I think this is because all the sounds are now controlled by the server, meaning if you don't have a PERFECT ( as in direct ) connection to the server, you will experience this issue. You would think Mojang would see this issue before they implemented it -.-
All Items are slightly better than diamond tools, armor, and weapons. As for the ore, it's hard to judge, but from what I have noticed through testing is it's slightly more common than diamond, although they often come in smaller veins than iron or coal. So, that said, the Obsidian Stick Ore is slightly rarer than gold and Fire Gem Ores are slightly rarer than that. Again, it is hard to determine rarity, this is just my estimate.
Looks nice. Will test out. However you might consider changing "Obsidian stick ore" to something else. It sounds a bit off.
Maybe "Obsidian shards" or "Obsidian rock ore".

I know that may not be a good starting point, but hey, might as well be honest.
Being my first mod, I'm not exactly sure what it is the community would like from my mod, that is, if they even do. But, being a Minecraft player myself, I think I have a fairly good idea on what you guys would want from a mod such as this one. Enough background, let's get to the mod!
Fire Gems has been a project of mine for awhile now. Only recently has it become a reality however, as I am finally learning Java. It's a mod that brings in new tools and armor into the game. (Only one set at the moment.) Being this is the first release of this mod, it does not contain much, but it is a start. It brings in two new ores as of now.

Obsidian Stick Ore
This somewhat rare ore is smelted to create Obsidian Sticks which in-turn are used to create Fire Gem Tools and Armor.
Fire Gem Ore
This twice as rare ore's drop can be used to craft Stable Fire Gems which in-turn can be used to craft Fire Armor, Fire Tools, and Fire Weapons.

its possible that your DNS records for session.minecraft.net have not been updated yet, you could try going into command prompt and typing "/ipconfig /flushdns" and then see if that fixed the connection issue

P.S. There isn't supposed to be a "/" infront of the "ipconfig", just the "flushdns".
2. How long have you played Minecraft?: Since the day before beta release... So alpha
3. Have you ever been banned from a server?: Nope! Well, this may sound somewhat suspicious but I have been banned from a raw IP server. Although, I have noticed a large amount of other players have been banned from this server with the same ban message. As far as I can tell this is simply a spam-bot esque server to decrease players' McBans Rep.
4. What type of gameplay do you like most?: I've been looking for vanilla survival but since I am a fairly skilled builder and redstone electriction I sometimes enjoy creative.
