Can I still squeeze in a sword?

Not made for Minecraft, but I was inspired by this thread.

This is slightly off topic though I have a request that I would appreciate a response to:

To all artists who work in a pixel art style,
I am working on a major Research Project for school and I have chosen the topic of learning pixel art then producing a tutorial on it. I need some primary sources for the development of this project. I thought this would a good place to find people with developed knowledge and skills and I would appreciate it if I could Interview you by means of a pm.

The interview itself shouldn't be very time consuming, around 30 minutes to answer all questions and about 1-2 weeks until required. I will brief you about the interview, send you the questions beforehand for confirmation and negotiate how you would like to do the interview. You can maintain full anonymity in all references; I won’t even be stating that I used the Minecraft Forums for my own anonymity after the Research Project has concluded. If you are interested please send me a private message. Thank you for reading and considering my request.

I may be biased in posting these links, but I know there are many professional pixel artists on these 2 websites and I'm sure some of them would be very willing to help you.

Pixelation - Forum for pixel art critique.
PixelJoint - Gallery for pixel art. Also has a forum, but I'm less familiar with it.
I'm sure there are more, but these are the ones I know.

Huh, well. I did not know that :o
I wanted to have the stone on top and the wood on the bottom like I've seen in many packs. However its going to stay with stone on top and wood on the bottom with almost all of the GUIs. In elds he created it where it has wood alone as well.

I'm pretty sure eld's inspiration for the inventory screen and the bottom part of the rest of the guis was to make it look like a leather bag. That's why he has all the metal parts, including the clasp.

No artist is credited on the credit page, except for the guy that did the paintings.
And based on what the texture look like, there are only a few that look like they might have been created by an artist.

I know up to the time that he hired poeple like junkboy or jeb, Notch did all of the textures. After that, who knows. Notch may or may not still make all of the textures for minecraft.

Maybe the men who made the textures was fired from Mojang?
This is from when Notch was working alone on the game. Pretty sure he hasn't been fired.
Edit: Looking at the wiki, this texture was from the first version of the game. Looks like it was in the game for a full 16 days publicly!

@i_prefer_pi, I would love to see some truly atmospheric light map to emphasize the different tones to impressionism. A red/orange/purple during a sunset, blue/green/purple during night, and maybe a slight yellow in torchlight.

I'd love to see some more wild colors, like maybe throw some purple or something in the dirt and some other color in the stone. The grass captures this with the red throughout.

You should also note goats (& sheep!) have rectangular pupils, if you want it to be more realistic or
However you go about it, they look okay so far. The models aren't really made for sheep or goats.

I know, but with school during the week, I would only have this weekend to get any major work done, so i don't think I'll bother, I'm happy enough with it.

Here are my textures, but I haven't made screenshots yet.
Not really proud of a lot of these, you can probably see that they look like scribbles. I was pressured into finishing these over the weekend for the 25th.
The textures I am proud of most are probably bricks, planks, & sand, although that's not saying much. There are a couple more that are okay like stone, but if I made these into an actual texture pack, I'd probably edit or redo them. The rest I wouldn't even consider keeping. The thing I'm most proud of is actually finishing all the textures, even if they're ugly. Because of the extra time, I may edit some, but probably won't.

@everyone else. Great work by everyone so far, and I can't wait to see more come in, if people still have interest!

I've started working on another set of textures because why not. I'm now using SiikiKala's palette, although I've tweaked two of the colors. The first was the yellow used in my sand; I just desaturated it because it was blindingly bright. The other was a blueish gray; I turned the hue to more of a yellow to add an extra, more fitting color for stone and cobble.

I think I'm going to change the cobble (the stone bricks) because they look bad up close and lose the depth i was trying to achieve. I think I'll have to stick with a brick theme, though, because of the stone. I could change the stone, but I don't want to, I hate doing stone textures.
I also have already fixed the issue with the sand, btw. I love how the sand looks like a sine wave, exactly what I was going for.

Its too late to change their art for Minecraft anyway. Any overhaul of the graphics would cause quite the bother for some.
I think they said something like this when they hired their first graphic artist. A lot of the textures have become iconic for the game and making textures in a different style wouldn't work, obviously.

These textures have no excuse, though. I'm just hoping that they change these textures as it is still a snapshot. The andesite was okay to me, though.

I thought water and lava could be seen although they would always be a static image. Might have been with mcpatcher though and I can't really remember since it was several years ago now. :P

In any case, webs are an easy texture so even if they're required it ain't too draining to texture them.
I'm pretty sure with water and lava, the game generated the animated files for water and lava while running, same with fire. I'm sure mcpatcher is what allowed the custom textures, but its been so long I can't remember clearly. Web isn't a big deal, but thought I'd mention it.

    A couple of things:

    1. You don't have to do the sponge.
    2. If you need to edit the palettes by one or two colors once choose, there's no need to upload your edited version. The point of the palettes isn't to be really strict or annoying, it's to give you a set of colors to work with. If you "significantly" change the palette, please do upload it.
What about web, water & lava? Pretty sure you can't get/see web ingame legit in alpha and water and lava can't be textured. (in 16x, atleast, I think it might(?) be possible with 32x textures)

I experimented with another style of textures here:

I like the increased contrast with the black, but I think I'm going to stick with the other textures. I'll post an update on those once I get a little farther. I someone asked before, yes, I am going with full on color and squashed pixel restrictions from the C64.

Also a question about the blocks needed to be completed. Would we be required to complete sponge, spider-web, water, and lava textures? The custom water and lava wouldn't show up in alpha and I'm pretty sure sponge and the web are impossible to see without hacking into the game-files in alpha.
