I watched the videos and none of them talked about protecting your spawn point. They all built away from it and would have to run for cover if they died.
Videos are nice. Written guides are nicer. I am used to written guides and can print them off and read the pertinent data later. I still haven't figured out how to print off a video.
First
mark your spawn point. This is done easily (usually) by digging out the spaces around where you started. Don't dig down more then one space though. If you dig to far right beneath your spawn point it may change where you spawn.
Second
collect two trees worth of wood.
As soon as you can make a workbench. Then a axe and mining pick.
Find some coal. You need to get at least one piece before nightfall. Make torches.
(torches are not necessary. You will feel a lot safer though with them. Monster won't spawn within 24 blocks of the player. So as long as you stay to a small house at first you should be fine.[thanks Luke_Mann for pointing this out])
Third
Make a fortress around your spawnpoint if possible. It needs to be at lest a 5*5 square. With walls 3 squares off the outside ground. No roof , climb in using sand or dirt squares. Then destroy the squares afterward , so the enemy won't climb them too.
Make steps to the wall of you fortress , on two sides. So that if there is a creeper you can exit using the opposite side. Don't attack , or be attacked , by creepers until you are away from your base.
Make a chest to store your stuff. Hopefully you have enough wood for this. Make a full set of tools as well.
by this time you are past your first night and surviving.
Fourth
Gather coal , wood , sand. Enough to build a glass wall around your spawn point. At least 11 squares on each side. Fill in the corners too. Enemies can attack from adjoining squares. Even through a wall. Build it 3 squares high. Put a door on two different sides. Don't get to close to the doors if there is a creeper on the other side. They will blow up and take out the door and surrounding walls and more.
Make a 3squares wide * 2squares high wall in front of each door. Leave enough space though to go through the door. This will keep skeleton archers from sniping you through the door. (just happened to me.)
Notes:
don't forget to put torches all around your spawn point. to keep enemies from spawning. They won't spawn on lighted squares.
Permanently mark your spawn point with a crafting block or brick block , or whatever block you use the least. This will make it easier to find and keep you from messing it up.
This is what I do every time I start a new game. I thought I would note it down. Maybe someone else will find it of use.
Wall off any natural cave you find and mark it for later exploration. Especially when mining. Exploring caves and mining do not mix. (for me at least.)
dispute the charges if you need to. Otherwise , wait it out. It can take a month or more for it to go through from what I have read. Don't wait to long though , that you can't get your money back. If that is a possibility.
Ummm , maybe try turning it to some setting that lets the game decide , or turn off any settings that might be similar in the game. Be worth a try , maybe.
Those control panels for graphics cards cause havoc with some games.

try and keep anything interesting in a note file. I just forget to note who says it. So this isn't by me. Thanks
A forum section where those new to the game can go and ask stupid questions or state obvious things.
I have been wanting to ask question or make statements that don't belong in any of the forums sections.
What do you do with chicken eggs? - may belong in the support section. Always thought that was more for tech though.
I made this cool lavafall. - might belong in singleplayer discussion. except it is something newbies do.

Would also be a good place to put the links to the different guides and sites available for perusal. So the those that want to learn more have a good spot to learn more.
Want to post something and can't really figure out what to post. So let the begging commence.
Upon bended knee I do request of you , no plead of you , that you purchase this game for me.
My sad story , well , kinda:
My brother is going through withdraws. The med he is on wasn't able to be filled by the pharmacist do to some clerical error or another. He has the shakes right now and hot and cold flashes. He spends most his time abed.
This game though pleases him very much. Just playing the test version wasn't enough. He , like I , wishes to play the Alpha.
Please , Please , to help out my little brother.......
Edit:
Bought the game after a very harrowing journey. My brother has enjoyed playing it very much. We have been sharing the install that is on my computer.

I don't know why it takes forever for some and is instantaneous for others. Also try here , somewhere ( not a direct link):

be careful about pressing the submit button over and over again. It may cause spam.

On the wiki it is www.minecraft.net
On the forum it is minecraft.net
Are both forms correct. I notice that I am only logged in when I go to one of the site , not the other though.
