I'm looking for a multiplayer server that is basically like the vanilla single player experience, except you might encounter other players. You start out in some random place, you build tools and try to survive, you explore, and every so often you might find somebody else or something someone else built. Whether you fight each other or grief each other's stuff is up to you.
Is there any server like that? Problem I have with MP is that every server starts everybody in the same gigantic castle where you can't build anything or do anything and they have 1000 different mods running. It's completely unlike the vanilla survival game which I think would be fun if you could encounter other people.
Good suggestions, but a lot of these are going to be difficult to apply to stuff that is carved out of the ground (e.g. tunnels, underground bases), which seem to be the biggest griefing target by far. It only takes a little bit of block deleting to flood an entire undergrond base complex.
Personally I think the griefing will go down quite a bit once the game goes pay to play.
