I live in BC and have internet with Telus, and my ports work perfectly fine. Always have.
Yup, same here. I was a total Noob regarding Port Forwarding, but after learning a few things I had no problem setting up a MC server on my Telus Router.
1.5 seems to have some performance issues. I am getting 200+ FPS and MC is still very jerky, almost like it's only getting 20ish FPS. 1.4 with Optofine and ShadersMod was far more smooth than vanilla 1.5 is right now.
System
AMD FX 8320(3.5ghz)
Radeon 5870
16 gb DDR3 RAM
This kinda reminds me of how the Nether has always been laggy/jerky.
I like the direction it has gone and continues to go. It no longer has that fresh car smell that made it extra awesome when I first started, but like with everything in Life, that's just familiarity. I don't know how old you are, but even the most awesome thing you will ever experience is going to seem less awesome in time. Sorry to destroy your Worldview.
To overcome your fear, during the Day place 1 torch down on the top of a mountain. Then climb down the mountain and walk away in a straight line until you no longer see the mountain. Place a torch at that spot.
Whilst still at the second Torch, Craft a Chest and place all your possessions into that Chest. Now wait for the Moon to reach 1/4.....run as fast as you can to the Torch on the top of the Mountain.
Sounds like a good concept. Mine is much more simple but is just as efficient;
Nice.
I usually just dig a hole in a wall 2 blocks up, 2 blocks deep, then 1 block down on the second block deep. Put lava in it and it's done. Only risk is if one digs into it.
Just keep looking. One way to make travel safer is to tunnel through mountains. Try to keep in as straight a line as possible, mark entrances/exits with cobble to make them easy to find. Also leave a trail of Torches/cobble when going distances on the surface.
I stumbled upon the Nether Fortress while out gathering Glowstone. It wasn't that far from the Gate, but was quite the chore trying to find it again as I only made a trail part of the way.
I build multiple houses in various places of interest. Each one is made with something different. My first is always in the side of a Mountain for some early game Mining.

If an Enderman is attacking you, it's your own fault.
edit: oops, apparently I have been here before.
