But what about those that played on the server, didn't pay and still got the same things ultimately, we just worked for them in game. At this point I cannot pay to get into those servers, and therefore it is 'restricting my game-play' because I cannot get into servers that have specialty mini games. People seem to forget about us that CANNOT pay and wouldn't pay if we could because paying entry to a server is far worse than paying for in game items. There is a reason the MMO market is heading towards "free to play" with in-game micro transactions compared to those "pay to play" ones in which people for the majority hate, no matter what you do people will complain and things will be unfair, because people will find a way to exploit everything.

There will always be plenty of servers that you don't have pay.

If they don't care about you or the server enough to just donate, without expecting a "rank" in return, I say, close it down.

If they care about your server, and want to keep it up and running, wouldn't they continue to do business as usual?

I fully understand your point of view, no need to call names and make assumptions.

Completely agree with you Rampage, if the server cant survive on donations and the owners can't or wont pay for it then it will have to be shut down. Im sure most server owners run the server because they really like minecraft, its up to the owner to pay or fund the server through legal means as defined by Mojang. It is Mojang's property after all, and they get to say how people may use it.

The fact that mojang is destroying half of the community is saddening. Most of the servers will go down. It sucks most because of the fact that they're even taking down the poor servers that use the Little donation money they get to keep the server going. I hope they allow servers to take in donations.

More likely the smaller servers will survive due to smaller hosting costs.

No matter what excuses people have for charging players, its all irrelevant as its a COPYRIGHT issue. You cant make money off someone else's intellectual property if they say you cant, its as simple as that. People can jump up and down screaming and yelling all they like, its selling what belongs to someone else and you are not allowed.

sad ,so very sad now you will be forced to pay rather than have a choice :steve_rage: is this what mojang wants!!!!!!

Then I guess my server will be very popular when every other server in the world only accepts people who pay to log on, as I wont be forcing anyone to pay for access on mine. :D

Well, some need the money for a living too, not just to keep up the server. It doesn't affect Mojang if servers do this kind of things. Server making will become unpopular.

True, most cant or wont donate for various reasons. As long as you offer a good service and are consistent with everyone being treated equally, hopefully if you build up a regular player base they will contribute to the costs. If not, then you pay for it yourself or you shut it down. Moaning about how unfair it is that others wont pay for your server is pointless as no one has the right to sell in-game items if Mojang says no, as everything does belong to them.

Its not the end of the world people, the world is not flat, the sun will rise tomorrow and minecraft servers will still exist even if your favourite one disappears overnight, there are lot more servers out there to join and meet new people on.

    1. Nobody will donate for a server. I don't know how Wikipedia is maintained, but servers are much less popular. They will close.

They will if you have a supportive player base. My server is fully funded by the players (300+ active users), they can also check the web site to how much money there is to pay for the server rental when its due, and who has donated.

If you dont have enough donations then its the responsibility of the server owner to the pay the bill, if the owner cant pay because there are not enough donations that's just to bad,The server will owner will pay or close it down. There will always be servers for players to join, mine and probably thousands of others.

People need to stop whining about what they have been able to do in the past by selling (donating for perks is still selling something) intellectual property that does not belong to them. No one has right to sell the intellectual property of someone else to pay the server costs, its a copyright issue, thats' all the EULA is about.

I'll admit my vip perks dont fully comply with the EULA at the moment, however I'm in the process of changing that now. Good chance my donations will reduce, however I run the server because I want too and accept its up to no one but myself to cover the rental costs. My server will continue on no matter what.
    Quote from legopatch

Servers will find a way to survive, personlly I will be more inclined to donate to a non pay-to-win server, then a pay-to-win one. Servers aren't as expensive as people seem to think they are, and if it does cost more money then users donate: do what others have done: put up a bar showing how much the server needs to run, and how close donations have taken it to being there. The people that have invested a lot of time into the server will donate to keep it up, those who cannot afford to will not be so desperate: its a win-win.

Personally I think the majority of people who are against mojang enforcing the new EULA are those who spent a lot of money for perks, advantages, and the like, server owners who have been making big $$, or those who mistakenly believe that it will be impossible to pay for servers with it.

Anyways, anyone have a counter point? :D

    No argument from me

It is not Mojang's fault people made a server thinking that they wouldn't have to financially support it themselves.

If anything, people should try to adapt to the EULA instead of pointless banter.

    Totally agree with you Winter.

Why should server owners expect the right to make money by selling the intellectual property of others. Even if there are enough people will to pay for items to keep the server online, its still making money on someone else's property. If a server cant survive on donations or the owner is not prepared to pay the difference in the server rental, then that server should not exist no matter how much the server is liked by its players. No one has the right to sell what doesn't belong to them, its the actions of the bigger servers who have brought the attention of Mojang on to the servers operations

Yes, I run a server. Yes, I expect my donations to drop as I adjust the few advantages that donators have, to align with mojangs requests. However I chose to start a server over 2 years because I wanted to, and I am prepared to pay the rental costs if the donations stop covering the expenses.

Not a good way to run a server, asking for staff from people you don't know. Your better off to run it by yourself, and only then after SEVERAL months you could ask someone you believe you may be able to trust to help you. Even then only give permissions for a few commands, in time (many more months) you gradually increase the permissions. You really only want people with a proven track record, who have shown to be trust-worthy and reliable over a very long period of time. Establish the rules you want to run your server by, and NEVER EVER break them for anyone as your regular players will not thank you at all if they even suspect some players are being treated differently

The best rule I ever decided on is that that rule-breakers are permanently banned with no warning. If someone steals or griefs why should they be given a 2nd chance, why would you trust someone after they have been caught. Your regular trustworthy players will appreciate that, they are the ones you should be looking after and not accept just anyone to try and increase your player numbers.

Of course if you want to run a server where anything go's you may not have any rules, however if you want use any of my player rules/expectations, go for it.
