I think Jeb purposely do not want to push containers (chest/furnace/dispenser) as this will involve in complicated calculation in the inventory attached to it which will also increase the workload of the game engine.
Especially these things are to be designed in SMP environment. The flicking of redstone signals is already a framerate killer for SMP and I don't think the developer wants more things to be calculated for no meaning.
There is one thing I think the texture of the piston is somewhat incorrect - blocking water. Shouldn't it be sealed to the side so that water would not passed through/destroy the piston?
Anyway I am having lots of idea on how to play with the piston. Piston that cover the light source, piston that pump water upstream, piston that...
My 2 cents.

the mod is better (at this time period maybe not when its done) for the following reasons
1)thickness the bar that pushes the top needs to be thicker
2) doesn't launch dirt gravel and player/mobs (although it can be used for other things)
3) can probably catch on fire(this is just an assumption since the top part is all wood
4) the modded version can push chests and stuff like that
things this one has better
1) looks
2) .................
so ya
i think i will stick with the mod i want to here more about the adventure mode -

this is a dojo i made using i have made these many times on many servers ranging by 20x20 wide to 100x100 wide
this is an arena i made the first pic is the incide all the pitfalls into lava can be closed by a switch in the control room hanging above its walls have about 70 dispensers that at the click of a button all fire inwards towards the center hitting every square inside
the second pic is of the outside entrance in a cave i created using mc edit i took a large area of the nether replaced the lave with water nether rack with stone mushrooms/fire with air then moved the entire area to the overworld and put the arena in it which ended up looking really nice
the final pic is just it outside the cave just to show how big it was the only part of the arena itself that was done with mcedit was the dome roof
this was a maze i was working on before my computer diedd and i lost the save sigh
all builds were done solo
