I first played on my friends acct to try it before I bought it, I used some of his stuff and after asking a few questions, decided to mine for diamond, well I, surprisingly, found some rather quick and thought id mine it. But I didnt have a pick as mine had just broken, so i decided to mine it with a stone axe. Needless to say i was distrought when i didnt get any diamond
Apparently people dont know much about furnaces and what burns for how long in them.
GUIDE:
STICKS: SMELTS HALF AN ITEM OF ANY SMELTABLE ITEM
SAPPLING: SMELTS ONE ITEM OF ANY SMELTABLE ITEM
PLANKS/LOGS: SMELTS 1.5 ITEMS OF ANY SMELTABLE ITEM
COAL: SMELTS 8 ITEMS OF ANY SMELTABLE ITEM
CHARCOAL: EXACTLY THE SAME AS COAL, BUT MADE FROM SMELTED/BURNED RAW LOGS
LAVA BUCKET: 100 ITEMS!!! TO USE FULL CAPACITY RESTOCK FURNACE WITH THE ITEM YOUR SMELTING (as in put 12 more iron ores in if there are 8 left, then remove ingots)
Notes: Food is different, because it takes time to remove food that you cooked then place food into furnace.
How do you gt 8x more payoff? If you were just burning logs, then yes, it is better to turn it to charcoal first.
Log:15s
planks:15s each, 60 seconds per log
coal/charcoal: 80s
And once you factor in the fuel cost to make the charcoal, it is only 70s per log.
This means that charcoal is only marginally more effective in a furnace than simply making planks. Nothing in here makes charcoal 8x more effective. In fact, coal is somewhat more effective because you don't have to spend fuel making it. The big win on using charcoal is not the increases smelting time. It does increase it, but its not that drastic. The big win is letting you make torches, and hence breaking the need to find coal on your first night. Running furnaces off of tree farms is just as doable without using charcoal.
But it is just that little bit faster to use charcoal than planks, so if you have a huge smelting project having a few furnaces turning logs to charcoal as many more smelt cobble/sand/whatever and you are gathering more logs at the same time, it can be beneficial
On the SMP server I play on, every world portal ends up pointing to the same nether portal. The portal in the nether, returns to the first world portal made. Bug? Yes. Annoying? Yes.
I dont think Its a bug, all the portals in the main world were probably built within a 1024 radius of the first one, check out the link Wethospu posted
I am a little bit backwards, I tend to put it on normal or hard for the begining, to make it a challange to become well established, but once i have my huge castle with mob traps, and farms of every kind, and have chests upon chests of every material I need, I then tend to turn it to peaceful when the challange subsides, and to allow myself to build worry free

No, if you read the first post he said he is not using bukkit, he is using the standard server provided by notch
