There are a few ways to keep track of where you are, depending on whether you want to stay full vanilla or not. In the regular game you can press F3 to view your coordinates on the map. F2 automatically takes a screenshot and saves it to your screenshots folder (it's in the same area as your .jar), so when I find a cool landmark and want to find it later I just take a screenshot with the F3 screen up so I have the view of the landmark and its coordinates saved in one image. If you want to get into mods you can also use JourneyMap, which lets you view the territory you've explored along with your location in a browser window. It's really easy to install too~
Like the above poster said, they spawn pretty much randomly. Have you tried farming wheat yet? It's really easy and once you have some wheat you can explore a little further away to find sheep. Sheep naturally follow a player who is holding wheat so you can use it to bring some sheep back home and start breeding them.
Also, when you do find sheep, use Shears to get the wool, not your hands- Sheep only drop one piece of wool when you kill them, but they usually drop more if you shear them. As long as there's grass around they can also grow their wool back after they've been sheared, so you can keep getting more wool that way.
Just got on, looks nice even though one of the first things I found was a totally destroyed building :c I'll wander around the server some more and check things out, maybe start a simple base.
One question though- when I play singleplayer I often use a client mod called JourneyMap. I like it because it helps me keep track of my location and the terrain in the world through a browser tab running from a local host, and it works far better than the in-game maps do. There is a feature that maps the lit parts of caves but I don't use it because it's kind of buggy and interferes with overworld exploring at times- and even if I did it doesn't give the locations of ores or anything like that. I don't feel that it gives me any unfair advantage, but I've decided not to use it on the server until getting the ok from an admin so it doesn't look like I'm up to any funny business
I'm currently having trouble connecting but I think it might a problem with my internet connection, not the server. We just had some severe storms in my area that temporarily wiped out my ISP so I'm currently using an unsecured network near my house that has kind of a weak signal from where I am. I'll try again when I have access to my own network

How often do you think you will play on this server? Whenever I feel like it. Realistically probably a few times a week depending on whether I'm busy.
Is it ok if before submitting my application I come onto the server to look around and see what the community's like? I'm assuming I won't be allowed to build or destroy anything if I'm not whitelisted right? It's just that I've never played a server except small ones with friends so I want to see what it's like first. My MC name is EllaBee if you want to check me for bans first.
My current favorite texture pack is SMP's Revival- I don't really like anything above 16x16 because imo as the pixel resolution increases it makes the blockiness of the game stand out in a bad way. I like Revival because it's 16x16 and also a much more aesthetically pleasing alternative to the default. It also uses different textures for all the different versions of wood planks which give a lot more options for decorating the house~
Interesting. I know of a different seed that has a village around the same size, so I might use that instead because I've been wanting to do something with that village. Nice challenge!
I'm doing the beginner challenge now to get a feel for the challenge- I've usually played on Peaceful up until now, so it's surprisingly difficult. I'm having a lot of fun though! I'm planning to do a co-op version of this challenge on LAN when 1.3 comes out; we're going to try to do as many of the race challenges as possible in one world (with roads connecting all the different cities, of course).
Are you looking for seeds or custom maps? Seeds don't just come premade with adventure features besides the normal caves/mineshafts/strongholds. Also pyramids and temples if you play the snapshots.
I found a good one- it's not /exactly/ what you're looking for, but I think it suits your criteria quite well. The seed is "spawn me in a forest please" (without quotes of course). You spawn in a nice flat area with a large forest in view (as opposed to spawning in a forest with a large flat area nearby ). There's plenty of animals nearby; I found at least one herd of each passive mob, including wolves. Problem is, the wolves spawn near some of the sheep so you'll want to try to lure the sheep away if you want to farm them. I found plenty of caves and exposed stone, along with a nice pumpkin patch. The spawn is also right next to a river and some Extreme Hills, and if you follow the river south you'll find a desert and a taiga. All in all I think this is a really nice friendly seed for Survival because of all the resources

My current house is more like a studio apartment with a basement since it has three rooms in one- a foyer next to the main entrance to the house, a bedroom, and a kitchen. Fence enclosures for sheep are always fun to have too.
