To have no backwards compatibility and make modders -- who have no budget -- scramble to try to keep up with their changes is not a move of an independent studio that's looking out for the people who drive Minecraft. Connected textures is one.
I feel like somebody came by and said "Hey, I'm going to kick down your sand castle, but don't worry, you can build a better one." And that's happened a couple of times, never actually being able to finish something without it being ruined by another "great update." That's a pattern, and unless it's changed, it will become a company protocol. It's a type of "built-in obsolescence" which is a cornerstone of closed systems.
Most of you are not going to understand it because you're not creating texture packs or adventure maps. But don't you do everything you can to fend off the creeper? Do you build cool forts in the mountains with the hope that one day the creepers will blown you to bits? If the game mechanics were mis-balanced so that you could never accomplish anything in Minecraft, would you continue playing it? No. But that's what's going on when they continue to break the game with every update. The people who are making things, the "creators", are seeing their work constantly destroyed. Eventually, they will go elsewhere.
All that's required is that 1.) Mojang continue to break the tools people use to create with. 2.) A better platform that is more friendly to creators comes available.
Those two conditions make the perfect storm, and they are growing. I speculate that if the creators go elsewhere, the livelihood of Minecraft will be placed in the hands of those who take screenshots of cakes, and frag each other in as many ways as possible. In other words, there will be hype and no substance. If you're a creator then you've already sensed this happening. Maybe you couldn't put a finger on it; maybe you rolled with the punches for fear of mob retaliation. But you knew something was happening. If it grows, it will mark Minecraft's descent, after the creators have moved on to friendlier pastures and the rest have had their way with her.
I hope to be the fool who foretold a future that never happened. Minecraft is awesome, like every bit of nostalgia from my whole life wrapped into one thing. That's why I'm rattling a sword: not to get attention like a hype-monger, but to forewarn as someone whose watched it happen a few times. And Mojang I believe to be simply lacking foresight, not being malicious. Maybe I'm being emotional here, but the bottom line is that Mojang lacks no budget to put in backwards compatibility and be friendly to the modders they are purporting to help.
Remember that Mojang are the creators and the modders are leeching off the game - why don't the modders just produce their own hugely popular platform that they can do what they want on.
Also I believe that if you don't use the new launcher you can have a 1.5.2 minecraft that never changes so that all your mods and textures will continue to work FOREVER - if it hurts so much why put yourself through it unnecessarily
And with the new launcher you can create profiles that have a minecraft 1.5.2 that you can duplicate and mod with only minor issues at present - such as having to use the provides program to transform your texture packs to the new resources pack (this seems to mean that Mojang has considered the modders and provided a way for them to continue to mod, odd that some myopic dipsticks can't (won't) see it)
THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF THE NEW API THAT MOJANG IS WORKING ON IS TO MAKE MODDING AND ADDING TEXTURE PACKS EASY - and as an outsider (to Mojang) I believe they are planning to get Minecraft to that stage and then the only changes will be via mods and texture packs.
Also remember that snapshots are not official release versions - the purpose of them is to try new features, have experienced users test the developments (snapshot users are free product testers, they probably thought that was a smart idea at the time) and fix reported problems.
To summarise - if snapshots are causing you problems - DON'T USE THEM - it is not compulsory. Sit back and wait for the next official release and then complain (you know you will have to, about something, ANYTHING)
Personally I am happy to be along for the ride, but I really hope the API is delivered SOON

Can anyone suggest a good ranged weapon in the DW20 1.10.2 pack.
I've tried the psi "light up enemy" and the "explode" options but they don't affect the end dragon much, explode deals with the beacons pretty well though.

Yes you can - I have done that in my 1.9.4 world and it works fine. Even better if you use botania regen flower right beside the altar as well. You will still want to put a Suffering ritual directly under the altar, a spawner or cursed earth below that and a Regen ritual under that as soon as possible but for early game it works fine.

All good, as this is an early test pack situation I have no worries cheating one in. I need to make the top tier teleposer now not when it is available.

I created a creative test world this morning and tried Coal, Redstone Dust, Ender Pearls, Quartz and Ghast Tears.
All I did was load, place an Infusing Laser add the catalysts. That should work right?
And got the same "Not a catalyst!".
Sorry I forgot to quote last message so you may have missed it, I am on the current version (1.7.1) of the IanAnderson's 1.9.4 modpack
Edit - Problem was with the modpack -

Any idea how to get the Demon Blood Shard in 1.9.4?

Don't know if you got an answer for this. I saw DW20 place a diamond block under the Master ritual stone to increase the distance - maybe (just guessing) a block of emerald on top of the Master ritual stone could do silk touch for Crusher

Is this still 'free' cobble, or dirt, or do you need to provide the quarry with it
Also have a problem on Deep Resonance - will not acknowledge ANY catalyst

And if you want the tainted crystal you overload a crucible in the chunk

Just had the good luck of finding WayOfTime in a stream and this is the reply
Me @WayofFlowingTime - Another quick ? What is the BM way to repair the sentient sword?
WayofFlowingTime : Another sentient sword or a Demon Will Crystal (not gem)
Which is to say the crystal that you grow.

I don't remember, may be a ritual, but the consensus seems to be that making a new one is far easier/cheaper. If you take a look at this , It is a walkthrough (Part 1) with WayOfTime explaining the mod, in the next episode they might get to it.

What do you mean "you can't make anything to transfer will between gems" - the progression is fairly simple you make 2 of each gem as you progress and you transfer the will - simply by placing the second will in you inventory and while holding the gem you are transferring from you right click until all the will has moved to the other gem.
The sentient sword - has a blood magic repair option if you want to use it.
The item routing I believe is simply a way to make sure that there is a routing option if other mods are not included.
And the ore doubling is again for those packs that don't include industrial/technical mods.

I have just updated from 1.9 to 1.9.4 and 2 rituals that where working in 1.9 are not working properly now.
The farming ritual (Harvest Moon) broke the crop and left the planted seed in 1.9 but now just breaks to farmland requiring replanting.
The mining ritual (Magnetism) was working over a large range (64 radius?) by placing a diamond block under the master ritual stone - in 1.9.4 it has worked but only in a small area (possibly a chunk). Has the way to get the range changed?

I realise this answer is a long time coming but - https://www.youtube.com/user/direwolf20/playlists.
But I think you may be looking for Let's Play single player series 8, which will be 1.9 soonish. And your seeing Server Play Season 9 and wondering where Season 8 is. Server Play is the bleeding edge series with mods that are being tested, series 8 of Server Play was 1.8 and was short lived as mod devs moved onto 1.9
