You can make a 1.8 profile with Forge, but when you run any other mods, it crashes. I just tried it again.

Trying to run 1.8 with mods still crashes. I'm hoping they fix this soon.

The .minecraft folder might be hidden. Go into File Explorer options and show hidden folders/files.

I know the CurseForge app lets you know if there are mod updates.
I don't think there is any program that will identify mod conflicts. Mod authors are under no obligation to make sure their mod works with every other mod.

The backup should have a saves folder of the world. When you re-install the pack, copy/paste the backup saves folder to the new installed profile (overwrite if need be). When you open the modpack, your backup world should be available.
