^^ This is a strip mine. The term refers, not to mining in "strips," but to "stripping" everything from the land, leaving nothing behind except for a giant hole in the ground. In Minecraft, this is commonly known as a "quarry," and it is a horribly inefficient method of acquiring resources other than cobblestone. I think you meant branch mining, instead, which refers to digging long tunnels (or "strips" if you insist, but I wouldn't.) The "branch" in branch mining refers to the side-tunnels, or "branches" that come off of the main access tunnel or "trunk." But even if you just dig one long, straight tunnel, without the branches, you're still not "strip" mining. You may not technically be "branch" mining, either, but it's still a lot more accurate to say than "strip" mining.

Hmm. Obviously a mod, as you realized. But it would be cool to be added, now that the lonelyness feeling is somewhat lessened due to villagers and other additions.
I've been playing since the seeecret friday update that added minecarts, and at that time multiplayer was practically non functional. So I played tons of single player. But ever since multiplayer has been reliable, it's been just about the only thing I play. Like some other people said, I do test stuff or mess around in singleplayer. But that's pretty much the only time I play singleplayer now.
