    I played the Java version before, and it was nice to be able to set up a server at home. That way, people could log in to play at any time without needing a particular other person to start up and host.


    If I switch to the "Better Together" version, how do I set up a home server? All mentions of "servers" seem to be about realms or big community servers, and I can't find anything about setting up my own.

    I'm running a home vanilla survival mode server for just myself and my wife. We started it last year when 1.8.0 came out, built and gathered a bunch of stuff, then took a break until recently. I updated the server and our clients to the latest version, 1.8.8, and started up the same world again.


    We have some pretty big animal farms. Back in 1.8.0, it didn't cause many problems. The only thing I can recall going bad was if someone logged in right in the middle of the biggest of them it would take a while to get going, or sometimes would time out.


    In 1.8.8 though, it's awful. Even near the smaller of our farms, everything tends to grind to a crawl. The animals will freeze for a few seconds, then suddenly warp around, freeze for a few seconds, etc. Opening chests or doing anything else takes several seconds to register.


    One strange thing is that this doesn't always happen. Sometimes everything just keeps running nice and smooth.

    It can happen even when I'm the only one on the server. If both of us are on, only the person near the animals experiences any problems.


    Server is on Windows 7 64, running the official dedicated . Core 2 Duo 3GHz, 6GB ram, 10k rpm HDD. Java version was 7u67 I think, upgrading to the latest (8u60?) didn't seem to make a difference. It's allocating a min and max of 2048MB for the server. Started off with all the same command line args as before, experimented with some others but no difference. All connections are wired gigabit.


    I've watched the resource monitor on the server pc, and while the CPU utilization does go up a bit, it's not pegged at 50 or 100%. Disk and network activity look normal. The server console doesn't spit out any warnings about ticks taking too long.



    Anyone know what's going on here? Have the 1.8.x versions since 1.8.0 added some bugs or maybe "optimizations" to cause this?

    These are probably due to the server specs. It can't keep up, how much ram is allocated to the server (If there is already a decent amount adding more probably wont help)

    Server relevant specs:
    • Windows 7 64-bit
    • Core 2 Duo E6600 running at 3.0GHz
    • 6GB ram
    • 10k RPM WD "Velociraptor" 300GB HDD

    Server command line:

    java -server -Xms2048M -Xmx2048M -d64 -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+UseParNewGC -XX:+CMSIncrementalPacing -XX:ParallelGCThreads=2 -XX:+AggressiveOpts -jar minecraft_server.1.8.jar nogui -o true 

    I believe that allocates a static 2GB for the server. Is that not plenty for two people?

    I'm looking at setting up a home server for my wife and I once 1.9 comes out. I have run one in the past, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do better this time.


    Background:

    • We have no definite plans to use mods, and never have before, but it would be nice to have the option.
    • We might want to have another friend or two connect from outside, but the max player count should be 4 or less.
    • I have an old gaming PC with Core 2 Duo E6600 and 4GB of ram to host it.

    When I ran one before I just used the normal .jar straight from Mojang, but there were some issues:

    • It seemed to really hammer our network.
    • Riding horses and boats was noticeably un-smooth.
    • One person entering or exiting the Nether would cause everything else to lag, badly enough that we had to warn each other before doing it.
    • Had frequent problems with people's positions getting out of sync and needing to relog.
    • Logging in near a large animal farm could cause the whole thing to lock up.

    Now on to the questions:


    1. I've heard that big servers never use the official server .jar, and use Bukkit, CraftBukkit, or Spigot instead. I don't really know much about these. Would one of them be worth using for a small home server? Spigot claims to have performance enhancements - would that help with the issues I've had in the past?

    posted a message on How do you find your way back to your house?

    Early on I use either:

    - A trail of many torches

    - Dirt pillars with torches on top, spaced farther apart


    Once I have the materials, I start using maps when exploring. For finding my way back to/from places that are a medium distance away though I might still place some landmarks so that I don't need to always carry the map.

    With 1.9 making Saturation even more important (tied to health regen rate) I think it's about time to make it visible. It's too important to be just some hidden value that isn't even mentioned in-game.

    I'm hosting a server that just my wife and I play on over LAN

    Server args:
    java -server -Xms1024M -Xmx2048M -d64 -jar minecraft_server.1.8.jar nogui -o true

    We're having problems with nether travel, though.

    1. Every time someone enters or exits the nether, the other person feels a lag spike
    2. Often when a player exits the nether, they'll end up in a weird desync state. They might be unable to interact with objects, and the other player may see them in a different place, or they might be totally invisible. The usual fix is to just disconnect/reconnect.
    3. Sometimes after (2) happens and the player logs off, their avatar remains in the game. One time when this happened to me, I was still able to log back in, and I could see myself. Eventually the second me timed out and disconnected. But two other times, the person who disconnected is not able to log back in and their avatar never times out and can't be kicked. When I /stop the server, it puts out a flood of exception errors.
    We played in 1.6-1.7 as well, and didn't have problems this bad or this often. We would occasionally see (2), but not as often, and (3) never happened. I don't remember whether the lag spikes were there.

    Are these common problems? Are there known solutions, or maybe some extra command line args that can improve things?

    I made an automatic egg dispenser to quickly throw/hatch eggs in my chicken farm.

    Features:

    • Starts automatically when I put eggs in it
    • Stops automatically when out of eggs
    • No running clock signal when not in use
    My biggest problem with it is that it takes up more room above-ground than I would like. It would also be nice if I could give it more capacity than 9 stacks without increasing the footprint.

    Any suggestions?
