    posted a message on Can't copy a pre-1.8 single-player world to a 1.8.3 server

    Hello,

I have a single-player test world that existed before 1.8, and am trying to migrate it to a server by copying the contents of the single-player save folder into the world folder of a 1.8.3 server. I've made a new 1.8.3 server, to which I can log in just fine. After I copy the save-folder contents into the world folder, the server no longer works. In the "Play Multiplayer" display of Minecraft, the server shows up but is listed as "Old" where the server strength and number of players is normally displayed. After about 13 seconds after being started, the server crashes without any notification of error.

When I try to join the server before it crashes, the game gets stuck on the "Logging in" page until the server crashes. At that point, I get the following error:

Internal Exception: Java.io.IOException: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host

I'm running a vanilla server. My minecraft has been altered slightly by MCPatcher for resource-pack reasons, but others with vanilla minecraft versions have had the same problem joining my server when troubleshooting this.

I've tried redownloading the server from minecraft.net and reinstalling the launcher. neither have made any difference.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you in advance.

The person who wrote that was making a lot of assumptions and didn't bother to test stuff properly. You did test things, and found out that what he said didn't work.

Simply put, you can't just decide you want things in a location that the game isn't expecting them to be unless you actually mod the code. That is to say, what you want to do doesn't work. It would be nice if it did, but no.

    Sorry. :(

Alvoria, I'm glad you replied. Your comments were helpful in the thread regarding removing the pumpkin texture from the pumpkin helmet (I was trying to do something similar).

It's too bad that I can't get this to work, but it's very good to know one way or the other. Thanks for the help.

posted a message on Armor Layer 2
    Hello everyone,

I'm attempting to edit the armor in my texture pack. I want to have all chest plate elements in the "layer_2.png" file, including the arms and gloves, so that the appears to fit close to the body (as the leggings do). When I paste the respective portions of the "layer_1.png" into the "layer_2.png" file, the chest plate shows up in game (as do the boots, actually) but the gloves and arms do not (I've tested, and neither does the helmet).

I have read here that this is possible, but I can't get it to work. Anyone have any advice?

    Thank you.

Which you can't even do since the food bar is full allready ^^

Exactly. So, where does this leave us? I see a few considerations:

Food Saturation: If you care most about not having to eat often and thus saving food in the long run, you should limit your options to cooked fish, cooked chicken, cooked pork, bread, and arguably mushroom stew (when you eat it twice you get really close to 20 food saturation points).

Danger Level of Environment: However, you also need to consider how low you can afford to let your hunger bar drop. When you're frequently encountering mobs, you may not have the option to wait until you only have 2, 1, or 0 drumsticks left. Instead, you'll probably want to refill after you get to 9 drumsticks so you start regenerating again. Ignoring food saturation, you'll want to eat a melon slice, a raw fish, or cookies (do these restore 1 or 2 hunger points?). When you're not around any mobs or other frequent sources of damage, you can ignore this consideration.

Ease of Procurement: If how much work you need to put into obtaining the food is important to you, steak, pork, and fish are probably out. Melon is the most automated food, especially if you set up a BUD switch to automatically harvest and deliver the melon to you while you AFK. Wheat is also very easy to farm, and with enough bonemeal you can set up farms in which you just need to stand in one place and right click over and over and over. Finally, with an egg collector you could AFK while you fill your inventory with eggs, kill the chickens laying the eggs, then replace them with the eggs you have. Alternatively, you could throw them into cooker that doesn't activate until you hit a switch, and AFK until they all grow up, then turn on the cooker.

Put all those together, and I say chicken is the best food. (1) It's easy to get. (2) When you're sitting at home, you can wait until you have only 1 drumstick left, eat 3 chickens, and you have both a full hunger bar and a full food saturation bar, (3) when you're in the caves, you can eat drumsticks pretty frequently without wasting too many hunger points (even if you're eating every time you have only 9 drumsticks, you're getting 2 hunger points and over 7 food saturation points, which, at 9.2 total points, is more than you'd get from eating a melon (3.2 total points)), and (4) you'll have plenty of leftover eggs to throw at other people on your server.

Edit: I suppose, with this logic, bread is also really good, and you'd have less waste when in caves and similar environments. It's ease of procurement is similar to chicken (assuming you don't mind replanting), and can eliminate the need for AFKing if your wheat farm is in a chunk that's loaded regularly. True, it takes more wheat to make bread than it takes chickens to make chicken, but I think the difference is negligible given how much wheat you can harvest at once. Still, I like meat.

Honestly I've never needed more than 3-4 Melons to sufficiently keep me full...

I just feel like Wheat takes FOREVER to grow, compared to a Melon... -.-
And you need 3 Wheat for Bread, whereas a Melon drops a lot of melon slices. And Melon Slices are good for not wasting food, since they only add very little hunger.

But melon has a lower food-saturation return than actual food-point (hunger) return. Thus, if you have 18 hunger points (half of the drumsticks) and zero food saturation points, eating a melon slice will give you 2 hunger points, but only 1.2 food saturation points. Because you only lose hunger points when your food saturation level is zero, you'll start losing hunger points again relatively soon. This seems to get better if you wait longer to eat, but that improvement is diminished when compared to the improvement other foods get.

If, for example, you wait until you have 2 hunger points (one drumstick), you'll need 9 melons to get to 20 food points. However, those nine melons will only give you 10.8 food saturation points. If, however, you ate three cooked chickens instead, you'd get 21.6 food saturation points, which would bring you to the full 20 food points and 20 food saturation points. With cooked steak or pork, eating just twice when you have 2 drumsticks will fill up your food saturation bar and your hunger bar. With cooked fish and bread, eating 4 times when you have 0 drumsticks. With mushroom stew, eating 3 times when you have 0 drumsticks (though this would "waste" half of the third bowl).

In order to fill your food saturation bar with melons, you'd need to eat 17 times, which would "waste" the last seven melons.

I'm not good enough at math to confirm your equation is correct. But just graphing out the X & Z coords of the locations you have given puts your B portal closer by more than the Y axis differences could account for. I have to question whether the values you have given are indeed true. Double check your numbers.

Putting that aside, I'm not clear on what you're trying to do. Your title says 'one-way portal', I'm not sure if you're referring to your intent or the result your getting. I'm not familiar with the exclusion-zone principle you refer to. Can you elaborate?

Are you trying to split the nether portal so that if you step in one side it goes to A portal and the other side goes to B portal? If so then each portal in the overworld would need to be precisely positioned in relation to the nether portal so that each half of the nether portal are closer to a different overworld portal.

    [edit]
perhaps this thread will help you:
    http://www.minecraft...ortal%20science

I find Xinhuan's posts to be fairly technical and well written.

I had a long reply typed out addressing all your questions and giving what I found to be the solution. However, my browser reloaded while I was testing new coordinates in minecraft, and I lost it all. Summary version:

The solution was that the game uses the center of the portal blocks when choosing a destination, rather than the corner (it uses the corner for the portal block from which you're departing, it seems). Because Portal A was constructed so close to the point at which it would be farther away than Portal B, this was enough to mess me up. I needed to move it one block, and it worked.

I would be happy to discuss the zone-of-exclusion principle (that's what Xinhuan called it in his post), and give you an explanation of what I was trying to do, and address all your other points if you'd like. I was actually very familiar with the Portal Science thread, but the zone of exclusion still isn't clear to me as Xinhuan presented it.

Thanks for reminding me of the Portal Science thread all the same, as it clued me in to the center-of-the-block calculation.

Maybe the portal only works from B to A? I'm no nether portal expert, it seems way too hard. But thats my best advice. Hope it helps.

    ---Q---

As far as I understand, it should choose the "incoming" portal that is closest to the "outgoing" portal.

I should also clarify that, when determining these coordinates, I am rounding down when the coordinate is negative, rounding up when the coordinate is positive, and taking Steve's height into account when determining the Y coordinates. I have triple checked the coordinates of each portal.

I'm trying to build a nethergate system whereby I can quickly travel from Portal A to my Nether Portal, and then from my Nether Portal to Portal B. I can't figure out why it's not working. I don't fully understand the exclusion-zone principle, so maybe that's my problem here. Can anyone help?

When I do the math to determine the euclidean distances between the Nether Portal and the two Overworld Portals, I get a shorter distance to Portal B. However, every time I go into the Nether Portal, I warp back to Portal A.

    Here are the coordinates (x,z,y):

Portal A Overworld Coordinates (from the portal block closest to the Nether Portal): (-1, -137, 63)
Nether Portal Nether Coordinates (from the portal block closest to both Portal A and Portal B ): (-7, -24, 52)
Nether Portal Corresponding Overworld Coordinates: (-56, -192, 52)
Portal B Overworld Coordinates (from the portal block closest to the Nether Portal): (-20, -165, 116)

    Here's my math:

    Nether Portal to Portal A:
    (-56 - -1)^2 + (-192 - -137)^2 + (52-63)^2 = A
    3025 + 3025 + 121 = A
    6171 = A

    Nether Portal to Portal B:
    (-56 - -20) + (-192 - -165)^2 + (52 – 116)^2 = B
    1296 + 729 + 4096 = B
    6121 = B

    Thanks in advance.

posted a message on [Bug] Persistent Flowing Lava Blocks
This bug has devastated my nether operations. Pillars of flowing lava can only be eliminated by placing blocks in every single block the flow occupies, from the top down. This is quite a time consuming process with a rather ugly result. However if it is not done, ghasts' terraforming soon causes the landscape to be completely covered by flowing lava that can only be removed by covering it up.

    Further insight would be great.

posted a message on wolves: how to breed?
    Quote from McAngusYoung

Jeb has talked about the possibility of adding wolf breeding. Seeing as how it isn't needed though, don't hold your breath. They are much more concerned with AI and Mod API at the moment.

Isn't needed? Now that friendly mobs only spawn once per chunk, I disagree. If you actually use pet wolves for protection or hunting, you'll eventually end up needing to replace the wolves (unless you just continuously feed your wolves anytime monsters are around, including during fights). Unless wolves spawn differently than other friendly mobs, you'll now have to go farther and farther away every time he goes through the few wolves which happened to spawn in a chunk. Therefore, the only sustainable use of wolves is to keep them at your base so far away from where monsters can spawn/wander that the wolf will never see you attack a monster or see you attacked.

I agree that allowing unchecked breeding of wolves will break them. However, some kind of limited breeding would work. Without that, I think they should spawn differently than the other friendly mobs.

    Hello all,

I have searched this topic using the search function several times and can't find the answer to my question. That having been said, I am sorry if it is obvious or has been answered several times.

I'm using MCEdit to try to change the spawn point in my server so we don't just fall into the void, but it isn't working. After I make the change the same thing keeps happening. Am I missing something? I have tried trashing the map and reinstalling it before making the change, and even trashing the entire server and reinstalling it before making the change. No matter what I do, we spawn off the island, fall into the void, die, spawn off the island, fall into the void, and die again.

Can anyone help? I am using Stable 33 MCEdit, Skyblock 2.1, and MC Beta 1.8.1.

I'm trying to change the spawn point in my server (using the Skyblock challenge map), but it isn't saving. I successfully load the level, successfully move the spawn point, and hit ctrl-s, and it seems to save. But then when we jump into the server, we keep spawning in the same spot and fall into the void. Am I missing something? I know you already have three right now, but how about a skin of one of the workers in Zeal? It's already been done privately, but I don't think they've released it: .

If that's too crazy, how bout something like that but a bit more modest and less fancy looking?
