posted a message on Hardcore: instead of deleting world just downgrade to softcore
Regenerating the world from the same seed is easy to do already, the only hard part is that it deletes the world so if you didn't record the seed it's gone forever. If it altered the game into an unplayable state, ie. just a reference in your menu preserving the seed and custom values along with the title, then you could keep it there for posterity, re-create the world from it, or just delete it.

Cheats don't need to be in hardcore for what I was suggesting. The player could be transited to spectator mode and then be presented with a button to continue in softcore should they choose. The spectator mode gives them the opportunity to show off what they accomplished while having the F3 menu still say they are in hardcore.

Furthermore, I was suggesting having both options available to a player when creating a world. For instance:
Option 1.) hardcore mode: when you die, you go to spectator mode and world can't be played again
Option 2.) hardcore-: when you die, you go to spectator mode but can switch to regular survival

I think it'd be nice if when making a hardcore world, you could have the option to set it so that when you die, it will just downgrade to a softcore world. There could be a hardcore indicator in the F3 menu so you can prove to your friends when you did something on hardcore without dying, but it would open up hardcore mode to more players. Some of us are skilled enough to get pretty far on a hardcore world but simply don't want to lose everything from one death. With this setting, the only loss would be that everything would no longer be in hardcore mode for bragging rights.

Perhaps to go a step further, when you die the first time, it could put you in spectator mode and still count you as being in hardcore until you change back to regular survival mode. Furthermore, the option to go back into hardcore mode would be disabled since you have one death already recorded in hardcore.

posted a message on 1.8 island seed with tons of horses (but supposedly no dungeons!)
You can switch to creative in your main game by typing /gamemode 1

Gamemode 0 = survival (you have health and hunger)
Gamemode 1 = creative (you can walk or fly, break blocks instantly)
    Gamemode 2 = survival hardcore?? (I think)
Gamemode 3 = spectator mode (you can pass through blocks, always in fly mode, can't break blocks, others can't see you)

Here's my seed (minecraft version 1.8):

    http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-discussion/seeds/2349278-1-8-island-seed-with-tons-of-horses-but-supposedly
    This uses no custom settings.
Some of the stuff I like not listed there:

-Desert temple spawning at the border of a mesa or jungle
-A juncture point where lots of interesting biomes are in proximity.

Alright, I got you something I think you'll like! Go to -5925 x +6235 and have a look around.

There aren't any horses in the immediate area, so I took the liberty of finding the nearest horses. There's two of them, not too far off at -6800 x +6600.

posted a message on Find me a surprise on my seed!
I just got back from a LONG trip through the Nether. I went all the way to 155 x 2655 to make a portal. I've never gone nearly that far through the nether before. I encountered two nether fortresses along the way and drove my path right through them, collecting some iron and diamonds along the way. I brought 8 stacks of cobblestone with me and it was barely enough!

I came through that nether portal and was really delighted at what I saw coming out! You found me a savannah hills M right next to cold taiga! I've found a small floating island and will build it into a cozy home later. Here's some pictures:

The view looking down from my soon-to-be house:

Here, a sheep came to greet me as I took a screenshot from below the house:

There are lots of sheep right next to the portal and all around, and also a few cows, so it won't be hard to get a food farm going. It's a long trip back through the Nether. Even though it's marked, I don't think I'll be heading back right away! XD

I'll give your seed a go and see what I can find for you!
P.S. that was a fun trip. I'm glad you picked something far away. My diamond tools will need repairing soon, so it's good that I have all this diamond and iron I found along the way!

    Here's my seed: 1599027602

I have built some things on here already. What I want is for you guys to pull up AMIDST or load the seed, and go searching for something odd or interesting in my seed, and don't tell me what it is but only tell me where it is. I will then embark on a journey to go find it! Try to find something anywhere from 1000 to 100,000 blocks away!

You can give me vague hints about what it is but don't spoil the surprise! If you're not sure what to look for, here's a few things I'm interested in finding:
    * Medium islands really far from shore
    * medium or larger floating island far from ground or mountain
    * a crossroads where several interesting or rare biomes meet
    * a hot biome bordering a cold biome
    * a large amount of terrain lacking cave systems, with only small bits of caves if any
    * a mountain with an above-cloud area that has cool stuff on it
    * a cave or ravine intersecting a stronghold, or some other chopped structure due to cutting by terrain features
    * a large patch of clay, many stacks worth of clay blocks
    * a really large ocean area with no islands
    * a really large lava ocean in the nether with no land in sight
    * a nether area with excellent capacity to travel, as opposed to the normal running into walls and lava
    * a desert temple next to a jungle temple, or other rare structure arrangement (desert temple next to NPC village isn't rare, sorry!)
    * a loot chest containing wood, obsidian, chain armor, a sapling that can't be obtained from the nearby biomes, or other uncommon and esoteric items in loot chest
    * a zombie, skeleton, and spider spawner all within a short distance of each other

Some not-so-rare things that I'm also a bit interested in:
    * two NPC villages near each other
    * two or more ravines joining to make an extra-long ravine
    * a very large jungle-covered area lacking hills and ravines
    * a very large mesa area with interesting hills and terrain features
    * a very large mega taiga area bordering lots of other biome types
    * a very large tundra (cold taiga) area with varying types of taiga and ice biomes and features
    * a very large flat area for good horse travel, without a lot of ravines
    * a cave system with many caverns and/or lacking in chopped terrain or caves crossing over one another in a messy manner

Find me something, then post your home seed here (and you custom settings) and let me find you a surprise! Also give me your preferred travel distance, and feel free to list kinds of things you hope me to find for you!

posted a message on What's the story of your username?
I played the Soul Reaver demo and it alerted me that Reaver isn't just a Starcraft term, so I looked it up and I found the definition interesting. I crafted my name The Reaver of Darkness originally just to sound cool and give a shout-out to the lovely Raziel who is a reaver that lurks in darkness, but then I realized it can be used as a clever moniker for a light-bringer. Thus, I am the spreader of knowledge, the reaver of darkness. And that's how it's been ever since then, this name I have used online in one variation or another (mostly altered due to space limitations) since the late '90s.

I drew my Minecraft avatar, seen in the image to the left, and I rather like what I came out with, even though my Reaver of Darkness character doesn't have a true appearance decided yet.

posted a message on How close to a spawner do you have to be for a spawner to spawn a mob?
I could be wrong about some of that, but I know it's by center of the spawner. I was in the center of the 16th block away when it stopped spinning, and I went back and forth several times to confirm.

posted a message on What is your dumbest death ever?
I dug a deep staircase mine with stone picks and encountered several new ores I'd never seen before, a yellow one, a blue one, and a red one. They were breaking really slow so I wasn't sure if something was wrong, so I worked my stone pick on the lapis lazuli first because that one would be least valuable if I screwed up somehow.

That's how I destroyed the first diamonds I ever found.

The distance is exactly 16 meters (taxicab distance) from the center of the base of the spawner. You can see when you are close enough by watching the small model inside the cage. It will not spin when you are out of range.

posted a message on Minecraft Noob Test!
Several of the questions don't have good answers, also my knowledge of mod packs has nothing to do with my (vanilla) experience.

Worst question: which block doesn't spawn naturally?
1.) iron door - not a true block, does spawn naturally
2.) trapped chest - no such thing as a trapped chest item, but you can trap a chest, not a true block, does spawn naturally
    3.) cobblestone - spawns naturally
4.) redstone dust - not a block at all, does spawn naturally

So pattern here? Everything listed does spawn naturally. Three of them aren't blocks. Which, therefore, am I to answer, so that the almighty noob creator of the test agrees with me?

You could give everyone limited protection, with the option to pay money to have more protection. It makes sense: that protection and the land within it costs space on your server.

Another possibility would be to sell obsidian in microtransactions. It's not a particularly rare block but people can get tired of mining it and might want a faster method. It's a lot easier to enjoy an obsidian house when you can spend more time building it than you do gathering the blocks.

Out of the multiplayer servers I played on, my favorite was Shadowblade: players could buy things for in-game currency at an admin shop and they could pay real money for in-game currency. That's not why I liked it, but it was one of the many cool features. Not everything was available at the admin shop, notably absent was enchanted items.

posted a message on Tools break blocks at speeds very different from the listed value
Yeah well I don't know who thought it would be a good idea to add that pause but it'd be nice to be rid of it. Sometimes I do want to mine a bit slower, so for that I can use a tool with a lower efficiency rating. But it's frustrating when I upgrade the efficiency of the tool and it does nothing! Or it jumps up an absurdly high amount. There's no in-between. I either mine faster than I ever wanted to, or I mine slower. Creative mode has a good speed, but you can't get a tool that goes that speed in survival. Probably because in creative it's 0.25s pause, and in survival you can't have a 0.25s pause without a tool that takes at least 0.1s to break the block.

I'm sure many of you have noticed this, but as you upgrade your tools, you eventually seem to be pushing up against a wall, as upgrades start giving less and less of an increase in speed. Once you get into diamond tools enchanted with efficiency, sometimes the increase isn't even noticeable--that is, until you break some limit and suddenly you can demolish vast numbers of blocks extremely rapidly.

Notable examples of this phenomenon are with sand, dirt, and gravel with shovels, and sandstone or netherrack with picks. Even iron tools can break about 2 of these blocks per second depending on the specific material, while a diamond tool enchanted with efficiency one level below what is needed to speed-break blocks will still max out at about 3 blocks per second. But you pop over the limit and suddenly the tool can break about 20 blocks per second. That's about a 600% increase in breaking speed!

Here's my chart of estimated block-breaking speeds per tool and block (based on the number of blocks I am able to break per second), compared to what we have on the wiki:

    Sandstone
    Diamond pick - wiki: 0.15 - actual: 0.4
    Diamond pick w/ Eff. I - actual: 0.4
Diamond pick w/ Eff. II - actual: 0.35
Diamond pick w/ Eff. III - actual: 0.35
Diamond pick w/ Eff. IV - actual: 0.05

    Dirt and Sand
    Diamond shovel - wiki: 0.0938 - actual: 0.35
    Diamond shovel w/ Eff. I - actual: 0.35
Diamond shovel w/ Eff. II - actual: 0.05

    Grass and Gravel
    Diamond shovel - wiki: 0.15 - actual: 0.4
    Diamond shovel w/ Eff. I - actual: 0.4
Diamond shovel w/ Eff. II - actual: 0.35
Diamond shovel w/ Eff. III - actual: 0.35
Diamond shovel w/ Eff. IV - actual: 0.05

Am I the only one who is bothered by this?

It just wouldn't seem very realistic if it spawned on the ground, and I don't see how it spawning in trees could be successfully implemented.

chance to spawn in an air block directly above a despawnable leaf block?
