I'm currently researching ways to extend this without repeating the whole structure again; Diodes don't work, as they reset it to 1 tick at the least, and traditional torch-repeaters don't accept input at all from "dead" wires. Furthermore, it is quite a hassle to use this in music, as you need a series of memory cells and a separate line of repeaters for timing for each note, however using this system does allow for extended or 'held' notes, so if I can find a way to compact it all down this will be extremely useful for our music-making community.
UPDATE! By building two of these, from opposite sides of a 1-clock, then crossing the "dead" signals, we were able to make a dead tick as fast as .25 of a tick, and it works with noteblocks as well!
Basically, it creates a line of redstone that, while appearing off, can provide power to any attached repeaters (but NOT Redstone torches or any machine).
Just an addition to what qwerty said, if you'll notice in pics 1 & 3, the sand block is NOT gone, it merely turns invisible. Stopping the machine will cause it to reappear.
once a company sells a game it becomes OUR game sure they made it but they made it for us.. We should have a right to speak out on what we believe, so all you notch **** riding kids out there need to listen up and realize that hes doing a very poor job... When Jeb was working on minecraft updates were coming out with good content and fixes, jeb is VERY good at what he does but now notch forced him off the main minecraft team to work on that stupid portable version of minecraft... I'd much rather the MAIN game get finished and content put into it before they start work on a dumb portable handheld version of minecraft... They are already starting to sell out and its sad.
Games like terraria have it right, they add content all the time and have so much for the player to do.. last time we got anything substantial was what..?? Halloween? I have hope that they can turn it around but the way they are heading doesn't look good to me..
Remember this is all just my opinion, people are allowed to have those so all you would be trolls or flamers or Notch fans just get those panties out of their bunch and calm down.
Actually, you are incorrect. You've merely purchased a license to use the game, you do not own the game itself. When you purchased the license you accepted the fact that you bought the game as-is and the chance that the game could stop being updated completely without any prior notice. We have no entitlement whatsoever to free bugfixes and updates.
Pistons are planned to be added officially, however Jens stated that they would not make it into 1.5. It is in popular belief that they will be released with 1.6, however nothing currently is known about 1.6 officially.
After running tests, a 17-block straight line of boosters (the maximum amt. that can be powered by 1 torch) will send a cart going (on perfectly flat ground) approx. 200 blocks at maximum speed, and then an additional 110 blocks whilst slowing down. At a straight, 1/1 slope, the same booster will only go about 24 blocks before falling back down. Another track powered by the same system goes ~150 blocks at full speed across variable terrain.

This is false. 1 in binary is 1. 2 is 10. 4 is 100. 8 is 1000, and 16 is 10000. 255 is 11000001.
