaints against native sleep in mind when I created Somnia because at the time, there was no sleep in Minecraft. I just brought forward my own implementation, which some people preferred over the native one.

Arrrg posted a message on [1.5.2] AMCO: About 150 of the best mods all working togetherPosted in: Minecraft ModsAMCO: Arrrg's MineCraft OverhaulLast Updated: Monday July 15 1:45PM(PST)What is it: Over a hundred of the best mods out there, all tested and working together in one download (on Arrrg's system at least).
What's in it: Higher resolution graphics, new art, new minerals, new tools, better landscapes, new plants, more arrows, machienes, more mobs, awesome buildings, and tons more. See the "Credits and Content" links below.
New videos for 1.5.2 wanted! Your video could be featured here.
Here is a very nice intro and start of a "Let's Play" by ThePacerGamer:
And, here is a walkthrough video of the old "Majic School" demo world:
Thank you very much Masternerd12!
Here is a nice installation video by TrolledUnicorn:
And here is a Spanish install video by Nehrox:
How to install it:
1) Backup Everything!
Type %appdata% at the top of any explorer window to find the .minecraft folder.Backup the entire folder by renaming it ‘minecraft_save’ (note the lack of ‘.’ at front).
2) AMCO requires a fresh copy of the game!
There are over 150 mods in AMCO, so it is likely to conflict with anything but a fresh install.
Log on to minecraft.net and get a fresh copy here: [url="http://www.minecraft.net/login.jsp"]minecraft.net/login[/url]
3) After getting a vanilla copy of minecraft 1.5.2
Download AMCO 1_5_2 Rev 4 for clients here: [url="http://www.mediafire.com/download/6w6jnue43drn9g2/AMCO1.5.2_Rev4a_Client.zip"]ACMOfor 1.5.2 Rev4a Client[/url]
Download AMCO 1_5_2 Rev 4 for servers here: [url="http://www.mediafire.com/download/9mu604x52ssxxoc/AMCO1.5.2_Rev4a_Server.zip"]ACMOfor 1.5.2 Rev4a Server[/url]
A very nice Rev4 example world is also available here: [url="http://www.mediafire.com/download/y70y9gup7d7ufid/CliffsOfInsanity_Rev4.zip"]Cliffs of Insanity Demo World[/url]
It hase some awesome builds and shows a few things that are possible.
4) Extract the contents of the "toRoot" folder to your new .minecraft folder.
5) Extract the contents of the "toJar" folder to your fresh minecraft.jar or minecraft_server.jar file.
The minecraft.jar file is inside the bin folder, which is inside the .minecraft folder.
For servers, the minecraft_server.jar file is inside the minecraft folder created while creating the server.
For Linux servers: prevent gui/xwindows crashes by useing -Djava.awt.headless=true
6) Done. Start the game and enjoy a whole new aspect of Minecraft!
All the new content takes a while to load, so it can be a few minutes for the game to start.
The same is true for generating a new world. Patience is required.
7) Optional: Don't like one of the mods? Disable it.
Go to the .minecraft/mods folder and delete it or move it to some other folder.
How to Uninstall it: in case something goes horribly wrong
Simply replace the contents of your .minecraft folder with the contents of the minecraft_save folder created in Step 1.

Or extract one of the LaunchMinecraft.bat files to your destop and use it to start minecraft.
1GBLaunchMinecraft.bat assigns 1GB of memory to the game and is for smaller systems.
2GBLaunchMinecraft.bat assigns 2GB and is for most systems.
* Found a Bug? Haveing Trouble?
If you have trouble, be sure to post your error log to the forum.
We can probibly help you get running, but not without an error log.
Go to your .minecraft/crash-report folder and post your latest file log file.
Be polite in your comments. Lots of other people will read what you write.
It's also nice to use [spoiler'] [/spoiler'] brackets to hide the blah-blah (without the ').

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is ModLoader? -A: http://tiny.cc/PAIN Q: Where is ModLoader? -A: http://tiny.cc/PAIN Q: How do I install ModLoader? -A: http://tiny.cc/PAIN Q: Why did you link me that image? -A: Because you can't read. What part of "read this whole post" did you not understand? Q: Why does my game freeze on the loading screen? -A: The most likely answer is you forgot to delete META-INF, or your archive tool didn't want to delete it. Q: Why does my game black screen? -A: There are a number of reasons this could happen, the most likely is that you're trying to play alpha through the browser. Mods don't work with the browser version. I do not care about black screens. Get me the error log. Follow the instructions under the "Linux / Other" download on www.minecraft.net. This applies to all OS. Q: Do these mods work with [older version]? -A: No, they are designed for Minecraft 1.6.2. Q: The AudioMod description hurt my head, is there some kind of readme that explains it in better detail? -A: Not yet, so, in the meantime, feel free to contact me about it in IRC, and I will help. Q: How come 7z throws out "Not implemented" OR WinRAR gives me an error when I try to add stuff to the jar? -A: Update 7-Zip or close Minecraft. Q: How do I uninstall the mods? -A: You restore from a backup of minecraft.jar, and in case you didn't back it up, delete the version file in the bin folder, and Minecraft will redownload everything. Q: What does input == null mean? -A: You failed to read instructions, try again... Q: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: ...? -A: You failed to read instructions, try again... Q: java.lang.SecurityException: SHA1 digest error ...? -A: You failed to read instructions, try again... Q: java.util.zip.ZipException: invalid entry size? -A: Stop using that bad program and get a real one! Like 7-Zip or WinRAR! Q: java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: Bad version number in .class file? -A: Update java. On mac? Too bad. Q: java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: ______ : Unsupported major.minor version 51.0 -A: Either get JRE 7 or tell mod creator to not use JDK 7. Q: How can I best contact you? -A: In the channel #risucraft, on the esper.net IRC. Q: What if this FAQ doesn't solve my problem or answer my question? -A: Then you can post, or contact us, preferably on IRC.

ModLoader 1.6.2
A mod, kind of like a mod manager, that stops conflicts with mods that alter rendering, recipes, add entities, gui, smeltables or fuel. If you're a modder, feel free to decompile this and learn how to make mods work with it. Inherit BaseMod and override any methods as necessary. The mod's main class file should be prefixed with 'mod_'. Read the Javadoc for information on methods available.

Elemental Arrows 1.6.2
The Elemental Arrows mod adds four new types of arrows; explosive arrows, fire arrows, ice arrows, and a joke weapon, egg arrows.. They are crafted the same way as normal arrows, but the head is replaced based on the element; gunpowder for explosive, coal for fire, snowball for ice, and egg for, well, egg. Crafting an explosive arrow only gives you one arrow, and it explodes upon impact. Crafting a fire arrow gives you one arrow, that will ignite stuff upon impact. Crafting an ice arrow gives you one arrow, that will freeze water into ice, lava springs into obsidian, put out fire, and break torches. Egg arrows spawn chickens upon impact with the ground, but there's a secret too. Lightning arrows strike lightning where ever they hit, use diamond in recipe. Homing bow recipe is same layout as regular bow, but diamond instead of sticks. Requires ModLoader 1.6.2.

More Stackables 1.6.2
This mod makes saddles, doors, and signs up to 8 in a stack, minecarts and boats up to 4 in a stack. This is great for storage and for using workbenches, chests, or furnaces, as you no longer consume your food! Requires ModLoader 1.6.2.

Sign Tags 1.6.2
Type [time] into a sign, and it will show the current time. You can also type [x], [y], or [z] and find the current position of the sign in regards to that axis. [a|b] is a redstone input function for signs, where text replacing 'a' will be shown when the sign is powered, otherwise 'b' is shown. Type [light], and it will show you the current light level of the sign's position. [biome], [temp], [humid] each tell you the biome you're in, the temperature of that area, and the humidity of that area, respectively. [temp], [humid] will no longer function in Nether.

Death Chest 1.6.2
When you die, if you have a chest in your inventory, it will be placed where you die, or in the closest available spot. The chest will be filled with as many items as possible. Items stored in the crafting slot are still lost, as usual, and any excess that won't fit in the chest will be dropped.

AudioMod 1.6.2(Not updated for now)
AudioMod is an upgrade of sorts, and a modder's utility. Included in this mod is CodecIBXM, created by Paul at www.paulscode.com, who is the creator of the sound system used in Minecraft. It allows Minecraft to play (in addition to ogg, wav, and mus files), xm, s3m, and mod files. The only readily available feature of this mod is the ability to add new music, however, it adds support for modders to add new records and sound effects. There is a slight increase in load time when using this mod. Using this, you can also use custom sounds, alongside the originals. Custom music and sound goes into the resources folder, music in mod/music. Custom sounds go into mod/sound. For example, if I were to add a new footstep sound effect to stone, I'd put the new stone1.ogg in mod/sound/step. In game, the new sound would occasionally be played, alongside the originals. Custom sounds for things like the menu click and water do not always work, at the moment.

Floodgate 1.6.2
Floodgate block can be used as either a floodgate, allowing toggleable water and lava falls, or as a trapdoor. When you place the floodgate control block, it will place a gate in front of the control block in the direction you are facing. Applying redstone power to this will remove the gate. Use the control block to open the GUI where you can place supporting blocks that will replace how the gate looks. Requires ModLoader 1.6.2.
The recipe:

Spawner GUI 1.6.2
Adds a GUI to all mob spawners, that will allow you to pick what mob to spawn. I also reallowed mining spawners. You can disable spawners with redstone aswell. Should be compatible with all mobs, but don't expect the mobs with special spawn conditions to work everywhere. Animals require grass, Monsters require darkness, Slimes require being in their special chunks, and 0-16 depth. Requires ModLoader 1.6.2.

Block Distortion 1.6.2
This mod is just an experiment. Everything that is 3D (Mostly noticeable on blocks) has a random distortion. Known issues include: Clouds randomize as they move across the sky, held items look rather odd, and GUI elements may be screwed up. I don't recommend using this mod long.

Biosphere 1.6.2
This is a new generator. You may select this generator in More World Options when creating world. In this generator, the world is made up of massive spheres with glass domes. Inside these spheres are random biomes. There is a random chance of a lake being placed in the center of each sphere. Usually water, but rarely lava. Bordering this lake you will find sand for water, or gravel for lava. Connecting each sphere is a wooden bridge with fence rail. Beside each sphere is a smaller sphere, which is where you will find diamond and lapis lazuli. These ores only occur here, the others are equally spread throughout the spheres. The cave generator used here is a modified Nether cave generator, where like on the surface, will generate lava below a certain level. if this lava reaches the outside, an obsidian wall will be made to hold it in. Many options can be changed in ".minecraft/config/Biosphere.cfg". Requires ModLoader 1.6.2.

Armor Stand 1.6.2
This block will give you a place to show off your armor. Just place the block and right click on the platform. You can choose from a selection of skins to hold your armor, as well as have it stare at you, constantly. You may also change the texture of platform by putting block in the last slot. Known issues include: placing a block inside of dummy, standing on its head, possible inability for mobs to path around it. Recipe is 3 solid stone blocks along bottom, with 2 sticks in the middle. Requires ModLoader 1.6.2.

King_Korihor posted a message on [1.6.2] FallFix MC Bug Patch for Spawning [SP/MP]== Added Note ==Posted in: Minecraft Mods
This bug, while technically fixed in the newer version of Minecraft, still is "broken" as of Minecraft version 1.6.1. My suggestion of introducing a parameter into the game has been partially implemented by Jeb & Dinnerbone, but unfortunately it is still a hard coded constant in another class and not yet something read by the configuration file or anything else similar. It is for this reason I'm updating this "mod" for people using extreme survival maps.
== Introduction ==
I've encountered a bug in Minecraft 1.3.x that doesn't seem to be fixed in 1.3.2, and while I've reported the bug on the MC Wiki and have gone out of my way to publicize the bug, I have doubts it will be fixed any time soon or at least not before the 1.4 branch, if even then. My hope would be that this mod would be completely shut down by Dinnerbone or somebody else in the Mojang dev team by simply fixing this bug.
What is happening is that when players spawn in a new world, including when they die or appear in the world for the first time, the terrain generator first of all tries to determine a suitable location for players to spawn. After that happens, on servers the spawn location is "fuzzed up" to randomize the location a little bit so players don't all bunch up together at the same location. For a great many servers, this is even acceptable behavior as the spawn location is a nice flat location in the middle of a "public square" and expected.
This is a new behavior for people used to single player maps though, so it really turns into a bug. It becomes a very serious bug for people who are using extreme survival island maps, especially things like the very popular SkyBlock map by Noobcrew and numerous related maps which have a very tiny initial spawn area surrounded by "dangerous" areas. At times you need to respawn as many as 20-30 times before you can finally land on some "solid" ground with some of those maps. I think that is more than just frustrating, so I created this mod to help those people who use those kind of maps.
There is also a sinister bug that impacts almost everybody else though, and it is something that should have been caught a while back. See down in the technical details below for further information.
== Installation ==
There is only one class that you need to install, but that needs to be put into your "minecraft.jar" file. If you have installed other mods this should be something of an old hat. Please consult other threads about how to install mods if you can't figure it out. I'm throwing the class file into a zip file strictly for consistency with other mod installation guides.
FallFix for 1.6.2: http://adf.ly/RiCKG
Earlier versions:
Fall Fix for 1.6.1: http://adf.ly/RgCzx
FallFix for 1.5.2: http://adf.ly/RgCbi
FallFix for 1.3.2: http://dl.dropbox.co...llFix_1_3_2.zip
FallFix for 1.3.1: http://dl.dropbox.co...llFix_1_3_1.zip
The only mods this may cause some incompatibility with are those which modify this class. To the best of my knowledge, neither ModLoader nor Forge should have problems with this class changing and should be compatible with almost all mods which use those libraries. If there is a mod conflict, please make a comment and let me know what problems are encountered.
Remember, if you haven't already done this for other mods, please remove the "META-INF" folder in the "minecraft.jar" file... otherwise the game will crash and become unplayable. This folder must be either recalculated (which is done by some installation programs) or removed for almost any mod to Minecraft, and this mod is no different.
== Obligatory Picture ==
This really doesn't change anything visually in the game, in fact it just removes code from the game. None the less, to keep trolls from commenting on this thread and to oblige by forum rules, here is the pic of a world using this mod:
== Technical Details ==
The problem that happens here is with the constructor for the "EntityPlayerMP" class in Minecraft (obfuscated as gt for version 1.3.1 and gu for 1.3.2). The sourcecode can be seen as follows:
public gu(MinecraftServer paramMinecraftServer, up paramup, String paramString, gv paramgv) { super(paramup); paramgv.b = this; this.c = paramgv; this.cm = paramMinecraftServer.ab().o(); j localj = paramup.E(); int k = localj.a; int m = localj.c; int n = localj.b; if ((!paramup.w.e) && (paramup.H().q() != uy.d)) { k += this.Z.nextInt(20) - 10; n = paramup.h(k, m); m += this.Z.nextInt(20) - 10; } b(k + 0.5D, n, m + 0.5D, 0.0F, 0.0F); this.b = paramMinecraftServer; this.W = 0.0F; this.bJ = paramString; this.M = 0.0F; }
The Deobfuscated code (thanks to the guys making the Minecraft Coder Pack [MCP]):
public EntityPlayerMP(MinecraftServer par1MinecraftServer, World par2World, String par3Str, ItemInWorldManager par4ItemInWorldManager) { super(par2World); par4ItemInWorldManager.field_73090_b = this; this.theItemInWorldManager = par4ItemInWorldManager; this.renderDistance = par1MinecraftServer.getConfigurationManager().getViewDistance(); ChunkCoordinates var5 = par2World.getSpawnPoint(); int xpos = var5.posX; int zpos = var5.posZ; int ypos = var5.posY; if (!par2World.provider.hasNoSky && par2World.getWorldInfo().getGameType() != EnumGameType.ADVENTURE) { xpos += this.rand.nextInt(20) - 10; ypos = par2World.getTopSolidOrLiquidBlock(xpos, zpos); zpos += this.rand.nextInt(20) - 10; } this.setLocationAndAngles((double)xpos + 0.5D, (double)ypos, (double)zpos + 0.5D, 0.0F, 0.0F); this.mcServer = par1MinecraftServer; this.stepHeight = 0.0F; this.username = par3Str; this.yOffset = 0.0F; }
The real kicker is the "fuzz" area in the middle of this constructor:
if (!par2World.provider.hasNoSky && par2World.getWorldInfo().getGameType() != EnumGameType.ADVENTURE) { xpos += this.rand.nextInt(20) - 10; ypos = par2World.getTopSolidOrLiquidBlock(xpos, zpos); zpos += this.rand.nextInt(20) - 10; }
Note that the world terrain generators have already selected a spawn location that is appropriate for the world map which has been generated, or perhaps somebody set the spawn location with MCEdit on a custom map made with that tool. Minecraft is saying essentially that it knows better where players should be spawning and moves the location around again.
Also, look at that code again. Note that the y position is being changed based upon the x & z position on the map, and then the z position is set again. Special thanks needs to be given to KeyBounce pointing this bug out on the MC Wiki. Even if you aren't concerned about some silly map maker like Noobcrew, this still will cause harm to many players causing them to be killed by spawning inside of a hillside or inside of a tree if the land is sloped along the z-axis. Basically it would cause some players to immediately die with a hardcore version of the map or world and be locked out of the world without doing a single thing.
If I was involved with the Mojang dev team, I'd likely make this change:
if (!par2World.provider.hasNoSky && par2World.getWorldInfo().getGameType() != EnumGameType.ADVENTURE) { xpos += rand.nextInt(minecraft.spawnFuzz*2) - minecraft.spawnFuzz; zpos += rand.nextInt(minecraft.spawnFuzz*2) - minecraft.spawnFuzz; ypos = par2World.getTopSolidOrLiquidBlock(xpos, zpos); }
where the "spawnFuzz" field would be something read from a configuration file and set by default to 10 with server installations and set to 0 for "single player" clients. Instead, with this "mod", I just culled the code completely but I'll admit there is a legitimate reason for having this in the game... just that it should be something more under the control of server operators or a player on single player worlds.
== From about 1.5.x onward ==
There have been some changes that more or less updated the issue. The code inside of the above routine mentioned has been changed to the following:
if (!par2World.provider.hasNoSky && par2World.getWorldInfo().getGameType() != EnumGameType.ADVENTURE) { int var9 = Math.max(5, par1MinecraftServer.getSpawnProtectionSize() - 6); var6 += this.rand.nextInt(var9 * 2) - var9; var7 += this.rand.nextInt(var9 * 2) - var9; var8 = par2World.getTopSolidOrLiquidBlock(var6, var7); }
This "protection size" argument comes from the "server" configuration.... which is exactly what it should be doing. All is well with how this should be working except that the "protection size" parameter is a bit interesting and has the following code in the MinecraftServer class:
public int getSpawnProtectionSize() { return 16; }
So close.... yet not quite done. I would definitely consider this to be a bug or at least an unimplemented feature by having a "magic number" constant. I have to assume Mojang plans on either reading this constant from a configuration file or from the argument strings as something settable by server operators or players.

SparcMan posted a message on [1.5.2][Forge]Sparcs Tweaks (rev 12) Better dungeon loot and more!Sparcs Tweaks (rev 12) for Minecraft 1.5.2 by SparcMan (updated 6/12/13)Posted in: Minecraft Mods
Are you tired of boring dungeons with even more boring loot?
Do you want more variety in mineshaft and stronghold loot?
Do you wish sometimes you'd get something useful from digging through mounds and mounds of dirt?
Do you wish a chance to recover some of that glass you placed?
Do you want to be able to put torches on the back of stairs?
If the answer to any of these questions was "yes" then SparcsTweaks is the Mod for you.
This is a minimalist mod that only tweaks a few key features of the game to make it a bit more rewarding and exciting.

Forge API compatible version for 1.5.2:
I created this version because I want to use my mod along with other mods that use the Forge API.
You MUST install Forge before installing SparcsTweaks if you want it to work right. If you're using an automated modding tool like Magic Launcher, Sparcs Tweaks must be somewhere underneath Forge in the load order.
Download the Forge API version here:

For builds of Forge newer than 684, you'll probably need Update 1:

Sparcs Tweaks rev 9a for Minecraft 1.4.5 with Forge
Sparcs Tweaks rev 9 for Minecraft 1.4.4 with Forge
Sparcs Tweaks rev 8 for Minecraft 1.4.2 with Forge
The patch is no longer used in Rev 7u1, but you must use Forge 4.2.x or higher.
Sparcs Tweaks rev 7 Update 1 for Minecraft 1.3.2 with Forge
Sparcs Tweaks rev 7 for Minecraft 1.3.2 with Forge
Sparcs Tweaks rev5 for Minecraft 1.2.5 with Forge
There is a conflict with more recent versions of forge, I recommend removing the sapling tweak (uf.class) to resolve it. (if you see trees where the leaves overwrite where wood blocks should be, that's what's causing it)
Be sure you use the version which matches the forge version you're using.
You must use one of these patches with the R5 and R7 Forge versions of Sparcs Tweaks!

- To install, locate your minecraft.jar file.
- It should be at %AppData%\.minecraft\bin (for all Windows users)
- Tip: You can go to Start -&--#62; Run and type in %AppData%\.minecraft\bin to jump straight to this folder
- You should probably copy this file elsewhere in case you want to go back to the original
- Rename the file to add a ".zip" to the end (you may have to change your folder settings to unhide file extensions)
- Open the file in WinZip or whatever compressed utility you use
- Add the class files from this archive to the opened minecraft file (drag and drop usually works)
- The files MANIFEST.MF, MOJANG_C.DSA and MOJANG_C.SF (in the META-INF folder) must be deleted!
- Close the file, saving changes if needed.
- Rename the file back to minecraft.jar and run Minecraft to enjoy the mod!

FAQ:
- Q: I found a dungeon but it just had the normal old loot.
- A: If you're playing on a map you started before installing the mod, any dungeons already generated will not be updated - travel to a new area for new loot or start a new map. Also, you may just be unlucky and the dungeon generated just happened to contain only original loot items.
- Q: Can I use this mod with others?
- A: If you load this mod before any other mods, it should remove any compatility issues but conflicting features of this mod will be missing.
- Q: Will this mod work with ModLoader?
- A: I tested it with ModLoader and there are no direct conflicts. It may still conflict with specific mods.
- Q: The game crashes when I try to cook something in a furnace and I can't load that world anymore
- A: You're probably using the standalone version of the mod with Forge installed. Use the Forge version instead.
- Q: I installed this mod and Minecraft just blackscreened right away.
- A: Either another mod is conflicting or you didn't remove the files MANIFEST.MF, MOJANG_C.DSA and MOJANG_C.SF which are in the META-INF folder of the minecraft.jar

I'm only using ML, Optifine and More Pistons, and according to Magic Launcher, there should be no conflicts.
The crash log is in the spoiler. Oh, and your Save Portal mod seems interesting. I remember the old Teleport Signs back on the days.
