Over the past few months, several of my friends here at university have been playing quite a bit of minecraft connected to a server I host on my personal desktop. However, we've experienced strangely high amounts of lag and stuttering.
I've only been running the standard vanilla server .jar on my desktop from the command line to dump extra 8GB extra RAM into the process. My PC currently has a higher end AMD gpu, High end i7 processor, and 16GB ram. I often times also play as a client from my desktop as well, and this doesn't really seem to affect the lag issues for my other users positively or negatively. All of the friends I play with are on the same network here. We each consistently get approximately 20MB/s download speed, and very high upload speeds as well, although I can't remember an exact figure. The network here is rated as one of the highest in the country as well, and I never dip below 10MB/s while browsing.
Before anyone asks, I don't run any other non-vital processes while the server is up. Virus protection is off, Steam and Browsers are off, etc. No music streaming either.
What gives? I'd like to improve the performance soon, and I know my PC can handle it. I'm just not sure what the problem is. I'dloveto use my PC to host a large free server for the community, but the periodic lag spikes are killing me. Keep in mind, the lag is periodic, but when it comes, it's often several seconds of crippling lag that really ruins the experience for everyone. All of my users are running optifine and get consistently good fps in their singleplayer survivals, but survival on my server tends to not hold up as well.
Why do you like Minecraft?: It's a fantastic game to just sit back and relax. I love the casual environment, and the chance to socialize and play something cooperative. I really enjoy working on longer projects.
Why do you want to join our server?: I've always played on LAN networks I set up with friends, but never played a lot of SMP. I'm looking for a chill server with good Admins and an active community. I tried non-whitelisted servers, but they were just filled with griefers; I figured I'd have better luck here. Thanks for your time.
