posted a message on 1.3 Nostalgia Server

I generally find nostalgia to be a rather deceptive thing as we tend to reminisce about the past with rose glasses on. When you do get a chance to go back to the old stuff, at first it is: oh the glory days! Then it is: oh it is lacking this feature I am really used to... and that one... this sucks.... followed by: how could I ever stand to play this dinosaur, I am out of here!

The absolutely necessary key ingredient to old glory days is the old you: about to experience it for the first time. And that aint coming back no matter which version you try running.

    Quote from PlatinumHydra»

Typing in your preset each time you make a new world can get tedious very quickly. You can copy your preset to a text file and paste it when needed, but it is still somewhat slow to do.

Just how OFTEN do you create new worlds? You make it sound like you are doing it every 5 minutes or so. Also, I would think most people create a new world cause they wish to try different world features.

posted a message on Ender Pearl Gathering

I built an open style mob grinder way above an ocean, connected via nether gate. I spaced 10 platforms 3 apart so endermen spawn there too. Of course system uses water to flush, and they TP away from it. However, I made it so that almost everywhere is either covered in water or only has space 2 blocks tall. Pretty much only place for them to go to is my grinder's kill chamber. I do use a looting 3 sword to kill mobs. Pearls accumulate at roughly 4-5 stacks/hour.

posted a message on How are your things spaced out?

Some things, position is dictated by game rules. Ie. Mob grinder way up and out above ocean. Surface slime farm in nearby swamp. Village/iron farm far enough to prevent zombie sieges and potentially registering extraneous doors. But all sorts of farms that operate on their own are spaced close together so they all run while I am in area doing stuff.

posted a message on Nether Progression

Reaching nether is trivial. All you need is a bucket and a bit of lava. And yeah, flint&steel.

I am wondering just how many people melee in Nether. Biggest threats are airborne and bows come in a single flavor.

Gold? Anyone who is into rail systems uses it like crazy. Breeding horses also takes gold. Heck, if gold has little value for you, build beacon pyramid from it.

If Nether 3 cuts power only by 5%, people will generally not bother with adamantium. Having to carry an extra set of tools armor? Eek, inventory space is premium. And keeping the stuff in chest by portal, switching each time will getvtedious quickly.

posted a message on Useful/Must have things for your home-base on survival?

I rarely bother with a central "base" unless that is what someone can loosely call a collection of facilities I usually set up.

Mob grinder: usually way out high above an ocean. Connected via nether hub. Enchanting table and anvil also set up there.

Village: square building around a 19x19 iron farm in center, around 100 doors, and surrounded by crop fields. Well fenced and lit. A railway with gates leads to a trading hall where more valuable villagers are sent. I might also build an extra iron farm pod or two 75 and 150 blocks above.

Auto farms for cane, melons, pumpkins. Wheat/carrot/potato farm.

    Chicken cooker.

    Cow crusher.

    High volume autosmelter.

Nether hub leading to various useful/interesting places.

The original base per se usually ends up being a long term storage facility.

posted a message on Java MC will not start on a laptop.

Ok, it is a 64-bit OS, and Java is also 64-bit. Under profile settings, I tried both using bundled Java runtime and the one independently installed. (jre1.8.0.171)

As to what changed: laptop had a bit of a maleare problem and I needed to do some heavy cleaning, but fairly sure MC stopped working before that. It was set to just load the latest, and did work at least till 1.12, but a I tried all versions from 1.8 to 1.12 just in case.

I wonder if there is a more detailed problem report available (core dump?) other than that tiny file under .minecraft/logs. It looks like the game does not crash but rather hangs waiting for something until it finally times out.

    Thanks.

posted a message on I want VR!!

If you have Oculus Rift or Vive or about any headset supported by Steam, you can play Java Minecraft on SteamVR using Vivecraft.(http://www.vivecraft.org) Takes a bit of control tweaking to set things to your liking. And MC Bedrock(Win10) is natively available on Oculus Rift (likely Vive too) and is real polished right out of the box.

    MCVR is quite an experience.

Frankly, if MC came with a pdf of "Basic Handbook" (with a link to it in-game) and maybe a video for those too lazy to read, it would be enough.

posted a message on Java MC will not start on a laptop.

It is a fairly new laptop, and it came with Win10 originally instaled. In fact, it runs Win10 (Bedrock) MC just fine.

It ran Java MC at least up to 12.2. I will need to double-check the OS/Java bit version tonight.

The new username will be for Java only, and it will be the username he will be playing under if he goes to any Java MC server. It will not affect in any shape or form his Win10/Xbox/Realms account/username.

Of note: with Java MC purchase, there will also come a free copy of Win10 MC (bedrock). This can be actually given away to some other family member/friend. When you click the link to redeem it from his account on minecraft.net, it will prompt to enter a Microsoft/Xbox account credentials. You can enter whatever account you wish.

With Java MC, your son can go onto various publuc servers and play there with any other friends who also have Java MC. Or, if he has a friend over, and you got an extra PC, they can play Java MC together via LAN. Another rather advanced option is he can download, setup and run an MC server. (I.e. CraftBukkit). It takes some network savvy making that server externally visible, but it would enable them to share a world where they can run whatever mods, skins and texture packs they want - all for free.

"PC version" is a misleading term. "Java version" is more appropriate. Win10 edition is also a "PC version".

I think the biggest hurdle to official interoperability support is that Java version is essentially open source and extremely moddable. This makes it sort of a wild west territory where servers have to fend for themselves in terms of dealing with cheat-modded clients.

The Realms is a far more protected environment, and keeping it so while allowing Java clients would be very hard.

posted a message on Java MC will not start on a laptop.

I wonder if anyone has run across something similar. I am fairly computer savvy, but I am at my wits end.

My daughter has a Toshiba Satellite laptop. It has Intel 5500 graphics and runs Win10 It USED to run Java Minecraft just fine. But now, once you select a profile, it shows Mojang splash screen and just gets stuck there. After a while, it goes into "Not Responding" state and if you close it, it says "Java(TM) Platform SE Binary is not responding." Her Java MC account works fine on other PCs. I tried disabling the security (Norton 360), no effect. I tried rolling graphics drivers back to older version - also no go.

I looked at logs under .minecraft, and I see it has:

    [18:25:22] [Client thread/INFO]: LWJGL Version: 2.9.4

[18:25:25] [Sound Library Loader/INFO]: Starting up SoundSystem...

    [18:25:26] [Thread-9/INFO]: Initializing LWJGL OpenAL
[18:25:26] [Thread-9/INFO]: (The LWJGL binding of OpenAL. For more information, see http://www.lwjgl.org)

    [18:25:26] [Thread-9/INFO]: OpenAL initialized.

And this is it. Looking at the log on a PC where MC works fine, the following line is supposed to be:
[11:48:26] [Sound Library Loader/INFO]: Sound engine started

But that never seems to come up.

I tried using both the bundled java and installing Java environment and pointing to that... again no effect.

A complete delete and reinstall of MC also had no effect. If anyone has any suggestions, I appreciate any help! Thanks.
