    posted a message on 1.9 Pre-Release 4 Is Out!
    Quote from FlinchyZox

    i don't like pre releases.
don't do it, it doesn't make it as interesting. i like that feeling of waiting for all of these things. :Notch:

So don't look at them? No one is forcing you to play pre-releases and they're not slowing development down, so whats the problem? Do you just like saying "I don't like this thing I can totally avoid" ?

posted a message on 1.9 Updates: Possible Potions, Exciting Enchantments
Hmmm here's a few things I'm just guessing at but...

Enchantments come from "magic books" as notch says, but where do magic books come from? I'm guessing you can't make them, or it's at least very very hard to, but maybe you find them in the libraries of the Strongholds? It would give them a good reason to exist.

Enchantments are described as three tiered and random and, to quote notch:

How does enchanting work in Minecraft? Well, you open a magical book and pick a random spell, not quite sure knowing what it will do. MAGIC!

That sounds an awful lot like the sorts of procedural systems they have in roguelike games. Possibly what you'll have is a pool of possible effects and possible strengths of those effects, and the game will combine a few of these effects into random spells. This way the number of possible spells is practically limitless and you'll never get books with duplicates.

posted a message on Fire keep mobs at bay?
I was playing around on the server I frequent when I decided to see how fire acted now and if its nerfed spread was based more on amount of items burned on on physical distance from the source of the burn. So, I piled a few logs together in the middle of a field and lit them. It was starting to get dark but I hung around the fire and managed to keep it going by replacing the logs that burnt up with new ones. The fire lasted the entire night and, strangely, no mobs ever bothered me. Some got close, distressingly close in fact, I could see red glowing eyes and the outline of skeletons on the small hills near me, but none came for me.

Thinking this was a fluke of some kind, a strange effect of the environment, I did the same thing the next night, but in a different area. No mobs. The next night I went back to the first area, tried to stand around without a fire and was attacked rather quickly. The night after that I lit a fire and no mobs.

Do I just keep getting weirdly lucky or is this legitimately something in the game? The light should have no effect on spawning, since they don't spawn anywhere near you anyways, and they seemed to stay away even once they had already spawned. Torches don't have the same effect obviously either. Strange indeed.

posted a message on Minecraft Vs. Tarraria?
Well, this depends. First, they're not even really that similar. Minecraft is either a survival or a building game, depending on how you play it, and terraria is really more of a metroidvania style rpg with more exploration then mining. And which one you'll like more depends on who you are. It's rather obvious that if you ask in the minecraft forum, they'll tell you to get minecraft (and a few uninformed people will say that terraria is a minecraft rip off) while the people on the terraria forum will probably say to get terraria. You could say a lot of the same things about both games, ie you play for a week and then have nothing to do, but that really depends on the person too. Both have pretty strong online with available pvp, both allow you to build what you want, it's just really up to which one you find you have more fun with.

I will point out that terraria is on the verge of a major update, and when I say major I mean "adding more blocks, tools and mechanics then minecraft has ever had, all in a single update" major.

But really, they're both good games for different reasons and they aren't terribly related.

I hope this expands into huge nether ruins, with cities hanging from the ceiling and wrapped around massive pillars spanning from ceiling to floor.

I don't think you people get how much work it takes to update a mod like this. It'll most likely come out once we have a stable version of 1.8, after it's actually released that is. Either play 1.7.3 or quit complaining, there are really no other options.

Does it really take that long to create a mod that will fix the lag spikes? To my knowledge, lag spikes are caused by the game constantly saving, and that they are solved by disabling this. Thats just to my knowledge though.

I too would like at least the lag spike fix, if the creator isn't already working on it.

As per people saying that it's best to wait for an official 1.8 release before asking for a fix, that may be a bit problematic. Considering how strange the current release system is, we may never get an "official" 1.8 release; we may just continue to get patches to the pre-release until the 1.9 release. It's a bit hard to tell, but it may be best to treat these pre-releases as releases.

While I doubt it will be in this update, I'd really like to see this. It would help immensely with adventure maps and give people willing to put some effort into writing a way to expand their worlds.

I think notch needs to introduce new forms of swinging the sword. Like hold right click then left click to swing the sword sideways and do extra damage. That could spice up the combat system.

Blocking is CONFIRMED *points at newest video*. Diamond swords when right clicked, will parry attacks

I really don't get how stating my opinion on a update turned into an argument...

    The reasons for that are:

1.we've had this thread roughly a thousand times for each and every update. I remember waaaay back when the only mode was creative, people cried bloody murder when notch started infdev and limited the vertical hight in exchange for infinite expanses. It begins to wear on people's nerves, especially when the view of the presenter isn't explained. Stating "I think it will break things" and little else is seen as similar to posting "Minecraft sucks" because both are unqualified and unexplained sentiments.

    2. People's opinions differ and some people feel the need to tell you that your opinion is wrong.

    3. There are other, better places for you to voice your concerns. There are thread specifically for it.

    4. Knee jerk responses to perceived minecraft hate.

One of those four is probably the reason why any one user is arguing with you.

posted a message on Why would it take Mojang 2-3 weeks to release it?
    Quote from Patrickrand

I don't think he was asking why it was being split into two updates. He was asking why what was playable in the demo at pax isn't being added yet.

Simply put, we don't know. There's probably not a lot being added, as it were, but being refined. I'm sure they're still tweaking the new world gen codes, what with all the new things that have been added there, and that takes time. Have to edit the code, gen a world, look around for the pertinent parts, see if they look good, gen a few dozen more worlds just to make sure there's no weird effects happening, and if something is weird you have to go back and try to figure out what is causing that. World gen code is always a bit tricky since it can behave in unexpected ways. You want to make sure that the code generating the church for the npc village isn't occasionally spitting out something distressingly phallic, or making rivers do loop-de-loops.

posted a message on How 1.8 has affect my views of Mojang
My reply is basically to point at the link in my signature because I've already written quite a long explanation as to why your points are invalid or uninformed. Yes, this thread and it's complaints are so old and repetitious that I can literally point to a post I made a while ago as a response.

posted a message on Volcanoes in 1.8?
More then likely, if they're added at all, a volcano will just be a large mountain with a hole at the top connecting to a vertical shaft thats filled with lava. Maybe lava will flow out in certain places, but I doubt we'll get eruptions, at least in a proper way. We may get instances of the top of the volcano just blowing apart as though it was filled with tnt and allowing the lava to flow, but thats about it.

Here's the video of notch showing off and talking about aspects of the new release. He talks about the split very near the end.
