its a pretty simple Idea that will save not just lives but equipment

it will tell you when you get a block from lava per redstone you put in so if you put in 3 redstone you will know when there is lava 4 block from the one your feet are in
like I said simple Idea and this is just a thought on how it could be designed notch might want to make it more difficult to make by making it have to be diamond as it is a really useful item I just hate dying in lava (now I just need to think of a creeper alarm )
I would love a metal detector because if you are using iron picks and doing the mine a strip leave 2 mine a strip (fig.1 )method you barely break even on iron even if you're as deep as you can get. if you could do it where you leave 4 (fig 2) between with a 2x2x2 you could maybe actually get some decent amounts of iron built up. I dont care what the schematic is like for it but it should be hard to build maybe like a compass 3 iron and a iron block (fig 3) or something like that make it good and hard to make but worth every penny also it should only work for a certain amount of time after you combine it with 3red stone in your inventory crafting I dont think that would unbalance the game too much and if you made one out of gold it would detect Redstone and diamond even maybe? (not that anyone ever needs as much redstone as is lying around)
but those are just my thoughts if they are trying to keep with a more medieval sorta feel you could make some sorta crystal ball or something
