Level 12 is the best if you want diamonds, obsidian, etc.
Soooooo I guess if you expanded that on forever then yeah that works too.

LOL. Currently I use a 3 x 2 (width x height) tunnel. I then branch of with 3 x 2 x 8 tunnels every 2 blocks.
It looks something like 2 blocks, 3 x 2 opening, 2 blocks, 3 x 2 opening for the length of my main mineshaft.

I could see that method working, though it isn't what I would call elegant.
To some degree efficiency takes a back seat to aesthetics and enjoyment methinks.

That largely depends on when you stop timing the mining. For example, mining a 2 x 1 tunnel is great but upon finishing you must walk all the way back to the beginning which is all lost time.
By mining the fingers at this point, one would travel the necessary distance to leave the mine and recoup some of it in the form of more materials.
