Whilst they did add the custom "Sky Islands" world generation recently, this wasn't actually islands in the sky. I'd rather describe them as islands falling into the void. Survival is increasingly hard here, as diamonds are next to impossible to find, also the villages that were unlucky enough to spawn next to the edge of a cliff had part of houses that spawned on Y=0 meaning literally just above the void, and it just didnt feel like "sky" islands to me. (Perhaps a fix would be great!)
When you look up at the sky in Minecraft, you see a couple clouds, the sun or moon, stars and some phantoms depending on what time of day it is, but that's about it. When players build upwards, it's usually starter players that usually just make some tall towers and discover the build height limit, which can sometimes crush dreams of a floating empire or temple.
But what if the sky WASN'T the limit? What if beyond the clouds, were scattered islands that could only be reachable via elytra? This could be made possible by atmospheres between them where building isn't possible, though I would imagine it would be hard to even begin to code something like that.
I guess what I'm saying is that there should be a better reason for exploration with the elytra. We have wings, so why don't we fly instead of glide?
Imagine flying 200 blocks or so vertically to find a small sky village with different items in the chests and a different type of villager to trade with? Spectral arrows could have came from these sky islands, phantoms could be the lost pets of the sky villagers who unknowingly fly to the overworld and become distraught at night, and just so many other backstories and quests that could be made from this update.
You could even go as far as to make vertical biomes, which could possibly the generation for caves too... *wink wink*
This is something that I have been longing for, and I'm sure people have had similar thoughts to me, so please, any mod creators or Minecraft developers, please make my dream a reality and make minecraft the way it is supposed to be. Make it graceful. Minecraft: The Sky Isn't the Limit.
Theres not much you can do with trees. Changing their structure would be a nice update, but shouldn't be the main focus of an update. Perhaps maybe an overworld update? I'm not sure what more you would want from the overworld

Exactly what I was thinking. I was confused why there wasn't any chiseled red nether bricks, this is a good suggestion.
