posted a message on Extreme hills SURVIVAL ISLAND! Great 1.4.7/15 seed
I have been playing this seed and found some other awesome places.

    There is a mushroom biome about 750m from the original island. X = 218; Z = -427

Right below it is a mineshaft with tons of chests, including one with two diamonds in it. X = 179; Z = -448 These coordinates are for the mineshaft entrance, which is underwater. I don't have the coords for the diamonds -- you'll find them, though. :)

    Off of the mineshaft is a skeleton dungeon. X = 255; Z = -491

This is just after playing for a few hours. I'm sure there is lots more to find!

posted a message on Why Little to NO Mobs?
I have noticed the same thing since the last update (1.4.6) on both single player and LAN. I don't play on a server much, so I can't comment on that. There are times when I'm down in a mineshaft and it's just empty of mobs, even the areas that are not yet lit up. I'm not farming any animals, so that's not affecting things. Even when it's daytime above ground there are a very low number of hostile mobs. The other thing I've noticed is that the mobs I do see seem to be weighted toward creepers. Those tend to spawn 2-3 in a dark area, whereas I might get a single skeleton or zombie, and spiders are few and far between.

Yeah, I know. But he was working on a lot of other stuff too. If just one person could be the lighting person that would be nice. :)

Those are lighting glitches. They also occur in Black Desert 2. There is no good way to avoid them, other than to downgrade to somewhere in Beta. They cause lag, the weird mis-lit places, etc.

My suggestion is to play a different map. If you really want to play Pigget Panic, you'd have to get one of the others to help you with how to MCEdit the fix. (If that's even possible.)

This is what I thought, thanks. If I walk into the areas, they do light up when it's day and mobs start to burn. I can also light the areas with torches. Unfortunately, it covers a huge area and takes a lot of torches, plus I'm getting hammered by mobs when trying to light it up. I guess I'll put this map on the back burner for now.

I love that Mojang keeps giving us great new items and mobs, but I wish they would devote one update to just fixing the lighting glitches!!

I'm trying to play Vechs' Hostile Trails, Pigget Panic, and I'm having a weird lighting issue. There are areas of the map where the "ceiling" of the map is casting a black shadow over everything, which means of course that mobs are spawning all day and all night. I don't think this is by design because it doesn't affect the whole map. I am playing 1.4.2 and I'm wondering if that's the problem. Has anyone had a similar issue? See screenshots below.

Edit: It seems to be affecting the areas that are adjacent to the bedrock walls, but is also happening on other areas of the map.

    What Nvidia card?

    Did you build this computer?

What speed RAM are you using?

I get several hundered FPS on max settings, but I have a higher end system. Still you should be able to run this like a champ, by the sound of it.

Try a reinstall of pure vanilla MC without any add ons and let us know what FPS you're getting.

Do you have any other programs running in the background?

What are your used specs while running MC (CPU, RAM, GPU)?

It sounds like there is something else going on here slowing your computer down.

I bought the computer. It's an ASUS Core i7 laptop with an NVIDIA GT560M 1 GB dedicated video card. Yes, I know it's a laptop, but I can run Photoshop and After Effects simultaneously with no problem, so I'm surprised about the MC issue.

I'm not sure about RAM speed. The RAM came with the computer, but as I said has not been an issue before. Heat is not an issue. The computer stays amazingly cool (GPU doesn't get above about 60C) and I also keep it on a laptop cooling fan at all times. I also keep the house pretty cool because I use computers for my work and have them running all the time. I've turned off anything running in the background (Dropbox, Google Drive).

I used to use a texture pack that was 32x32, but since the lagging issue I have only been using the default texture pack.

I downloaded a new Minecraft jar tonight and did some testing. I discovered that WITHOUT Optifine I can get between 50-70 FPS (straight vanilla Minecraft), but with Optifine I'm getting maybe 30 FPS. I run Optifine through Magic Launcher (as recommended by the Optifine developer) and if I run Minecraft through Magic Launcher but with Optifine turned off, I get no more than about 10 FPS. It seems like Magic Launcher is causing some issues and I will need to look into that more.

I have been using this configuration (Optifine through Magic Launcher) for months, but both programs have recently been updated and I am wondering if the updates are causing issues.

For now I will play with plain vanilla Minecraft without Optifine, and although I still experience some lagg, my frame rates are better. I still think there is something fishy with my computer. I'm going to run some scans and see if anything pops up.

    Thanks again for everyone's help.

How many cores does your computer have? I am very sure that when the merge happened it was programmed to use dual core, and obviously if your computer doesn't have dual core and you're playing a game designed to run on dual core you are going to have some lag issues. If you do have a second core, I have no ideas other than optimize your settings like people suggested, 'cause even my computer with only 3GB ram and a 1.87 Ghz processor (though it is dual core) and integrated graphics can run minecraft decently (that means AT LEAST 20 FPS with no lag spikes other than placing down loads of blocks at once) and since your computer is MUCH better than mine, you should, theoretically, get more FPS, unless you have only one core.

I have a core i7 with four cores. That should be plenty to run the game.

I did the defragging and cleaning of my hard drive, and that may have helped the tiniest bit, but it may be my imagination. The lagg issue also varies with time of day, which leads me to think that it is server related and that when the server is busier I get more lagg.

This may sound like a silly question, but you look like someone who knows what is inside his computer and how to use it (unlike most people complaining about the same problem) so... are you sure all your drivers / java are updated? Is Java well configured? Is Minecraft using the pieces of your hardware that he is supposed to?

Thanks, I do know my way around a computer -- I have built my own machines in the past -- and BTW I am a she not a he. :) I have updated Java and deleted and reinstalled it. My drivers are up to date. I have assigned NVIDIA to use my dedicated graphics for Java and MC. That said, there could be something amiss that I'm not aware of, which is why I asked for help here and so far have had some good ideas.

what setting are you playing on?

I am playing on normal render distance, fast graphics, no clouds, minimal particles, etc., etc. -- good question tho.

It's not our's or Mojang's fault that the update is working so badly for you.

I don't recall saying it was your fault.

    Yes, 8 GB. Sorry.

I will check the things you suggested and hopefully it will help. It's just frustrating that none of these issues arose until the SSP/SMP integration.

8 MB! ram? That's like so little. Computers nowdays have 2-8 GB.

Oops, that should be 8 GB. Typo on my part -- I fixed it. Thanks.

I have only been playing Minecraft for about six or seven months, but it has become my favorite game -- until recently.

Since the update that incorporated single player and multiplayer, the game has become nearly unplayable for me due to lag. Horrible, horrible lag. I am playing on an Intel Core i7 second generation chip with a dedicated NVIDIA video card and 8 GB of RAM (not 8 MB - sorry). This is not a crappy old computer. I am using Optifine to optimize settings.

Prior to single player switching to a server-based game, I got 70-80 FPS and now I'm lucky to get 25 FPS -- when I am not getting lag spikes that stop the game in its tracks.

Combat is nearly impossible. The nether is worse. I like to play adventure/hostile maps, but the lag makes this an exercise in frustration. Forget trying to play via LAN with my kids.

Who decided making single player server-based was a good idea? Yes, I know about the issues with having to fix bugs in two versions, etc., etc., but at this point I've paid for several licenses of a game that I almost don't want to play because it is no longer fun to get blown up by creepers when lag spikes prevent me from killing them.

At this point I feel I have two choices -- go back to an older version of the game before single player was combined with multiplayer, or quit playing altogether. Neither is a really great option.

I have looked in the forums for solutions and tried many of them, but it has not made a difference for me (Optifine, allocating more memory to MC, using only the vanilla game with no mods, using no texture packs, and on and on). If anyone has any sure fire ways to get this game back to a playable form, I'm all ears.

posted a message on Dynamic Lights - portable and moving lightsources
I am using Magic Launcher with ModLoader, Optifine, Timber! mod, Too Many Items, and Dynamic Lights. I followed the instructions in this thread for placing the configuration file in the .minecraft folder and for zipping the class files into a zip file and adding them in Magic Launcher. With everything running it works like a charm! The order I have them set up is:

    Internal Mods:

    ModLoader
    Too Many Items
    Dynamic Lights
    Optifine

    and External Mods:
    Timber!

I have this setup on two different computers and they are both working well with no crashing. Maybe this will help someone with their setup. :)

Edited to add: I am using MC 1.3.1, the most recent version of ModLoader, Too Many Items 1.3.1, current version of Dynamic Lights, Optifine 1.3.1_HD_U_B1, and Timber 1.3.1.
