    Digging down is what I do on the second day of every single world I make.

    Day 1 - Do all the usual stuff, coal, wood, etc.
    Day 2 - Collect as much wood as I possibly can, make a buttload of ladders, dig straight down in my mine and then just strip mine at level 13 or so, gets me lots of diamond/iron/redstone/coal/gold and then I can just ladder straight back up.

    By about day 4 or 5 I'm typically on about 15 or 20 diamond...

    Wow people get ridiculously defensive of minecraft really easily...
