I think you lost me on the second video when you were demonstrating how the two component pieces fit together. My mind still isn't making the leap between "push button and receive minecart" to sitting in a propelled minecart.
It is an advanced redstone/minecraft design. You might want to try something more basic first. If not, I suggest you build it as he shows, and it should start to make sense after you have it working.

Edit: What I mean is, once you have it built as he has shown (with the carts running around, and resetting every 5 rotations) then all you'll need is to hook up a button to get the cart to come out and boost something. I can understand that being a leap from his video, but he does point out what piece of track needs to be powered to bring the booster cart out (such as in his first video).

Very nice. Some of those tricks will be sure to come in handy. The whole thing is very cool. I plan on building one soon. I thought the video was pretty good. Maybe a bit slow at parts, but its not a big deal.

The only thing is I would like a brief thought on how you would make it boost longer/farther (with more carts/metal). I think I could come up with something once I have built it and played with it for a bit, but would like to hear what you suggest.

I don't see why there are 2 wooden pressure plates...
There is only one wooden plate down with the boat counter.

I am pretty sure a cart will crap out after single boosted of 419-420 of boost in a row. In most of these other booster systems (that are not just a very long booster) there is a turn and some time when the carts are not boosting. In my system I calculated my loop booster system went about 480 before it crapped out. So for the extra 60 I attribute them to the parts where there is no boost.

With a double booster (very long straight) the carts will go about 300 blocks before going crazy (mine reverse direction). Thereby, I believe a double booster setup boosts at a rate of 1.4x a single booster.

    Simply:
Straight track with a single booster, 420 before turning around.
Straight track with a double booster, 300 before turning around.
    Thus, double = single x 1.4.

The test was run on a set of tracks 500 blocks long. Note: "double" means a booster on each side, not two carts on a single booster. These numbers may be off by 5 blocks or so. To count the distance I rode in the cart and placed a block on the ground when it turned around. I probably misplaced the block by a small amount. Additional complications are caused by riding in the cart; with no rider the numbers may be different. However I guess that it doesn't matter when boosted, and therefor the ratio of single to double would not change. In conclusion I place a random certainty percentage of 94% assurance on the correctness of this test. :Pig:

Ah! You're twisting my words!! I don't have that solution in the tutorial- it's taking all my effort just to compact that damn counter.

Heh, didn't mean it like that...

When I first saw this picture, I just kind of went... guhh....

it's doubtful that someone will need the full power.

haha, yea. If someone is riding in the cart, there is no way you could use all the power here. My empty cart distance x put a rider in it (4300x12) gives over 50,000 blocks. That would be some map!

I do have a solution for that though ... I'm just about finished with the tutorial

    I look forward to it

Xaiier: For a second I thought your cart was still going after 2 irl days... Having said that, your data doesn't match what mine says (or the other way around if you prefer). My cart stops within one minecraft day. I wonder if it is because you have a circle and the cart only turns one way? Mine has lots of turns both ways, and I think turns make the cart slow down, but that is just a guess.

Mine is a ~25 long track with two "reversers" at the ends that utilize the approaching-a-turn glitch. I wanted to make a straight track as long as the OP, but I got lazy fast.

The two days of travel is insane though, for the simplicity. I counted 100 loops back and forth meaning a length of 2500 and it was nowhere near to stopping. Sadly a unmanned cart only goes around 15-20 times, but it would be very easy to just add lengths to the booster section until you reached the absolute limit.

I do believe turns do slow down the cart, but I am not sure. Because I am much too lazy to try to replicate your insane maze of tracks, it might be easier for you to make a simple 25 length loop and try your booster again.

As a side note, my idea would work nicely with a setup of a clock & repeaters down the tunnel your booster is in. Make them strobe in the opposite direction of travel to give the impression of insane speed. :biggrin.gif:

Oh, the difference could easily be explained by you riding the cart. For some reason I thought you were testing an empty cart. However if you are riding in the cart, I can totally understand it going for days (minecraft days..)

I would do a simple loop like you said, but I dont want to count 100+ loops... haha

    Edit: yea, as the8bitengineers said

So I've been testing stuff relating to this thread, and thought I might share.
    (used MCEdit+INVedit+minecraft singleplayer)

I created a loop 10 long, with a single booster on each side. I attached a manual switch to let the boosted cart out after I felt like it. The first thing I did was see how many loops you can do before the cart breaks/freaks out/goes backwards. The answer was 25. I did the test 3 times, and every time after 25 loops it gave up and went backwards for about 15 tiles. This is equivalent to a straight single booster of length 500 (length x its-a-circle x times around the circle = 10x2x25), although a straight booster wouldn't waste energy with the corners/ends where there is no boost so it would be shorter.

The next question I had was how far would that make an empty cart go? The answer is over 4300 track tiles. Of course this was a giant loop that went around and around, not a long straight shot. The actual loop was 532 (28x19) track pieces, bunched together as tight as can be fit (see pic). The empty cart went around this giant loop 8 times, and 3/4 of another time. There was also a large connector from the start of the loop to the end, which isnt taken into account; only makes the actual total larger.

    SoOOOoooooo,
With all that said, I think the 5-7 loops the OP (the8bitengineers) uses is nowhere near the max. I know I only used single boosters, and him double, but I still think it could be 15+ rotations on his loop. Unfortunately, that would take both forever and a ton of space; not to mention resources. I wish there was a way to count to 15-25 or so easily.

Type of boost Length Empty cart travels

    Single 10 ~120
    Double 10 ~160
    Single loop 480 4300+
    Single straight 250 2200+

... new concept to propel empty carts ...

    Sounds good!

Here is an off the wall idea: pig spawners with a water conveyor belt leading into a cart hopper system that sends the cart once it has a pig. Possibly doable, probably way too complicated, and definitely ridiculous. haha! (all assuming pigs weigh as much as humans..)

To OP, have you tried running your system till it breaks, and noting the loops? I think I recall you saying you tried it with 7 loops, but it took too long. If you split the loops into separate sets, you could sacrifice space used for a shorter waiting period. For instance, instead of doing 6 trips around the track you have, make 3 sets of the track, have the first as is, but send the cart after 2 rotations around the loop. From that set, you send it to start around the second loop, and start another cart on the first one. Etc. This way you only have to wait for 2 trips around the track. Of course you could make it one trip with 6 separate track loops.

Also: didnt someone say they could trigger buttons/pressure plates without driving a cart over them? Anyone know that trick? I'm sure I can figure it out, so I'm just throwing this question out for kicks. Maybe I'll get an answer and wont have to do any research/trial-and-error.

This idea seemed real promising, so I gave the simplest form (giant long booster) a shot. Unfortunately, even with a length of effectively over 110 and double boosted the whole way, an unmanned cart wont make it from my base to spawn. (so i can return the cart) (and yes, it is a long way)

I may extend the booster even farther, but going from single to double boost only added about 25% more distance. I wanted to see if the idea worked as far as perpetual-ish goes. I'm sure it would work for carts with people (or mobs?) in them, but the plan to use it to return carts seems overly ambitious.

posted a message on Interested in making a map.
As far as I know, there are two three four five ways.

The normal way: start the game, and build **** in game.
The other way: Get a program like MCEdit, and build **** in the editor.

Either way takes a long time to get anything worthwhile.

    Edits:
The shady way: Find someone else who did it, and steal their work.
The lame way: Find a picture online, and use a tool to turn it into a map.
The lazy way: Ask someone else to do it for you.

Finished it. Very nice. I liked the underwater part. Gave a sense of urgency to the situation. I suggest making one like that, but where once you choose, you are stuck in that direction. They should still be able to make it, but maybe it's harder or something. Or even sends you back to the start.

More suggestions.. either make the maze parts more mazy, or make them have more one way doors. It seemed a bit easy to just explore the whole thing. I liked the "throw all your stuff in the fire" idea. More places that look like dead-ends would be cool. To open that one door I think we were suppose to throw an item into the water and have it press the button.. but I jumped down there.. and got stuck. You could make it a hole in the wall, instead of a pit in the floor. That might fix that. You also seemed to have a thing for lefts. Almost all the right ways were on the left. Was that intentional?

I didn't get the 3 doors and 3 levers with redstone room. Was it suppose to be a puzzle? Seemed pretty easy to just open all the doors and then explore each one.

Is there any chance we can get a way to save the chunks/blocks, but not do lighting passes? I just want to save my work while working, without waiting for it to calculate all the lighting. Or would that mess up loading the file?

    Good to know, thanks.

Could you explain what the settings "block buffer" and "space height" are for? I see them in the mcedit.ini file. Changing the block buffer value doesn't seem to affect the program. I didn't mess with space height. I did notice that when saving to a schematic it worked when the bounding box was smaller then the default value for block buffer (67million). Only when the box area was much much larger then this 67 million did I get the "too large" error message. Many times, before I understood what value it was using, I crashed the program. I'm not sure if you wanted all those logs too; seemed like it would be easy to know about.

    Suggestion:
It might be nice to just have a small counter in the corner when selecting blocks to tell the user how many are selected. Better yet, how many blocks will be selected. That way I could adjust the box before committing to an area/size. (maybe only show a counter if the area gets above a certain threshold, or if we hover a second or so without nailing the area down, or if one of the 2 horizontal lengths exceed a limit, or something like that). I suppose my point is that while crashing is obviously bad, an error message after I try to do something is still not the best.
