posted a message on How to farm?

To solve this issue, build a farm in the spawn chunks. They're loaded as long as the world is loaded. If you can't find them, a compass points you to the world spawn.

Plant growth and decay does not happen in the spawn chunk unless the player is within range. Unless the wiki is wrong -which has not been my experience.

EDIT: Sorry, completely missed Martin's post 2 above mine. Anyhow, just confirming that the wiki is your friend and crops don't grow unless you are around.

posted a message on Working with Villagers

Water elevators work very well for me. I find it much easier than building an uphill path with rails / powered rails. Once you have them at the correct elevation, you can drop them into a temporary room with a rail exiting through a one block wide gap. I use trapdoors one block high over the rail to keep the villager from walking out of the room but once they are in the minecart they will pass right through the trapdoor.

posted a message on Arrrgh! Portal in Nether is at bedrock with lava above for miles!

I'll have to remember the piston idea. I've had this happen before but it was with the 2nd nether portal in that world. When I located a stronghold I made the mistake of making the overworld portal too low on the Y axis so I ended up under a lava lake in the nether. I noted the coordinates and went back through the portal, traveled in the over world back to my main nether portal and then traveled in the nether to scout out the location of the 2nd portal. I was going to need to figure out a path to that portal in the nether anyhow. It turned out I was about 10-15 blocks from a small island in the lava lake. I made my way over and dug my way down and it worked out.

posted a message on Any "older" folks play Minecraft?

I'll out myself. My first console was the Atari 2600. Fast forward, married with child and 2nd console was original Wii. Sometime after that my (now) 14 year old son started playing minecraft PC and later PE. He would show me stuff that I would supportingly say "cool" but thought it looked too pixelated and just didn't "get it". Later, 3rd console was PS4 and we purchased Minecraft (again) but I was excited we could play this game together. He would look up stuff to build while I was busy building my tower of dirt and mining. LOL. I ended up making it look nice but I wanted to build something tall and look around our world. I also liked the fact that no matter how high I fell I could land in one block of water and live. Love Minecraft physics. Once I hit the clouds I capped all the dirt with stone and lit it with torches and it served as a landmark to find home when we explored.

Fast forward some more, I bought my own Minecraft PC at version 1.7 and found Monkeyfarm (and others) on youtube and started using his modified John Smith. I've started a new world on each version since then. I want to revisit my old worlds so I think I will make copies and play those in the latest version while keeping the originals. I Recently bought PE and have it on my galaxy S5 and tab S2, really only playing it on my tablet.

Of course my son barely wants to hear about minecraft these days and often says it sounds like it got to complicated. I told him the PS4 app would be fun for us to start a new world again. I will be much more help than just building a tower of dirt. ;)

posted a message on 1.10 slime chunk not working?
    Quote from LaughingOtter»

I'd been having the same problem as the OP myself, and various the "Oh, you must be doing it wrong, have you tried adding more torches?" suggestions from all around the internet were not really very productive. If you have the right chunks, then you should get a few slimes if you've wait long enough. There would have been no point putting them in the game otherwise, if none of them were ever going to spawn to attack explorers.

So, it seems the chunkfinder app is out of date or just plan wrong for at least some games. Fortunately I have hit on a solution that should work for anyone, and I thought I should share, because searching revealed that many people have this same problem, and it's an ongoing problem. Many old youtube videos will just refer you to the chunkfinder app when building slime farms.

    What I did was this:

    1) Created a new creative superflat world with the same game-seed as the game I wanted to build.
    2) Located the co-ordinates where I want to build the farm.
    3) Divided the area all around it up into chucks with fences. Basically I replicated the grid in the chunkfinder app, it was still useful for that :P I enclosed the surrounding 100 chunks, which took me about half an hour to an hour.
    4) Turned on monsters and put torches in all the squares that spawned slimes. I repeated the process several times to build up a good picture, flying far enough out of the area for everything to de-spawn and then flying back. After a few repetitions I was confident I had built up an accurate map.

I then tested this by loading a copy of my main game in creative and quickly carving out just one level of some of the marked chunks. Evey one produced slimes. None of the chunks highlighted by the chunkfinder app produced anything.

I don't want to disparage the author of the chunkfinder app. Obviously it used to work, and everyone used it. But in my experience, it doesn't work any more, and I suggest using this manual method to map out where to dig. Remember, no higher than y=40 :)

Old thread. That sounds like a lot of work. Is this the finder you used? Odd that it didn't work for you. It has never failed me including my 1.11 world.

posted a message on My best Woodland Mansion!

Five, nice! I ended up with three from the mansion near my spawn point. I picked the seed because the mansion is just outside my spawn chunk with a village less than an arrow shot from the mansion. I can see the mansion from my house/base so I have been thinning out the forest to improve the view. I sort of want to find another mansion but I have a map to a water temple I need to visit first.

posted a message on What Type of Effect for Beacon?
    Quote from Wingsrising»

I got my first beacon not long ago and put it by my house with Speed and Regen on it (since I decided Seed 2 was just a little too fast for me to maneuver easily.) I've been digging rooms in the mountain next to my house recently, and whenever I add a new room I change the beacon to Haste 2, then change it back when I'm done. (I figure it's just two emeralds a pop, why not.)

I've been doing a little wither skeleton hunting without much luck with an eye towards getting a second beacon, though I'm not totally sure what to do with it. I actually find Haste 2 annoying when I'm not doing serious excavation since I keep overshooting and breaking blocks I didn't mean to. Maybe I wouldn't mind having Haste 1 around the house, though? And right now I can't set up a second full-pyramid beacon until I get a gold farm or something going, if I want to have the beacon anywhere but my house, I have to dig up the whole kit and caboodle. (Though I suppose I could throw 9 blocks and a beacon in my Ender Chest for a small level-1 beacon-on-the-go.)

Instead of using another 164 blocks to make a 2nd level 4 beacon, you can simply add 24 blocks to your existing pyramid. It is more efficient to combine beacon pyramids -assuming you want both powers over the same area. You can also use iron to set your beacon instead of emeralds. Iron is usually less expensive for me.

Funny what you said about Haste being annoying. I find Jump Boost annoying. It actually seems to slow me down because I spend more time in the air when jumping up one block while moving around my base. I think I'm going to get rid of that power and use the beacon to extend my Speed II coverage.

Vegetarian. I'm not one in real life and in game I always have more steak than I know what to do with so I think playing as a vegetarian would be a challenge. There isn't much saturation in the veggie food items.

posted a message on What Type of Effect for Beacon?

Depends on what you need. With the 4 level beacon you will get regeneration as a secondary power, so you will have two. In my worlds I build a 244 block main beacon with a 10x11 base and place 5 beacons on top for all 6 powers. I usually set the first beacon to Speed. As I get more I set them to Haste, Resistance, Strength and finally Jump. I then place more Speed beacons to provide seamless coverage around my base. Collecting that many skulls feels like forever.

posted a message on Woodland Mansion Secret Rooms help
    Quote from PixlPlex»

I actually explored my first mansion yesterday and I did notice that there was a cut-off space on the top floor. It had windows but was otherwise completely empty. There was also a secretish passage that lead to a chest which was kind of weird. As for levers or buttons, they'd have to be pretty well-kept secrets to be absent from the wiki.

That secret room in your screenshot has two chests hidden on top of the room. :D

After I cleared the mansion I could tell where there should be a room and I just punched a hole in the wall. Ta-da. Perhaps your mansion doesn't have one.

posted a message on John Smith Legacy MC 1.13! Windows 10 & PE 250K+ Downloads

Thank you so much for this! When I first started playing minecraft PC I quickly started using Monkeyfarm's modified John Smith pack and these days I use the JimStoneCraft edition of John Smith Legacy. I've used them so long that I have a hard time with the default pack. This looks wonderful on my galaxy tab s2. It is a bit much for my trusty old s5 though.

posted a message on Thread for posting armor and weapon names

"Glamdring" is the name of my caving / general purpose sword.

"Just for Smite" is the name of my Smite sword.

"Spidy-B-Gone" is the name of my Bane of Arthropods sword

"Death Whisper" is the name of my bow.

"Let me Axe you?" is the name of my axe.

"Silky Smooth" is the name of my shovel.

"Silky" is the name of one pickaxe.

"Fortune" is the name of another pickaxe. I used to name it Fortune Cookie as a nod/tribute to Monkeyfarm.

Weapon/tool names help me easily tell the difference between different enchantments. I never considered naming armor.
