Not necessarily the best views but for a vanilla nomad wandering around, I have some alright ones, though with high FOV.

Not that much; 1 redstone and four iron per 2000x2000 map. You would have to dig down for the redstone once, but one trip would probably give you enough compasses for a long time. Paper would be more of an issues if you're strictly nomadic. You could probably do it with 3 inventory stacks: one of cane you plant every time you need a new map; one of compasses; and the map.

Paper is not too bad, since often I come across sugar cane, but I've used up all my redstone on dispensers (more on that later), ill probably start making maps and backtracking once I have found a mushroom biome. The only reason is I would like to complete the goal in finding a mushroom biome and then explore tenfold, instead of mainly searching for a few key areas (namely ice spikes, mushroom biome, perhaps a Mesa).

I'm going to begin getting much more organized in my screenshotting after this update primarily due to having a hard time finding where I left off, but nonetheless, I finally left the forest and found myself a plains, with a peculiar structure in the distance.

What an amazing find! I penned up the villages with cobblestone to prevent zombies from attacking said villagers, and I really didn't feel like spawning in a zombie siege (which most likely was impossible due to the relatively small size of the village. I also blockaded myself in the confines of the blacksmith building, and looted the chest. A saddle! This will greatly come in handy if I ever find horses (or if I find carrots and decide to saddle up pigs). I gathered the food and the spare iron loot, all the while smelting my raw meat and ores.

I peer out the window and see that daytime has arrived to join the adventure party, only leaving me to exit my refuge. I broke the cobblestone walls that kept the villagers locked in their houses and entered each to check what they were willing to trade. Turns out, nothing that I could use to my advantage. With my iron axe I gathered the books from the library's bookshelf for future use. I leave the village satisfied with my new treasures.

This trade caught my eyes, however I was not going to stay in the village long term and thus it wasn't feasible for me to take advantage of it.
    A gorgeous biome!
When I leave the village I find myself facing a Mega Taiga biome, with massively tall trees. 1.7 biomes are quite awesome, in my opinion. I cross a few rivers (the point of no return!) and climb one of the massive trees.

The view, is outstanding. I maxed out my render distance on this (though probably didn't let it all load). Honestly, in retrospect, I wish I turned fancy graphics on for it (and captured the view on another biome with many pillars).

I also find wolves! Packs and packs of countless wolves. I hang around for the night because I only have enough bones to tame one, and I wish to have a pack of my own at one point. I basically trap my tamed wolf in this memorial thing to stop him from attacking mobs with me. It was a long night and skeletons, being my arch minecraft enemy as always, didn't spawn that much. I ended up finding a pack of three in a cave however, and tamed another wolf. A bothersome creeper appeared as soon as I tamed the wolf, but thankfully it didn't explode. I slept in the open night, with my wolves (Skipper and Charlie) sleeping in the memorial.

    The pack begins to form.

A cold taiga now greets us as we leave the land of podzol.

Hurray! We finally caught up to the spoiler alert.

The most amazing discovery occured after I crossed an ice plains, however. This literally blew me away.

A winter wonderland! A frosty paradise! An ice spike biome! This seems like an overreaction, but this is the first I found on vanilla survival, and as the rules state:
When you pass a river or ocean, you may not backtrack (unless you die).2) Sleeping is allowed, but you must make a new bed every time.3) I may only make a permanent base when I discover a mooshroom island. I may make smaller bases (with no chests, enderchests are allowed always as a silk touch backpack) in strongholds or ice spike biomes.
I essentially am allowed to make a small base now to come back to for whatever I need and settle for a few days. One thing the rules do not state, is that you are not allowed to use chests anywhere of any kind in any biome besides mushroom biomes, but you may use droppers in smaller bases. This seems fair to me since they require redstone to craft (which how I fond that will be talked about later), and are not nearly as efficient. Obviously its only for the small base though, and I won't abuse it. After this update shebang I'll edit in the unwritten rules I basically follow after the creation of this thread. Onto the base, it only has two small rooms, one for wolves in the entrance, and the other for furnaces and droppers. A mineshaft can be seen in the backroom. I raise my wolf populations and plant a few saplings around, while marveling at the amazing biome.

Sadly I couldn't find any screenshots of the backroom, but it was mostly as described and looked similar to this one.

A surface dungeon? That is quite an awesome thing to find. As was the redstone, sharpness 3 enchanted book, and other amazing loot. That's all for this update, I'll probably get another one up later today.

Alright I'll just post one update.

So many screenshots that it is hard to pinpoint where I left off, and the FOV may fluctuate on screenshots, but mainly will be the maximum.

I trekked through the forest and found more sheep, and ended up killing them and leaving another memorial.

I see plains in the distance and hunt mobs along the entire way gathering a large quantity of meat. I see a plains biome and a large herd of cows. I attack some hostile monsters that threaten me and decide to craft a bed together to skip the night. On the morning I leave the bed as the rules state and move into a taiga. I sight a black bunny among the trees as I journey on. I go through biome and biome, gathering materials, hunting, and occasionally mining iron. When I see sheep I dye them yellow and shear them, a relatively efficient method for wool storage in my inventory. I even pass an extreme hills biome. I mine through a two branch cave as well.

A screenshot of the forests and plains ahead.

I'll update this thread daily with screenshots of what I did later, and I may have to split that into multiple updates. Frankly it has a lot of content.

    Spoiler Alert:

I find a few wolves tame two after a bit of skele grinding, and breed them. I essentially have a sustainable pack of wolves now.

The only issue with the map is it will require a large amount of redstone and iron.

I'm cool with a large FOV; I like seeing as much as possible of what's going on.

Have you considered making an ongoing map of your travels? Obviously it's not practical to keep bringing them along but you could post a shot of each as you leave it behind.

I like the idea of carrying a map like that, ill do that on the next update.

Seems interesting. But you really should lower your FOV.

Probably should, I am very used to playing on maximum, but perhaps on screenshots I can lower it.

Hello everyone, I have trouble sticking to my survival worlds. Aside from my original 1.5.2 world that eventually got corrupted when I opened it in 1.7.2 (noob move on my part), I never really stuck to my worlds.

I honestly enjoy playing a nomadic way the most. On a friend's private server, I traveled 10,000 blocks off from spawn just to get away from everyone and to set up me and one of my friend's town, The Republic of Bacon (besides the point, perhaps something for another thread).

The experience was amazing, discovering villages (my friend trolled me by striking lightning so I had frequent witch encounters), getting a multitude of saddles and armors, finding interesting new biomes, it was great. That even is just my most recent encounter with my enjoyment of a nomadic lifestyle, though I usually set up a base at one point or another.

I've decided to make a survival world based primarily off of this, with a few guidelines.

    1) When you pass a river or ocean, you may not backtrack (unless you die).

    2) Sleeping is allowed, but you must make a new bed every time.

    3) I may only make a permanent base when I discover a mooshroom island. I may make smaller bases (with no chests, enderchests are allowed always as a silk touch backpack) in strongholds or ice spike biomes.

    4) No more killing sheep, you may only shear them if you dye them yellow.

    5) No chests whatsoever. No hoppers whatsoever. Enderchests are allowed as a silk touch backpack or in small bases. Droppers and Dispensers are allowed in small bases. Everything goes in Mushroom Biomes.

    ---

    Now for the first update:

I spawn in a nice plains biome with plenty of sheep. I kill all in the area near me for the mutton, and smelt it in a furnace. I gather stone tools very quickly and find a river early on. I cross it into the forest ahead. I've decided to dye any sheep I find yellow to commemorate the fallen sheep of the plains.

    Sheep grazing in the field.

More sheep and an overview of my food supply.

Cooking the meat I hunted from the plains at the river.

A last look into spawn, more or less.

I stumble upon a ravine, and end up falling into it. That was probably one of the earliest deaths I have gotten in minecraft and was relatively embarrassing. Sadly I ended up not picking up the wool. I luckily did get most of my stuff back, though. I mine a bit of iron on the walls lining the ravine, and climb my way out to the surface as nighttime approaches. I climb a tree hurriedly and smelt my iron and food in it. I create an iron sword and pickaxe and literally jump from tree to tree, spotting a few enderman on the way. I reach a swamp biome, and the trees are too far apart. I jump to the ground and dash about the biome until the light square in the sky illuminates the lands. I did hunt slimes to get slimeballs in case I would ever need them, but otherwise avoided monsters. I hunt a few more animals and find squids! My second river passed, who knows what is to come.

    An open ravine

    .

An early, terrible death to a new world.

    My items found again!

    Mining iron as nighttime sets.

Smelting food and iron on top of a tree in a small safe area.

An enderman peering from below, holding a grass block.

A swamp ahead, promising more spread trees.

Realizing I didn't pick up the wool for the first time, and being unable to craft a bed, I had only one choice: to jump down.

On the surface, and now time to mad dash from monsters!

Daytime will shed its incredible light soon!

After hunting, I find another forest.

Squids! and yet another river, to signify the fact that I am now at a point of no return. Though the lands are unseen!

posted a message on Question regarding Iron and Diamond tools

I personally use stone tools as soon as possible in starting a world, then proceed to strip mining to find a cave. Once I get my first ores of Iron, I use iron tools permanently. I don't solely use diamond tools until I am much farther into the game.

A camel mob mod, preferably similar to detains put in this thread:

    http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-discussion/suggestions/2473378-camel-mobs

1.7.10 would be the best but I'm not at all picky on versions. All camel mods now either are very outdated or require (item) on a stick to ride.

    thank you!
