My sister's laptop isn't working very well, so she's looking for a new one.

    Requirements:
    $400 price range
    Quiet
    Durable
Does not need to have good specs - just for internet

But what kind of graphic card should I get?

It doesn't matter, although I would recommend one of the lower end Radeons. A 7770 would be good for a lower budget, with good power consumption, too. Minecraft isn't a particularly graphics intensive game.

I'd think the i7 itself doesn't need a graphic card.

The graphics integrated on it aren't very good. There were some benchmarks with the 3rd generation cpus(which have slightly better performance, slightly worse overclocking, less power usage, but twice the graphics performance), and they didn't even get 30 fps on maximum settings. You'll need a graphics card to run minecraft well, especially if you're shelling out for an i7. If money's an issue, just save $100 by getting an i5 instead.

It will depend on the graphics card. If you want to save a good $140 you can switch to an i5 2500k or 3570k and only have 8 GB of RAM, it won't make a difference in most games, especially minecraft. It would be useful for rendering videos, though, although I'm not sure how much benefit an i7 would give and if it would be worth it.

Also, there's more to cores than appears. For example, both AMD and Intel have ways of getting having threads/cores share resources: intel has 2 threads share a core, while AMD has two cores share an FPU, and there are probably a whole lot of other technical things that I don't know about.

2 things you do not need: Windows and an optical drive. Install Linux with a USB, and you just saved over $100.

I believe that a minecraft server only uses 2 cores (although I think they're threading it better in the future), so as long as your computer isn't using 2 of its cores (and enough RAM for a server), then you'll be fine.

Even if it doesn't, you'll still be able to do everyday things easily. I'm running a server and client on a pentium d, and it's still not too much for things like making a forum post.

Now all we need is leaked benchmarks.

    Tada!

Seems to be slightly better than a 580.

If you're overclocking, go for the 2600k or 2700k. Ivy bridge doesn't overclock as well.

It will do very poorly. It uses low end, previous generation, intel graphics, all of which are bad.

i think windows is in the hundreds right now for desktops and servers

Servers can have up to a terabyte or more of RAM, but that's not the point. The point is that the person thought that having 32 GB of ram would make their computer faster, even though it wouldn't really.

You'll want a more powerful graphics card, especially for bf3.

Also, there's no point of getting an unlocked processor with a locked motherboard.

I would probably boost the RAM up to 8 gb, just because RAM's so cheap.

Acer is known for poor quality control, so I wouldn't recommend their monitors.

Overall, decent, but a little unbalanced.

    Not really

That's a comparison with the exact same specs, except for each CPU is clocked 100mhz higher than in our hypothetical builds.

The APU lost by quite a bit in gaming, especially considering that you can't overclock the 3850.

I'll grab a pile of bricks from my backyard, you can buy that.

He doesn't need a Hard drive or an OS, so that should cut down a little.

He still won't get much for that.
    This the best I got.

Acer doesn't have too good quality control.

You also won't get much for recording on a laptop for $500. The best you could get is an APU (CPU and GPU combined into one, model names such as A8-4500m).
