This is great! I've been wanting a tool like this for quite a while.
It seems like you've thought of pretty much all the basics. One thing I might see being useful is the ability to add custom blocks. This would allow people to make schematics for modded minecraft as well.
Also, first!

Oh, that's a great idea! Easy enough to implement too!

Haha, because the level of interest on this site was quite low, and I didn't want to be accused of "bumping" the thread (again). Both the website and planet minecraft page are up to date, and I can be contacted through either

Update 11/09/15: Fixed a couple bugs and stability issues. Thanks for the reports!
NEW (10/28/15): We're officially out of beta! Version 1.0.1 is available. Make sure you uninstall any older versions you're using (Old Name: MCP) before installing the latest. Any files saved in the old version will be converted automatically when you open them.
Minecraft Building Planner is a planning tool that allows you to design and plan out your buildings layer-by-layer, then view it in 3D!
Noteable Features
- Using a dual-view system, the program lets you plan out your buildings and view them in 3D at the same time.
-You can import your own textures and models for the program to use, letting you see your buildings exactly as they would be in-game!
- Import .schematic files for a quick building solution.
- View the materials list to get an exact block count for your project!
Check out the website to download: www.minecraftbuildingplanner.com
Important Notes:
- Only for Windows right now. Sorry Mac and Linux!
-The program will attempt to connect to the website to check for the most recent version number, to let you know if there is an update. No information is ever sent, only received, and this can be turned off in the program settings.
Features I plan to add:
- Import pictures to convert to pixel art
- Export as .schematic
- Linux/Mac Versions
If
there's anything you like or dislike about the program, you can message
me here, email me at [email protected], or
annonmously use the contact form on the website.

I'm glad you like it! Maybe I'll throw in a way for you to select your own hotkeys, so everyone could set it up how they wish. Thanks for the feedback!

I've actually updated to version 1.0 and made a new thread for it: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding/minecraft-tools/2550450-minecraft-building-planner-all-new-out-of-beta
I'll see if I can figure out how to shut this thread down.

Agreed and it's one of the features I'll add sooner rather than later.

Sorry Work's been slowing down lately so I should get some extra time soon, I'll make it a priority to expand my education!

So I decided to write my own. I wasn't initially intending to make it publicly available, but after showing it to some friends, they suggested I post it here.
So I just want to know, is this something the community needs? Or is there a working one out there that I haven't found yet?
Here's some screenshots of what I have so far:
Design window on the left - 3D view on the right (both can be collapsed so you can view just one or the other)
And It can import .schematic files too (though it's currently limited to the block types available on the tool panel to the left, I haven't added in everything yet)
You access the different block types by Right-Clicking the buttons on the left.
Other features (current and planned):
- Saving/Loading in my own filetype
- Choose a range of layers to draw (helps when loading large plans to reduce CPU usage)
- A block count (with or without a materials list)
- Mark Layers as existing to exclude them from the block count.
- Export layer-by-layer to pdf for easy printing
- Export to .schematic (Maybe? Not sure how necessary this would be for me personally, as I only play on the PS4. But if other people used the program and wanted it, I could make an effort )
So what do you think? Something you want? If there's interest in it I'll put a version up for people to try.
Thanks!
Side Question: Does anyone know if I can get into any kind of legal trouble for using Minecraft's textures this way? I'm not planning to ever charge for the program or anything.
