My initial plan for "growing" Fright Bulbs was going to be the same way one would "grow" flowers. Using bonemeal on dirt, and similarly, bonemeal on soul sand.
Admittedly Flowers are purely cosmetic, and Fright Bulbs have purpose, but it was a simple way where code could be easily cannibalized.
As a minor note, Grey and I have expanded DeadBrush (IIRC we renamed it ____ Shroud) so it has it's own "growth" ability, and a neat aesthetic effect. All due to an idea yofreke had.

And don't be fightin' over the Aether mod here guys.
They did the real hard work of creating an entirely new realm, but overall they've moved away from the source suggestion. Grey and I have talked together about trying to get King and the rest of them to maybe use different code in their mod if they determine the New Nether is installed, or perhaps giving us the base code so we could make our own version to compliment the New Nether better and follow the Suggestion more closely.
(Note, we haven't talked to KING about this yet, but this would be our plan)

Lastly... I can't stop looking at Dominus' Avatar.

Hey, I just noticed a small glitch... if a salamander is in lava, it will try to pull in ANYTHING in range. on hard, a spiked grem does 4 dmg on contact (insta break) and on normal two hits will break it (contact is maintained, after all). would the salamander commit suicide trying to snag the grem, or would it wisen up and stop attacking it?

    Hrmm... I'm not entirely sure.

I don't think the spikes will auto-detach the tongue, but that doesn't mean the Salamander will win.

The salamander will pull the grem into the lava, igniting it, causing it damage, and bring it in biting range. While at the same time, once in biting range the grem will be dealing 4 damage to the salamander.
The Grem has less health, but would deal more damage (4 compared to roughly 3.5), and it would probably try to run away once lassoed.

I'm gonna have to say that it's an interesting hypothetical. We'll probably add to the Grem that it'll run away if lassoed, and maybe give the lasso/tongue some limit so that if the mob is constantly moving back it'll break free.
In the end though, this is DEFINITELY going to be something that's going to have to be ironed out in post release.

If Notch added quicksoil he would obviously do something about the kicking.

The chunk loading wouldn't be any more of a problem than it is with minecarts currently. (This does pose a problem for the minecart tracks plus quicksoil equals faster minecarts feature, however.)

The thing is, Minecarts still know (roughly) where to go IF you enter an unloaded chunk.
You can't enforce such stuff with an omni-directional quicksoil block.

wouldn't the quicksoil kick players for walking too fast and/or make SMP servers laggier?
the faster the player move the faster the chunks have to generate

    That's...

    Actually a very valid point.

I can't really. I'd take the side of the Suggestion over the Mod, and the only reason that discussion exists is because the Modders closed their own thread so they could work without having to constantly read "WHAN DIS RELEEZ?!"

From there the mod supporters migrated to the suggestion thread and fail to realize that:
    1) The suggestion came first
    2) Saying the Mod is better is ASKING for a fight in the suggestion thread
    3) Until the Mod thread opens back up, the suggestion guys don't know any more than what's public.

I don't have the time, nor patience to post/repost/rerepost this information over and over.
    ...
Plus, isn't the Aether thread (both of them) locked now?

I felt Omega described it well enough weq.
Admittedly it will need tweaking once it's implemented but as is it's sound in not igniting the entire nether.

And remember Deadbrush kills any fire within the 27 blocks squarely surrounding it. It does not mark the blocks as inert, it will KILL the fire once it moves there.

As for the Midas Tears not flowing down, it's actually a simple REMOVAL of code to make it work.
Currently it's "If flow block "is above" air block then replace air block with full flow block"

Delete that line of code and tada, midas tears will not flow over edges.

It's a SIMPLE fix because it visually looks like it will flow over, but it will not in actuality.

Lastly, @weq, I'm not sure what I'd do for the Aether mod. I'm mainly a concept guy, loved the Aether concept, and greatly dislike the ways the mod changed the concept. If I were to help in the modding aspects I'd start changing everything to be just like the concept.

    As for the mod...
Yofreke and Gkardos will be active on the mod roughly by the end of the week.
We're waiting on Grey to finish up a sprite sheet for them to work on blocks and items. ETA on that is the end of the week.

We are STILL looking for modders who want to help. This is a particularly large task and the more experienced workers we have, the better.
For those of you active in the modding section, PLEASE add this to your signatures to help us get more visibility:

If we were going to they'd probably act the same as our Trolls do currently.
They're about the same size, and mythologically known for their strength, so really it'd just be a different skin for Trolls.

Also, we're just waiting on one thing from Grey atm.

MrDare360 and Gkardos, you're more than welcome to help.

Send me a PM so I can remember who is willing to help mod and I'll get back to you.
(I'll add this to the OP)

I've got limited time left for this post but cross your fingers for Yofreke giving us a hand. He's working on implementing the rest of Grey's ideas, he may jump in here too.

I'll be back at home roughly the 17th.

Did we mention that the mod is going to take another twist soon?

    Urgh...
I wasn't a big proponent of forcing the player to build backpacks. I hope that you're building the expanded inventory in a way such that someone can choose NOT to be limited to one row off the bat. Though I have a feeling that would be pretty difficult to section out of the rest of the backpack code.

Though I will say I'm very excited to see you working on the rest of Grey's improvements to MC. It gives me hope that I won't have to look very far for some help on the New Nether.

Family matters sprung up and I'm going to disappear for a while.

I was planning on setting up the Mod List and Topic before I originally planned to go, but that's not really an option now.
I'll have to do it when I get back.

not touching this mod. seems like too much for me

Look at the list of "releases".
You don't have to do it all at once, but instead can focus on one section at a time, making it perfect, and then moving on.

    Quote from Gkardos

Doesn't seem like a complex mod. I could help if you need. I'm assuming you don't mind the amount of main classes this will use.

Any help is appreciated. And I too used to abuse Main().
If you've made working code that has multiple mains then go for it. Otherwise I'll probably have to take a look at it and modify it so there's only one Main. :tongue.gif:

Right now, fright bulbs will only spawn upon generation, and so will rapidly run out as they are discovered and harvested. If they run out, the threat they pose is forever gone. so... perhaps soulsand has a *very* small chance of occasionally spawning a new fright bulb, keeping the threat alive without overflowing the land with explosives.

Good point, but it's essentially the same thing with flowers.

Buuuut, flowers were handled by using bonemeal manually. Now given the nature of the Nether and the item in question (bonemeal) I think it wouldn't be that big of a stretch to say that if bonemeal is used it has a chance to generate a Fright Bulb.

Granted, that means that once you've explored and removed all fright bulbs you don't have to worry about them in that part of the land.

There's a lot of stuff that needs to be updated. Especially the mod inclusion list as it's so old.

It'll be a while before I can get to those suggestions Sniggy.

Grey's been having computer troubles, and his own life so things have been basically on my shoulders only, and as such it's gonna take a lot longer.

Once I get the finalized list, I'm going to make a thread in the Mod section to be on the active look out for modders.
This thread is kinda a tertiary look out, and we need to go straight to the source.
